I mean, in terms of upcoming games it's Animal Crossing: New Horizons for me.

But probably the last game I was somewhat excited to play was Kingdom Hearts 3. It's a fine game but it definitely didn't live up to my expectations...especially given how long a lot of people waited too.

Full fledged game (not including expansion)-

Devil May Cry 5

Already made a thread about it awhile ago Thought's on Devil May Cry 5?

It's a very good game, however certainly had its fair share of problems. Did it live up to my expectations? Frankly no, but is better than the last two, so suppose that was enough I guess.

Easily my favorite new game this year.

And to think a few on this forum thought it would suck, while backing Anthem as GOTY.

@RSM-HQ:

The funny part is that Anthem turned out to be total garbage and hated all across the boards. While RE2 went well on its way to become a GOTY contender everywhere else.

@nepu7supastar7: Yeah, called Anthem a long time ago. Too much evidence was against EA and Bioware to pull it off. They lack the particular talent for that kind of project, and hadn't had the greatest track-record.

Didn't think Resident Evil 2 Remake would be as amazing as it became. Though I also hadn't shut up about it since 2015, haha.

Most recent for me was Terminator Resistance. I initially kinda ignored it until I started seeing a ton of positive user reviews and lots of "professional" negative reviews. Pretty much if you see this, you know something fishy is going on so I got excited to play it because if a normal gamer likes it you can go by this more often over a paid hack.

It turned out to be a bit better than I expected. Not many games I can say this, but I'll be replaying it at some point in the future. It feels like you are right inside the movie at times in it. Most of the time it feels like that opening scene in the first movie where you are running around in the future fighting terminators with plasma guns, it didn't get boring for me either.

Most funny part I read from the paid reviewers is it feels like a game from the past... how is that bad exactly? A game from the past is one without microtransactions and a direct narrative to follow without too much open world time wasting mechanics. I'd take this game from the "past" over most of these newer games with live service and lootbox junk that ruins the game. SJW's hate this game probably because your a guys guy in the game and get laid twice within minutes and kill terminators while doing it. For some reason this triggers people in 2019.

Wonderboy III The Monsters Trap (ps4 remaster). I LOVED the game on the Sega master system, one of my favorite childhood games and couldn't wait for this remaster, and they nailed it. The art and animation is brilliant and the game is spot on minus a few minor changes to levels. Also love how you can switch between the new art, music and sound effects to the original art/music/sound effects with a push of a button on the fly. So yes, it live up to my expectations and then some.

@speeny: Just looked it up and yes, it was released on the switch. I had a brain fart though, The Dragons Trap, not monsters trap. Doh!

Also a more recent game, CoD:MW. I love the older CoD games, anything past MW3 or Blops 2 sucks IMO, so hearing that they were going to remake the one that got me into the series in the first place got me to actually buy a new CoD, something I haven't done in years. I was even playing MW remastered just to get ready leading up to the new games release. And wow, what a cluster f*%k of a game the new one is. Its just horrible on every level. Piss poor map design, SBMM, bad netcode, tons of lag, the worst maps ever in a CoD...I'm highly disappointed in this game. Stopped playing it already and went back to MW remastered.

I'd say GOW. I loved it. It was very well written (besides Atreus weird character development bit). Played it 100% twice.

Shenmue III. My hype was pretty much dead due to the kickstarter, but my enthusiasm kicked up immensely when I inserted the disc. It's freakin' Shenmue III, after all. Overall, I enjoyed it a lot, albeit while having criticisms on design choices that aren't solely due to budgetary reasons.

The last game I was really excited to play was Astral Chain... from the moment I saw the first reveal trailer, I was sold. I love Platinum, and it just looked as cool as f*ck.

And it definitely lived up to my expectations. Goty!

Good choice, successfully re-booted the franchise as well, even though for legal reasons they had to change the IP name.

Death Stranding

But I'm out of the country at the moment and I'm really looking forward to finish it once I return.
Completely blew my mind, did not expect that.
Especially the philosophical implications Kojima is trying to make and of course Guillermo ;)

Jedi Fallen Order. The moment I saw Cal climbing the AT-AT, I was sold. I got a little disappointed when I heard that there were some Souls-like elements in the game, because I didn't think it was a good fit, and still don't, but ultimately came away from the game pleased.

