Mine goes like this:

NES/Master system era: NES

SNES/Genesis/Turbografx era: SNES

Saturn/PS1/N64 era: PS1

PS2/Gamecube/Xbox: Gamecube

Nintendo had my favorite consoles most of the time, but all the great rpgs won me over for the ps1.

360/PS3. Hard to choose

PS2, though I liked GC as much as any console not names PS2 or N64

N64

SNES, I don't have a genesis though.

Systems:

  • Colecovision
  • Nintendo NES
  • Super Nintendo
  • Sony Playstation
  • XBox
  • XBox 360

Handhelds:

  • Game Boy
  • Gameboy Color
  • Gameboy Advance-SP
  • Nintendo DS

That's not to say I only like those system from those eras, those. Those were just the top ones from each era, IMO. I still like Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS2, and others just fine.

basically this, just replace the 360 with the PS3, and youve got my list (though I have to admit, I didn't play Pong as an original early 70s console.

Sooooo many people are putting Atari 2600 on their lists. Why? Is it because of lack of knowledge of other systems or what?

Atari 2600 may have been innovative and pushed the video game market where it needed to go and away from Pong clones. But it wasn't a very good system. The games were a far cry from their arcade couterparts. The graphics were barely recognizable. And the sound, oh the sounds of Atari, so bad, like nails on a chalkboard. Plus you have the ultra-stiff joystick (which is easily fixed with a Sega Genesis controller that's amazingly compatible with Atari 2600).

Pretty much any other system from that era was better. Intellivision, Commodore 64, Colecovision, etc. All those systems had MUCH better graphics and sound and even had some exclusives that Atari 2600 didn't have.

Of course there's still some good games on Atari 2600. And I own one myself. But for me it's more about the memories of being a child and playing it and to have a system from that era in my collection. I'm just saying pretty much any other system from then is better.

you' re right but i had not luck to play any other systems belong second generation games, atari 2600 was officially my first console i owned and i do today and was sudden love for it, i can remember play over night to combat with my father, my favorite game was yar's revenge i consider still in my top ten shoot'em up games behind masterpiece games as ikaruga and wings of wor but in front of gradius dodonpachi, it was a game really simple but immediate to play and involving, at times i believed to be that damn fly battling with that damned invincible spider in its hole, nice times

no different than asking "why do people put the NES/SNES/PS1/PS2 on their lists?" it was the most popular, and not everybody had the privilage to own multiple systems of the same gen , so they put the only system they know , which usually ends up being the most popular.

1. C64. I played it quite a lot until the late 90s, and I still get it out every now and then. 2. SMS. First game I played on it was Arcade Smash Hits, it has 3 games on it, and one of the games on it was Breakout... I spent soo much time playing it. 3. SNES. This was the gen I started getting really into games. 4. N64 and PS1. Can't really pick 1 here as there where a lot of games I like on both. 5. PS2. Probably my least favorite gen.

well being born in 1990 that really puts the first couple gens out. my gaming really started with the SNES, but i was able to play the NES also.

ill list my consoles then do my favorites from each gen.

i have: NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Ps2, Xbox, Xbox 360, Ps3, Wii.

so my first couple of gens are just biased but the later gens are more fair.

Fave systems:

3rd gen: NES
4th gen: SNES
5th gen: N64
6th gen: Xbox
7th gen: Xbox 360

Everything before this generation. A little something that I have to get off...

Don't get me wrong they are fine n' dandy systems... It's just that they (the systems) are so horribly engineered in regards with cooling capabilities. All three company's know this catastrophe exists, yet they barley moved a finger. Instead of smooth running gaming systems, we get the worlds best $300 paper weight. Expect your crap to not last for more than 5 years max. Come three years, and you have to re-apply new thermal compound hoping that you get atleast a month out of it before the damn thing decides to cook itself dead again.

For this generation, I give it... the middle-finger trophy/achievement award! Whatever, I'm going back to my PS2...

In order of favorite to 'lesser' favorite Intellivision - Atari 2600 NES - TG-16 SNES - Genesis PlayStation - N64 All 4 were great though time-wise I probably played the Xbox most, followed by PS2. Xbox 360 (played the most) - Wii - PS3 - all 3 have fun exclusives - I tend to play most multiplats on PC or 360.

Is the Atari in with G1? Or is it it's own gen? I'll go by it being it's own.

G1: Atari 2600

G2: NES

G3: SNES

G4: N64

G5: GameCube

G6: XBOX 360 or Wii.

If Atari is in the same gen as NES, then Atari wins out on that one. The only things I REALLY like on the NES are the Mario Bros. games.

Atari 2600 (or Atari VCS) is 2nd Generation. The first generation was the Pong home systems starting with Magnavox Odyssey in 1972 (not starting with Atari's Pong which many people mistakenly believe).

Atari 2600 is also not alone in the 2nd Generation, other systems include:

  • Atari 5200 (well, this one is strange. I'm not sure if it counts as 2nd generation or 3rd generation, because Atari 2600 is 2nd genration for sure, and Atari 7800 is 3rd Generation for sure, but Atari 5200 is smack-dab in-between them.)
  • Fairchild Channel F (which actually pre-dates Atari 2600 by 1 year, being released in 1976, Atari 2600 in 1977)
  • Colecovision
  • Commodore 64 (Techinically an early PC, but this PC was a whole lot more video game oriented than other PCs at the time)
  • Intellivision
  • Magnavox Odyssey 2

the 5200 was based on Atari's early 8bit computers (Atari 800 if Im not mistaken) hence its difficult to put into a catagory. same goes for the Colecovision actually, which has very similar hardware to the Sega SG1000 (ie Sega's first system) and wouldnt you put the C64 in the 3rd gen , I admit I haven't played much C64, but judging from what I did see, its quite similar to the NES (or certainly above the other systems you mentioned) please correct me if Im wrong though.

Commodore 64 did have the best graphics of the 2nd generation. But I don't think I'd put it in 3rd generation. Late in the Commodore 64's life there were some impressive games coming out for it, for sure. So I guess it is all a matter of perspective.

But I owned a C64, which unfortunatly died last year. A lot of the game I owned on it were games from the Atari/Intellivision/Colecovision era. And the load times were absolutely excruciating. Nothing compares, not even Neo Geo CD. 5 minutes just to boot-up some disks, no exaggeration. Plus by the mid-80s we had Macs and very early Windows systems. So even though the Commodore 64 was alive in the mid-to-late 80s, it was pretty obselete considering it was still using the larger floppies, cassette data, and ran on BASIC. It was like the economy computer by then.

Ill say one thing about the C64, the soundchip is insanely good. the C64 was obselete by the late 80s, but there was the Amiga, which sadly was unpopular in the US, very popular in Europe though. in fact, the Amiga usually outdid the PC at the time, and it took quite a while for the PC to catch up (by then there were newer Amigas, but less people bought them , and thus most games were still made for the base Amiga 500) still the best "gaming" PC at the time would have to be the Japan only X68000, the specs were just crazy.

NES pretty much by default. I've never even seen Sega's first system Genesis- Never owned a SNES, probably never beaten a game on it. PS1- Only got to borrow a 64 with Smash for a few months. Never played OOT. SSB is the only game I've beaten on the console PS2- Best 3D console ever
