I picked a dark elf in both skyrim and oblivion. They seem very cool to me and habe great balanced skills in the things i loke, like light armoir, 1 handed sword, and DESTRUCTION magic!! What about you guys? I am curious. The reason i didnt make a poll was causee there Are so many races in the game.
I played as a Breton because they're human. And the Nords were kind of ugly :P I just can't relate to playing as some weird alien race. The specific abilities of each race didn't make any difference anyway as once you leveled up a few times that stuff was meaningless.
I just started playing and, for reasons that now escape me, I went with Argonian. And I'm kinda regretting it. I suspect the underwater breathing won't be all that useful, and I find I'm enjoying magic and bows more than melee combat. So I probably would've done better choosing a High or Dark Elf. I'm just not sure if I really want to start over...
Nord, Mainly cause they're based on Skandinavians, which I happen to be. But It doesn't mean I'm restricted to just that race, I just lean more towards them..or the Orcs.
I admit to being speciest with my fantasy games:P. I pretty much never play anything that isn't human-like. Sometimes I'll play an elf, but not in TES as the elves are all very alien looking. So i play Breton, Redguard, Nord and Imperial exclusively. Also, any modded races that are human like (the Temptress, for example), i'll play. Overall, the Breton is kinda hard to resist because its racial perk is just extremely useful for every kind of build. I don't really care for the overly poutty cheeks on the females, though.
I went with Argonian and while the underwater breathing thing is nothing special the hitskin ability is quite useful. Generally any class can be made into whatever you want so its not that important what you start as.
For my first playthrough I always pick the corresponding race for the region, so in Morrowind it was a Dark Elf, in Oblivion a Imperial and in Skyrim a Nord.
Man, I had a pretty hard time to decide what I want to be in Arena though and ended up there with a Dark Elf Spellblade.

Oh yeah? Than let's do a diving contest. Whoever survives longer underwater wins. You guessed right, my race - or rather species - is the Argonian. I'd just slap on my enchanted waterbreathing ring and be good :P I think most of the race bonuses are insignificant after a while, but I don't know them all off the top of my head.
Redguard battlemage vampire lord, Dark Elf illusion/conjuration/bound bow assassin, and Orc Restoration/Alteration/Paladin werewolf. Each have different playstyles but dark elf is my main because it's the most fun. Go invisible cast two dremora lords and throw in fury and just watch them fight my battles.

Generally the racial bonuses are pretty useless, which is why there's more than one mod out there that revamps them. However, the Breton's 25% magic resistance is extremely useful... and then there's the punchcat.