Fallen Order probably, and yes, it lived up to the hype. Actually it exceeded it.

Going into I was thinking "high hopes because of Respawn, low expectations because of EA" and I was pleasantly surprised to play such an awesome Star Wars game. It really looks like EA let Respawn do their thing with the game.

Arguably the best Star Wars game since Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2..

At first Good DLC's for beautiful & well made 4K adventure known as 'Stellaris' comes to mind <3 Have adventured 100+ & less than 150 hrs so far on it & loved every moment. Happy to support it's fine devs & following their Twitch streams & Twitter feed always when time is rdy for them :)

Excited to dive into Frozen content DLC on Amazing 'Subnautica' :) I've been part of it since it's 1st month on Beta days. Subnautica is stunning survival adventure from Indie crew. It has mind massaging ambience & atmosphere. Recommended to adventure there with proper lighting =)

And not a single person said Anthem, how quaint.

Anyway though not a full fledged game (expansion) shout-out to Monster Hunter World: Iceborne

It's tough recommending to none followers of the series. Because for starters it's designed to bring back essentials, older fans enjoy (hot drinks/ classic monsters/ elements/ challenge) but I do think if you can find a group to share the experience with jump-in!

Does require players to beat base-MHW to access the content. Which itself is longer than most games. Probably longer than anyone puts into a playthrough of The Witcher 3. And that's also assuming you skip all the events, siege looting, Arch Tempered monsters, and other great base-MHW content. Then add coop and you're looking at roughly two hundred hours on gaming. For me it was about eight hundred. Though worth noting, all those hours I had a great time playing a great game.

And Iceborne only took that further.

Very happy with it. I know this thread isn't about expansions but I just enjoy this that much.

It would easily beat even Resident Evil 2 Remake for me personally, as my favorite gaming experience of 2019. Though admittedly I don't play everything (those who claim they have are likely full of-it as 2019 has shown us) and am a proud and vocal MH fanboi (ノ ̄ー ̄)ノ

I do have Luigi Mansion 3 to look forward for the holidays. Doubt it will exceed my expectations. And with that I wish everyone on GD a jolly and festive time. Till next year folks.

Happy gaming.

Pokemon Shield/Sword. I wouldn't say that it really met my expectations, but it's still been a lot of fun and worth playing. At a certain point I'll probably complete the story, catch the legendaries, get every pokemon I can and evolve it, and then lose interest for a while. Admittedly, things have been going kinda slow since the 6th gym for me.

I get excited about games all the time, I was super excited to play fallen order and so far it has definitely met my expectations.

Right before that, I was hyped for shovel knight: king of cards and it completely blew my expectations out of the water, a fantastic end to a fantastic series

God Of War (PS4)

Been a fan of the series since GOW2 and had really high expectations for this one. Luckily the game met those expectations and has gone on to be my favourite game this gen.

I rarely get excited for games anymore. I've looked forward to some stuff, but not really excited. A bit sad, but most games being made today just looks really derivative, uninteresting or made with pure greed in mind. Sony has their movie games, MS has their cars, Halo and Gears, and Nintendo keeps holding their awesome IPs hostage by doing absolutely nothing with them. PC might get one or two multiplats worth it to play once in a while among all indie games.

Last time was Sekiro, and it totally lived up to my expectations. Before that it was Monster Hunter World for PC in 2018. And it kinda lived up to my expectations? It was dissapointingly short (not having any G-rank like other MHs I played before World), but the mechanics and gameplay lived up to my expectations. Was excited for the Iceborne DLC to MHW, and that's been a blast so far.

Star Citizen has a stable build (for me, at least) and I haven't been this excited in a long time.

I sat down to play a few minutes of it around 10:30 and next thing I know it's 1:30.

In five years when the game finally comes out, it is going to consume my life :P

First games in every MH generation never have G-Rank dating back to the original on PS2. As such don't fully follow your line of disappointment.

World was also the first MH game to not use a modified MH2Portable engine which was released in 2008. So everything was rebuilt from the ground-up.

but most games being made today just looks really derivative, uninteresting or made with pure greed in mind

You're probably looking into the wrong places. Sure many games are absolute cash-grabs for easily manipulated customers to eat marketing-pie; but plenty of great/ if not brilliant games also see release on a common basis.

May want to break from your media following bubble and look into other areas to get the most out of your hobby. Instead of outlets that blissfully pander towards the likes of Electronic Arts as a golden standard.

