I would say overall just the excitement of upgrading to a newer more powerful and better looking console.
With Wii U it was hardware and games. I wanted to try out the GamePad, Miiverse and New Super Mario Bros. U. Though truth be told I've been unenthusiastic about this generation. It's been a slow start with the Wii U and the PS4 and Xbox One line ups don't do much for me either. There was a point where I really didn't care to play the Wii U since there was a lack of Nintendo software for, essentially, 8 months. 3DS was a different story.
The Wii U is just starting to get some great software now and the PS4 and Xbox One have little that I care about at launch. I'm likely going to wait until holiday 2014 before picking up a PS4 since I'm not really interested in picking one up for the hardware. It's just new hardware but it's not nearly as interesting as the Wii U since there's nothing really surprising about it. Though, I am interested to see if the dualshock feels nicer now. I was never a fan of the dualshock controllers before and coming from the Xbox 360 to a PS4 I think that's the one thing I'll miss the most.

Better looking console? have you seen the Xbone? i think it´s the worst console design in decades.
But i am getting the new consoles because they are new and improved and it means better games.
So far, I haven't been convinced.
I will be far more excited once I see more of the games as time goes on, all this pre-release hype and build up does nothing for me
It's always the games. If a console's got stuff I want to play, I'll buy it. If not, I'll hold off until it does.

that's a good rule to have
Mainly, New hardware, new possibilite. If this console is just a more powerful current gen console with pretty graphics, then forget it. I want innovation and something to blow my mind away. There's nothing so far that has blown my mind except indie titles and Titanfall.
Eight years of the existing ones.
Seriously, it's been time to move on for about three or four years now. Ridiculous that it didn't sooner.
Games for sure. Made the mistake back in the day by purchasing the Gamecube over PS2 because the Gamecube was more powerful. Well....none of the games on Gamecube were my taste and it colllected dust its entire life after I picked up a PS2. For me, I picked up the Xbox360 over PS3 years ago and have never regretted it - Forza and Halo series is all I need to make me happy.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts 3, and whatever Naughty Dog is cooking up.
Nothing yet. After last gen I wil wait at least a year untill they iron out the bugs and stabalize the hardware. However I will eventually upgrade for just that, to upgrade.
Well definitely not the best looking console. I'm excited about the graphics upgrade mostly. I'm just a big kid that will probably never truly grow up and in my opinion I think Dreamcast was the best looking console. Simple yet sophisticated and compact. The Xbox One looks very bland as for the PS4 looks contemporary which in other words simple yet sleek. Without Dreamcast my heart will continue to be broken as far as gaming. I'm really excited and impatiently waiting for the release of the PS4. Killzone and Driveclub awaits! :)
For me it was "all of the above".
I agree. All the good that the new generation brings should be experienced.
There is nothing in particular you want or you are looking forward to?
I'm sure I will upgrade at some point but I am not in a rush either. Both systems have yet to show me any must play titles that will not also be releasing on current gen consoles. Everything they have shown so far has been underwhelming outside of the obvious visual enhancements. So I voted for graphics due to the lackluster showing of games thus far.
Because I like the hardware and because there are games announced which I'm looking forward to such as FFXV and KH3.
I'm actually buying a backwards compatible 60 GB PS3 and going through the PS1, PS2, and PS3 library instead of buying a PS4. The Xbox One doesn't appeal to me, and let's face it, the PS4/Xbox One are going to be around for another decade or so before their successors are released, and I see no reason to pick up either at launch for their respective prices. The really good, definitive next gen experiences won't be around for another few years or so. Maybe in 2016, when the PS4 and the Wii U get a marginal price cut along with a solid library, I'll get both. But for now, I'm in no hurry and I'd urge others to not buy in to the hype so quickly. A PS4 slim or PS4 3D or whatever technological innovation is waiting throughout the decade will arrive in no time.
Wii U: Because it's getting the best exclusives in large quantities (Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World, Smash Bros., Sonic Lost World, Bayonetta 2, the Wonderful 101, X, etc.)
PS4: I'll pick it up when it starts getting the 3rd party support Wii U won't get (my eyes are square on Rocksteady's next project)
Answer: games
The reason I'm picking up a PS4 on launch is simple: Microsoft.
I know it sounds snarky, but this is definitely a thing. Three people in my office (myself included) were diehard Xbox fans this generation, all are buying PS4's at launch, and all of us agree that Microsoft helped sell those PS4's just as much as Sony has.
