I found a shop close to me that sells retro consoles and games so I thought about buying a Dreamcast for 25$ with my leftover money from christmas.

How many good games are there and how hard is it to find them?Or is it better to buy a Saturn wich is 10$ less?

Dreamcast is still great i love playing it. Has alot of great games and they are cheap. Some game like shenmue sell for more like £25 on ebay. But most of them you can pick up for about £3-£5. But if you know a shop that sells old Dreamcast games you will probably get them cheaper.

it's really easy and cheap to acquire many great dreamcast games and it has tons of top titles. check the final page in the dreamcast is overrated topic to see a list of games that I think are really great for dreamcast. I own over 120 games for it and it's my favorite system after the saturn

Dreamcast is an older console that holds up extremely well, especially if you get the VGA adapter. For $25 you can't go wrong. Lots of interesting games on the console, lots of excellent 2d fighters--heck, $25 is worth is just for Powerstone and the shenmue games alone. My advice when buying a used one is to see if you can test out the controller your getting. The Dreamcast controller was similar to the n64 pad in the sense that it's functionality greatly depends on how well the prior owners took care/played the console, only with DC it isn't just the analog stick but also the L/R triggers. There's also Bleamcast...

The VGA cable improves quality immensely--it will allow you to even get a good picture on a plasma. It's hard to find though. The most common ones are a chinese product from Retro Bit and one from RacketboydotCom. The Retro Bit one also has the s-video option, the Racketboy one is strictly VGA. The latter can still be found easily. You found a new DC for $25?

Yeah, it's a great system. Check the list in my blog for info.

Here's some that are worth owning, great games either exclusive or superior on the DC:

  • Soul Calibur
  • Virtua Fighter 3tb
  • Project Justice
  • Bangai-O
  • Mars Matrix
  • Gunlord (awesome 2D action-platfomer, because the neo geo version is infinitely more expensive)
  • Elemental Gimmick Gear (awesome RPG with beautiful 2D graphics)
  • Daytona USA 2001
  • Test Drive Le Mans
  • Shenmue 1
  • Giga Wing I & II
  • Powerstone I & II (only other version is on PSP)
  • Bomberman Online (don't worry about the 'online' thing, you can play all the good stuff locally, it's cheap and a excellent game to play with friends)

There's a ton more.

480p with vga box yes, otherwise no. it's definitely worth it. playing dreamcast on vga makes it look almost current gen. especially graphical powerhouses like shenmue 2 and soul calibur

Very much so! Especially if you are into perfect to near perfect arcade ports, you cannot go wrong with the DC. It also had an excellent selection of exclusives as well that are well worth getting.

Most DC games are still reletively cheap, however titles like Project Justice, Cannon Spike, and Power Stone 2 will end up costing you over $45 used. Other than that, 95% of its entire library can be bought for $30 or less.

It really depends.

I recommend you doing a research on how easy or hard will it be for you to get the games you want.

Both the Saturn and Dreamcast have a lot of quality games but finding and purchasing them can be tricky and expensive.

For sure. Lots a great exclusives, some of the best versions of multiplatform games (between PS1, N64, & Dreamcast), and it's pretty cheap to collect for.

But most importantly, is the game library. And it has a great one:

  • Bangia-O (I actually haven't played this one, but it looks like a blast and it's at the top of my wishlist)
  • Crazy Taxi 1 & 2
  • Dead or Alive 2
  • Dino Crisis
  • Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm
  • Elemental Gimmick Gear
  • Giga Wing 1 & 2
  • House of the Dead 2
  • Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
  • Maken X
  • Marvel vs. Capcom 1 & 2
  • Metropolis Street Racer
  • Phantasy Star Online (Granted, it's not much use nowadays, though)
  • Resident Evil 2 & 3
  • Resident Evil: Code Veronica
  • Sega Rally Championship 2
  • Sega Smash Pack Vol. 1 (Sega classic game collection)
  • Shenmue
  • Skies of Arcadia
  • Sonic Adventure
  • Soul Calibur
  • Spider-Man (Different from PS2/XBox/Gamecube game, set in the comic book universe rather than the movie universe)
  • Street Fighter III
  • Quake III: Arena
  • Sword of Berzerk: Guts' Rage
  • Test Drive 6
  • Unreal Tournament
  • Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense
  • WWF: Attitude

the VGA makes a big improvement, , also it means that you can play it on a PC monitor (although the scalers on more modern monitors aren't always great , because they are built with DVI and HDMI in mind)

Quake Live is for noobs. The aiming is too easy and hit zone too large.

OF COURSE BUYING A DREAMCAST IS WORTH IT! What's the matter with you?

Yes, I think it's worth it. Exclusive to Dreamcast(no rereleases): ChuChu Rocket Draconus Gunlord Maken X Project Justice Shenmue Tech Romancer Test Drive Le Mans Toy Commander Wacky Races Better or cheaper on Dreamcast: Grandia II (PS2 version has noticable frame rate problems and slowdown) Skies of Arcadia (quite a bit cheaper than on Gamecube) Soul Calibur (XBLA version missing some content)

YES! Buy it now! I love the Dreamcast. I can find games for a few dollars from time to time around my house at second hand shops and stuff. jjgames.com has reasonable prices on the games. I'm a huge DC fan though, but I think $25 is a totally worth while price.