-

*on that note (again) find a lot of people on this forum not being honest with themselves, I saw many of you being exceedingly hyped for Anthem, even defending it at release.

Regarding MH, I had never experienced a non-Ultimate version of a Monster Hunter game before, so I wasn't prepared for how short MHW would feel in comparison to MH3U, MH4U and MHGU. Hence, a bit dissapointed. But I was only dissapointed that I had no more MH to play, so that's a good thing really.. And my dissapointment was totally on me for not researching before experiencing.

On the second point, I'm pretty sure I'm not just looking into the wrong places. AAA gaming, which is what I look at the most when I say games feel derivative, was way more imaginative in the past. Now it feels like every AAA game has a certain template to follow, and all developers are scared shitless of not following it.

This isn't just with games. Same with movies. And music. Feels like you're watching and listening to the same crap all the time. A new Mad Max game? Make it like Far Cry. A new Tomb Raider? Make it like Uncharted. A new RAGE game? Make it like Far Cry. A new open world game? Make it into a map checklist-game like... every other open world AAA game right now, where you have three different tasks to do 5000 times throughout the game. Oh, battle royale is popular? Here's 25 new and samey battle royale games. And we added a BR mode to all other MP games. Ugh. Even Ubisoft themselves said they now have to make certain all of their IPs don't feel the same..

And regarding Anthem, yes lol! Quite a few here hyped it and defended it after release.

Ha, I suppose true. Had both X and XX (Gen for some) and for me those games are poorly made. Suppose it wasn't the main team behind them, and even had some Rocket Man/ Mega Man designers working on the 'new' content while the main team was busy with World.

. . All those games you mentioned I wouldn't even give a second glance. While I've played Tomb Raider reboot and Uncharted, couldn't bring myself to put many hours into either. They're generic third person set-pieces with no real depth, hand holding the player constantly. Suppose taste is subjective but if I may be frank, they're shallow experiences for graphic-whoring 'just like D00M 3'

Was far too busy enjoying a good cover shooter called Vanquish, while mainline media gushed over Tombs and Drakes visual flair/ scripted events. If I recall someone on Gamespot made an article 'Thanks to Uncharted we can now see boss battles as an outdated concept'; or something to that extent. And many agreed with him. . Pretty disgusting if you ask me, lol.

Rage 2, Mad Max and Far Cry always looked very generic to me also, then again I commonly dislike openworld games, that do nothing but focus on scale and immersion. They're typically poorly designed and done to hide a developers shortcomings.

As such wouldn't play them even if handed to me for free. Time matters, and I enjoy gaming too much to waste on tripe.

Furthermore never followed 'AAA' hype just for the sake of it. I play games I want to play regardless of development budget. Finally got Vanillawares latest game; I'm already very positive about the game. Mechanically deep and very well crafted, nothing less I expect from one of my favorite developers.

Also a huge survival horror nerd so seeing that genre being revived is a pleasure to me personally. The Evil Within and new Resident Evils have been excellent editions to my library.

Yeah, Generations was by far my least played Monster Hunter. I really didn't like it, and couldn't really put my finger on why either. I remember thinking "why don't I just play MH4 instead of this?" when I played it. My MH playing friends thought the same.

Nice to hear you've found many new games you enjoy (wish I could do the same). And that you have good taste as well.

@Litchie: Hope you find more games worth playing for yourself. I'm sure they're around somewhere ツ

Till then at least Rajang drops on P.C. very soon and Safi'jiiva following shortly after.

There are so many games coming out now that it's hard to get excited for any single game. I guess the last game i was REALLY looking forward to was Dark Souls 3 back in 2016, and yes, it lived up to expectations.

Absolutely love DkSIII, probably my favorite of the series. Recently been dipping into the remaster of DkS and I miss so many of the combat improvements from the third entry.

All great games regardless, including DkSII which gets too much hate honestly.

@RSM-HQ: DkSII:SotFS is actually my favorite dark-souls proper. (Bb is my favorite)

@MarkoftheSivak: Bloodborne is very good, but sadly has its own fill of problems.

@RSM-HQ: Curious if you could elaborate on those problems, not because I disagree but because I almost never see anyone criticize this game unless they dont like the Soulsborne games in general. I liked it a lot too but something always felt off about it for me.
