It's simply because it's popular...I know a few people who claim to hate it but have never even tried playing it...stupid

23Jarek23

You don't need to play it to know what a cash cow it's became.

I love how when people see a few hundred people, at the most, complaining on a few forums about a game they assume that's everyone who bought the game. So if they all say they dislike it they start chirping "oh they hate it just because it's popular."

The majority os players are not on forums. They're plaing the game and throwing their money at Activision. It's only the vocal minority who frequent forums.

Because it's popular.

Seriously.

Ilovegames1992

No. it's because it's popular for the WRONG reasons.

m3 is about a 6/10 at most. Black Ops was an 7.5/10 int erms of user opinions.

The series rewards terrible players. lots of lag, instant deaths, cheats (perks), etc etc. and there is NO balance. u spawn u die after 4 seconds.. you have to be inhuman in order to miraculously go flawless. b/c this game takes superhuman reflex. not skill. (mw3)

I really enjoyed the very first CoDs, but it's become very cookie-cutter and generic with each new release. I think it's way over the top with action set-piece after set-piece.

As a game I feel it's very basic with few features, but it's the fact that it goes on to outsell games that I feel deserve the sales far more with every single installment it makes into the never changing series that gets to me.

People like to ***** a lot about this and FPSs in general. I guess it shows that they don't have anything better to do with their time. If there's anything positive I can say about COD, it's that there aren't many other online multiplayer games worth playing when so many of them don't have a lot of people playing on their servers, unless you're referring to MMOs or another genre other than (first-/third-person) shooters. Sure, maybe it's not the most fine-tuned MP-enabled game, but that is more than made up by the amount of people playing it. Also, if someone just annoys the **** out of you, simply ignore them or continue searching until you find a better match.

My problem with the game is there hasn't been a real significant change in the game in god knows how long. It literally feels like i'm paying full price for expansion after expansion. I'm also just burnt out on fps's in general.

I don't know. People even diss Mario and Zelda. Haters will always hate. And who cares, if you ask me.

I personally enjoy the series. I think the multiplayer is easy to get into, fun to play, and it's always active so you get your money's worth IF you give it the time.

I don't really hate the game, rather I hate the multiplayer community of the series. Almost everyone you run into online seems homophobic, racist, sexist, etc. I've got better things to do than listen to people badmouth each other online.

Vari3ty
I'm not one of those people, just saying :P.

it's released every year and everything can actually be a dlc

they milk the series so freaking bad it's hardcore

and then to top it off almost ever game from 09-11 has been just a fps spam it was nuts

and most of the hate comes from an obnoxious immature community and little 12 year olds dropping the F-bomb every 10 seconds

resident evil orc is getting a 10 from me cause it's a damn fan service i get zombies hunters lickers and mrx hell yes

almasdeathchild
You're giving it a 10?And I'm pretty sure you haven't played it.

The ignorance... From the top of my head, I started hating COD when Black ops churns dlc over dlc that rips apart the community. They promised mod tool that never came though not sure if today, it has or not. Still Treyach make great zombie part, that's a given. Mw2 garnered hate when there's no dedicated servers. Then came MW3 which is reskinned of mw2 - if you do not despise that or worst, ignoring it, congratulations on being sucked dry. That aside, two or three wrongs doesn't make this one a right. Just because people complain about cod and less about mario or whatever doesn't detract from the fact that the complains and hatred is justified. As of now, assassin creed is starting..or maybe has about a quarter of COD's stain.

People just don't like to be associated with the mainstream, even when the mainstream are right about something. Truth me told, CoD is the slickest online experience on consoles. It might not be the most original anymore, and it might be milked like crazy, but it is a very, very solid game.

Everything since CoD4's wild success has been a milked clone of the game before it. CoD1 and 2 were war games, now the CoD series might as well be transformers. Michael Bay would be proud. Why should I buy the new CoD games when I can still boot up CoD4 and get the same experience? I don't give developers money when they clearly put minimal effort in their yearly products.

I've stated my reasons for disliking the CoD series, I'm not repeating myself. How is milking something dry a good thing? Do you like un-originality? Do you like less choice? iPods weren't the first portable music players available you know, like Apple would have you believe. If Activision keep releasing the same game every year and making tonnes of money, other companies are going to start doing the same. You're saying that's a good thing!?

I really don't understand people who hate a game/movie/song just because it's highly successful and they don't want it to be. It's fine to not like something that other people like, but constantly preaching about how you feel it shouldn't be popular when it already is is just silly in my opinion. People like what they like.

TJORLY

Theres nothing wrong with something being popular. There is something wrong with other people copying that idea though, in hopes of emulating its popularity.

