I think Final Fantasy XII is probably the best I've heard. It doesn't hurt that they did facial animations so well in that game too. Sometimes you we're able to really read their expression to know how the characters felt.

I think Grim Fandango had the best voice acting I've heard. Half Life 2 also was solid for the most part. Most games I just wish the voice acting would go away, so it is noticable when a game has even decent acting. Dragon Quest 8 was pretty good as well.

Indigo Prophecy/ Fahrenheit really stands out for me in terms of voice acting. Mind you, for that sort of game it pretty much demands good voice acting... But year, probably the best ive come across recently.

For the most part, you can usually count on Tim Schafer productions (Psychonauts, for example), and the MGS series to deliver some of the finest voice acting.

But overall, I have to go with Final Fantasy XII. I wouldn't have expected it, but it has the best voice acting I've ever heard in a video game. Just about every single character - and there were plenty of them - were superb.

Was I the only one who was bothered by the fact that Balthier's (sp) VO sounded like he was inflecting on the wrong parts of the sentences. It's like you could tell what type of character the developer had in mind, but it doesn't quite come out right.

Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2:Ep 1 both have great voiceactors, the lipsynching and expressions also really fit into them to.

Grand Theft Auto games (especially Vice City and San Andreas) had great voice acting, so did Saints Row.

Call of Duty 3, Max Payne, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes and Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty are my favourites.
