Mine is definitely persona 3 I went through a super long time being sick in bed and this game just made hours turn into minutes... the story is so great and battles were super challenging. There wasn't any character who was just generic and boring.

So what are your guys' favorites?

It's easily my favorite game of all time, Disgaea. The Disgaea series in general has by far the most interesting SRPG battle system, offers almost endless progress (Level 9999 is just the beginning), tons of post game content (many say the story is just a tutorial), fantastic characters and a great light-hearted story. I also love the graphics style and music is fantastic.

Hmmm... I feel the need to break this up into categories:

  • JRPG - Final Fantasy VII
    • Too many to chose from here... Short answer is it was my first RPG. I have about 9 other that would contend for #1.
  • WRPG - TES: Oblivion
    • A tough choice, but I think it beats out the other TES games. Morrowind would be here if it had better combat. Skyrim was great but a bit simplified and bland. Fallout 3 is close. Witcher 3 was great too, but became a bit of a chore.
  • ARPG - Dark Souls
    • Favorite Souls game. Best Action game. Fashion Souls. Build variety. World design. Cryptic AF.
  • CRPG - Divinity: Original Sin
    • Many great ones here. Dragon Age: Origins and Planescape: Torment are very close. Divinity has an amazing combat system.
  • SRPG - Disgaea
    • They nailed the formula here. Great replay value. Unlimited grinding. You can toss enemies onto each other to add their levels.

I agree with a lot listed here as some of my favorites. But would add Monster Hunter, Pokémon, and Dragons Dogma.

Panzer Dragoon Saga is my favorite rpg, mainly because of how it does away with many of the annoying aspects of the genre, such as required grinding and having an abundance of filler moments and cliche plot elements. The gameplay itself is fast and aggressive due to the franchise's arcade inspired roots, and yet at the same time, is very tactical due to how crucial a role positioning is. Then there's the soundtrack which is just insanely good, and I could gush on about it forever...

Other rpgs that I also love are Chrono Trigger, Skies of Arcadia, Valkyria Chronicles, The Witcher III, and KOTOR.

So hard to pick one over the others. RPGs that could easily be my favourite are:

- Chrono Trigger

- Chrono Cross

- Final Fantasy X

- Mass Effect trilogy

STALKER: Call of Pripyat

The best RPG with guns that I've played. All it needs is better graphics and more efficient code.

That's an incredibly difficult question for me to answer since I like JRPGs and WRPGs for different reasons.

For JRPGs, Final Fantasy Vi would probably be my favorite, although that's subject to change. It's an incredible game in every single way, but there are a lot of others that are really strong contenders, like Xenoblade Chronicles, Pokemon Heartgold, Dragon Quest IX, Knights in the Nightmare, Etrian Odyssey IV, Radiant Historia, and LISA: The Painful.

For WRPGs, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines would probably take the cake. It has a super engrossing world and storyline. Combat is iffy, but character customization is a lot of fun and there's plenty of replayability thanks to choices and different character classes. Others would include KOTOR 1 and 2 and Fallout 3.

  • Ultima 7
  • Jagged Alliance 1 & 2
  • Skyrim/Oblivion/Morrowind & Fallout 3 & 4

I like these because they are sandbox type games and let you play them open and non linear. Getting to the end of the game not the only fun to have in these games, the most fun i have in them is going my own way and really making my own path to the end unlike some games where you have to go only one way. I think Jagged Alliance fits the rpg category even though its turn based combat since you gain stats and there is npc interaction and choices to make.

My old school pick would be Phantasy Star 2.

For the modern era I would say Fallout 4.

Favorite of all time is final fantasy vii, I admit it's likely because it's the first RPG I played and I played it young. However I've replayed the game more times than I remember.

Favorite modern rpg, is dark souls 2, again this was my first souls experience which I found brutally hard bit satisfying.

Playing other souls games after it was enjoyable but the experience was the not same, and I found them easier to get through.

Also I prefer the lore and locations of dark souls 2 over the rest of the series

Favorite RPG for me requires no thinking at all: Earthbound.

The game is full of charm and can be quite challenging at times, not to mention the humor and style that I've never found in any other game. The combat might be basic and there are no combat animations, but that's one of my favorite things about Earthbound. It utilizes its strengths and knows its weaknesses, and the number of items available for use is just baffling.

However many have listed games I equally enjoy, or even prefer. I just like to shout-out the unmentioned :)

Ohh man, that is a hard question.

I think it is Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines

Most RPG's are not built consistently across the board, and VTM:B is no exception to this. But few games have given me a world that worked so well on its internal logic, where your class ment FAR more then simple attack patterns and range. The world felt alive, and the characters were often really awesome.

Alternatively I would say Fallout 1.. few games allow you to do as many strange things and have them work.

So either of those. a lot of choice and consequence :)

By far the best RPG I ever played is:

- Ultima 7 Black Gate

Other excellent RPGs would be: Dungeon Master, The Bards Tale 1, Ultima Underworld, Dark Queen of Krynn, Eye of the Beholder 2... of course there are some good modern RPGs too like Gothic 2, Skyrim, Mass Effect 1 etc.

Knights Of The Old Republic: II.

Excellent villain, examines the Star Wars mythos in a way other games didn't.

My absolute favorite RPG is Xenoblade Chronicles, it's one of the few games I'd rate a 10/10. It had excellent characters, addictive gameplay, fantastic music, and more. It was the complete package.

My number two RPG would have to be Pokemon Gold & Silver, just barely edging out Chrono Trigger.

FF9 is a good. I enjoy the game play with them

I like baldur's gate 2. I find it show how outside of combat skills can be used.

I like the Mass Effect 1. I find it still the best balance of shooter and RPG.

Pillars of Eternity. It was the first D&D based CRPG that I grew to love. I played it inside and out. It opened a whole new genre to me and it caused me to check out many other games from the past that fell under that genre. I still play it all the time. The fantasy lore is so rich and the combat is so fun.

Roll-playing games have a long and adventures history. From its humble tabletop origins, the RPG has grown and evolved over the years into the most dominant and ambitious DnD game genre, boasting a catalog as critically acclaimed as it is diverse. The best RPGs embrace a great storytelling tradition as well as deep and engaging game play to create imaginary universes that are as exciting to explore as they are thrilling to quest and do battle in. Front mission 3 is my favourite RPG game. In this game basically two games on the same disc.

@zawaz123: Good list. FFVIII & FFX are my favorite Final Fantasy games. My list would be:

- Persona 4 Golden

- The Witcher 3

- Horizon Zero Dawn

- Chrono Trigger

- The Legend of Dragoon

- FFVIII

- FFX

- Tales of Xillia

- Skyrim