Look at Bioshock 2, Deadspace 2 and Mass Effect 3. Would they have gotten crappy, tacked on multiplayer modes if COD wasn't so popular?

Yes. COD didn't popularise multiplayer. Online MP was huge before COD4 got big.

Anyway, Cash cows are considered good things, theres a huge difference between saying that something is being milked dry and saying that something is a cash cow...The NFL is a cash cow, Walmart, cash cow, Nintendo DS, cash cow, Michael Jackson, cash cow, so many other things...are all of these things being milked dry? is that what your trying to say?

Yeah, but in just 4 months we've had Super Mario 3D Land, Fortune Street (had Mario in it), Mario Kart 7, Mario Party 9, and Mario and Sonic at the London Olympics and nobody said anything, but when Call of Duty comes out once a year, everyone seems to freak out.

Because it's the current throne-holder of a dumbed down consolification of a genre that used to be good, having taken over that role from Halo.

I don't know. I only hear this sort of trash talk on the internet. I think they must hate it because they come up with a new COD game every year. As a matter of fact they're already producing another one to be released this year. I think it's a very fun game. I have two COD games, world at war and MW3. They are quite fun. I understand that some people think it's nothing new, yeah it's not but the majority of people really like the game. It's a great way to pass the time, it appeals to both casual and hardcore gamers.

I don't despise the CoD games although I don't play them much either. It's the game which the me-too companies have latched on to and tried to replicate instead of concentrating on their own more unique creations. We've seen it before, first with the Doom clones, and then the glut of fighting games, both during the 90's.

@TheManofTin: I played COD (MW2) myself at one time for a year and even played competitively but I never really enjoyed it that much. In my case, I started playing games like Tribes and Counterstrike when I was just a kid so I have pretty high expectations for games. I feel that the COD franchise is the main reason why most of today's FPS games are so dumbed down and easy to play. COD is designed to make it easier for casual players with very limited skill to be able to easily compete with anyone, including competitive players. You no longer have to spend a pretty big chunk of time practicing on a game to be able to do well. And that does not sit well with me.

Like I said, I started out on the Tribes series, which are games that require a pretty good amount of skill if you want to be successful. Tribes didn't hold your hand.

Another problem is they just continue to churn out a new game every year and it is pretty much the same as the last one. There isn't any innovation. Nothing new, just the same old stuff over and over. And then they want to charge you $60 for this same old stuff, plus another $15-$20 a couple of times for DLC. So you end up paying about $100 for a game that really isn't much different than the one you bought last year. No thanks. I'd rather play FPS games that offer something different like Planetside 2.

Reasons vary. longtime FPS fans (usually PC) complain the series pushed a little too hard on 'consolifying' the shooter to cater specifically for Xbox Live crowd, instead of being just as accessible and fit for every platform.

I agree with you on the majority of what you said @brucecambell. This series has done a horrendous job at influencing other genres and video games. I used to love Call of Duty. I remember the first time I played it. But, that was when COD was known for its FPS World War II shooter and not what it has transpired into today. There really isn't any skill to play this type of game. Remember, even the developers a few years ago said that they want a simple game. They want a simple game that anyone who considers themselves a casual player or a hard core gamer could easily pick up a controller and play equally without fear of losing new clientele. I think a lot of people buy the game because its something they know. They know exactly what this game is going to offer them and they don't want to "browse" other type of games and genres on the fear it won't be as EXCITING as Call of Duty has offered them to this point.

@brucecambell said:

There is so many reasons. Lets start with the most obvious.

The game just isnt that good. In fact it was never that great. It was a good game back in the day but in todays world the game is dated. Its influence over the industry is very bad. The fact that other superior games, creative games ,get overlooked but COD sells 20 million on a yearly basis is pathetic. Its says to game designers they dont need to be creative, just make a medicore shooter

Call of Duty simply has nothing to offer the game industy yet is the most successful franchise in existence today.

It also happens to be the have the most broken multiplayer experience to ever exist in MP gaming. Really i can't name one reason to like it. I think the topic should be changed to why do so many people "like" Call of Duty. What is so special about it? Its just another game to me. I'll never understand the love for that terd of a game.

Simple. The game is released on a yearly basis, with no gameplay changes since 4, and is so over popular that most people refuse to acknowledge ANY online game unless its COD. Aslo knowing that the guy camping in the corner that has killed you 30 times is most likely someone between the age of 10 and 13 is quite unsettling.

Can't really comment as I've only ever played 5 minutes of one. I'm just not interested in the franchise. My friends enjoy them, so they can't be all bad, but it's just one of those games, much like Halo, that I never really found the joy in.

No real reason.

It's literally the only shooter that offers many game modes on and offline. Campaign, splitscreen bots, splitscreen zombie/ spec ops/ extinction plus all the online modes.
