I feel like the Sonic games have much more variety of music then Mario. Most Mario games tend to repeat the same pieces from other games. While Sonic games always had new tunes. Many of the tunes were excellent as well.

I've only played the first Sonic game on the Genesis (something I plan on remedying soon), but the music for that game was one of my favorite parts about it. Awesome soundtrack for sure. The gameplay didn't impress me all too much, but I really dig the soundtrack. I greatly prefer the Mario games in terms of gameplay, and the music is undoubtedly iconic, but I'll go with Sonic on this one.

It's a dialect called "BS", don't worry, you can just ignore it. Anyway, I'd say Sonic, the tracks are just more groovy and catchy imo, and more memorable.

Mario... I think 98% of the people will immediately recognize the main tune by its first notes even if they never have played the game. That's a pretty big achievement.

Sonic. Music was always Sega's strong point. Altho Nintendo games had some very nice tunes as well.

Music Goes to Sonic. The sound designers are usually fairly consistent in introducing near tracks.

Mario has a fairly robust sound team as well(I Lurvs you fluffy buff galaxy), but does not get the win in the music design because all they seem to be focused on doing at times is finding a new way to remix the overworld/underworld themes instead of shooting for new tracks, which gets repetitive real fast(Again, there ARE exceptions).

I saw your list, but didn't get through all of them. Why was it hidden behind a spoiler though?

Bet yeah, Sonic is most certainly a league above Mario. While Mario has a few iconic tunes, it gets repetitive recycling those same tunes over and over again. On the other hand, Sonic creates a new soundtrack for every game, rarely ever recycling tunes (besides Sonic Generations). The only Mario soundtrack that comes close is probably Mario Galaxy, in my opinion.

Isn't that the truth? Mario music is good, but I agree that they do tend to recyle so much of it. That, and I don't find any of Mario's music worth listening to on its own. For example, I loved Galaxy 2's sountrack like for the Perfect Run, but I never get the urge to listen to it just for fun. Sonic's music, on the otherhand, ranges from pop to rock, and I find that type of music way more enjoyable and easy to get into.

I'm not that high on Sonic 4's music because of the weird instruments they used, but some tracks like Mad Gear Act 1 and Death Egg MK II, I do like.

Both had great music in the beggining, but Sonic's isn't as good as it used to be. Meanwhile, Mario keeps getting better and better in the sound department. The ochestrated tunes of Mario Galaxy are incredible.

Not to say Sonic's new music is bad, per se. But not quite as good as Modern Mario's.

Sonic. One thing no one can deny is that Sonic soundtracks are great. Even Sonic 06 which was a complete fiasco had an outstanding soundtrack and main theme.

Sonic has better music by far. especially when you set up for stereo sound (headphone jack on the genesis model1 for me) Mario music is easily ignored. It sounds good at first, but you quickly forget the music.

Sonic probably has the better music, but I haven't played a lot of Sonic games, as I prefer the Mario franchise. So I haven't heard a lot of the Sonic music.

It's also worth pointing out the fact that Sonic's music influenced some of the biggest pop stars of its time, which is a testament to Sonic's quality of music. The king of pop himself, Michael Jackson, liked the music of the first two Sonic games enough to come on board as composer for Sonic 3, until he eventually dropped out of the project and went uncredited. Nevertheless, the End Credits for Sonic 3 formed the basis for his hit song Stranger in Moscow. In addition, Yuzo Koshiro's Bridge Zone theme from the 8-bit version of Sonic later formed the basis for his sister Janet Jackson's biggest hit single, Together Again.

By the way, before you noticed, I edited my post before and added the following unreleased Sonic track, which you may have missed:

But seriously, try at least give it a listen. It's not the cheesy vocal version you must be thinking of (which almost ruined a good track), but the instrumental version from the recent mobile port of Sonic CD. By the way, here's an alternative title screen version.

However, the original version from the 8-bit version of Sonic 2, Green Hills, is better... and the unofficial 16-bit remix is even better than that.

I can't decide. I lean more towards the Sonic series but I always thought the Adventure games OST were meh at best.

That´s one of the areas where the Sonic games have always been better than the Mario ones,even some of the worst Sonic games ahev pretty good music in comparison. So yeah,easily Sonic.

Sonic even for me Mario has excellent music in it's classic games and spin offs. The Mario Galaxy games have extremely nice orchestrated tracks. The NSMB games have the weirdest and worst music and it gets reused constantly in levels. Sonic has a wide variety of great tracks except for that crap with vocals(rolling around at the speed of sound.)

Mario.

I loved sonic and all but I cant recall one single sonic track in my head, while I can recall several levels in mario in full in my head. The mario music was just catchier and stuck with me more.

The fact I constantly see some new video of someone beatboxing mario, playing it on a harp, a piano, a guitar, a flute, a saxophone, a theramin, and practically everything that creates a sound at all on youtube kind of is a testament to the super mario music. Sonic has his fair share, but nothing compared to all the fan versions of marios music.
