I recently beat MGS Twin Snakes for the first time and it was not bad! Not better than the original, but was still cool to see this version of the game. I also started a playthrough of Silent Hill 2 and I love it. About 6 hours in and it’s one of the best horror games I’ve played. I also have copies of SH3 and SH4 that I want to play. As for other games, want to play through Viewtiful Joe 1 & 2 whose copies I’ve secured as well.

How about you, GD? What old/classic games are on your bucket list?

Lots, but a big one is Deus Ex. I own it, but don't want to start unless I can really devote some time to it. Maybe in ten years when my kids are teenagers and want nothing to do with me.

Viewtiful Joe is a masterpiece btw. Enjoy :)

As recommended on the forum I'm currently playing the Shantae series. Beat Risky's Revenge, I've now started Pirate's Curse.

@SolidGame_basic: Nice man glad to hear you enjoyed Twin Snakes.

I have been playing Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door for GameCube lately, but that's about it in terms of old games... Really debating if I should play something else, I liked the first Paper Mario but this one bores me to hell.

@SolidGame_basic: I cannot believe that however I always thought Metroid Prime was a little overrated anyway. I prefer 2D Metroid. I recently beat Metroid Dread and damn it was good.

EMMI sections were cool and all. It was like a distinct idea they haven't done before (I don't think) just for this game. This really makes me wonder if Samus Returns was any good however I don't have a 3DS :(. What I liked best about dread is just the fact that it played exactly like the old games with a new coat of paint, they didn't really reinvent the wheel here. And of course, the various epic boss battles.

It's not that I don't like Metroid Prime but really it came along at a time where most other FPS was just bigger and badder than it, and Metroid Prime was like an artsy fartsy game by comparison. The original also didn't have multiplayer, which was huge at the time for games like early CoDs, Halo, 007 games etc.

The two that come to mind are:

Majora's Mask - I'll probably play through Ocarina of Time again before I touch this one. It's been since 2015 after all.

Chrono Trigger - I've played through part of it and couldn't appreciate it as much as I would have liked to at the time. But, I've had the urge recently to revisit the game.

I mostly play older stuff. My backlog of retro is so long at this point that I don't really have much time for newer stuff, which tends to look pretty bland and boring to me by comparison so that's fine. Currently I am doing a full playthrough of the Tomb Raider series, which I missed out on completely, and have currently completed 7 of them over the past few weeks... slogging my way through TR3. Afterwards I may do a full playthrough of MGS1, and finish my playthrough of Quake 1. And I haven't played Resident Evil: Nemesis in 20 years so that'll get played soon too.

About to fully finish Blood and its expansion pack.

Be going back and playing either Dark Forces or another build engine game, probably the original Shadow Warrior.

Expansions (both of them) for Blood are quite meaty. Modern DLC garbage comparison.

After playing TMNT shredders revenge I would love to get my hands on Manhattan heist on the mega drive. I know this coming to the cowabunga collection but just to add that to my collection would be great.

Ninja Gaiden (if it counts as old). Just downloaded Sigma from gamepass. Hopefully it's not the worst version of the game..

Deus Ex. Never knew about it when it was current.

Zelda: Majora's Mask. Tried a few times, never got hooked. Keep hearing praise. It's annoying, I also want to love it!

Earthbound

Powerslave (Exhumed)

If we keep in mind that Ninja Gaiden is an Xbox 2005 game, I would say it counts as retro.

As for the Sigma version it's better than many fans give credit, more bosses and enemy types while removing the puzzles (which I wouldn't say NG did a very good job to begin with)

However you do have to play as a side character in random chapters, and it's not optional which can be pretty annoying.

The other character doesn't play bad either, it is more a pacing issue. An easy fix would have been to give the other character a separate mode but they threw it in the main-game and are apparently too stubborn to learn and did it again in Sigma 2.

I have too many games to count on my bucket list. I think I can only focus on like one game at a time though.

Dragon's Dogma. Now that the second game has been announced, I have an excuse to play it. I'm only 10 hours in but it feels like a such a great game for its time. Great RPG elements. The combat is also amazing and even much better than some of the newly released games.

I really want to play the original Legend of Zelda again but it has to be on an original NES, not one of those new systems with classic games. I'll need some Funyuns, Zero candy bars, and Faygo soda as well to make it a complete experience.

I want to play all the Zelda games in chronological order on the original systems. I also want to eat period specific snacks while I'm playing. Elon Musk can go to Mars all he wants, this is my dream.

Legacy of the Wizard.

Was the one and only NES game I couldn't beat as a kid, which annoyed me greatly lol. Then for years forgot what it was even called until stumbling across it on Youtube years back.

One of these days gotta put this one behind me, avenge my 7 year old self.

Eh, Litchie you've probably seen more of my Ninja Gaiden posts than you care to remember. Sigma 1 isn't bad, base game is too good to ruin. Though the additions the other poster brought up aren't really a positive. New enemy types all just straight up suck. Bosses more of a mixed bag, with Gamov (low rent Riddler) being the highlight. Not really worth the tradeoff imo, though the games issues go deeper than a few content additions/subtractions.

All that said, still a good game, you'll still get the general experience of Ninja Gaiden Black.

Unfortunately the best way to play NGB and NG2 are through BC on a modern Xbox. I bought a XBX specifically for these games, but that's kind of a big ask if you're not some megafan who plays these games dozens of times over.

@SolidGame_basic: Yeah I mean no doubt I'm a big fan of some of their games. Consider Bayo1 and TW101 to be top notch in the genre. Vanquish and Bayo 2 to be pretty great. MGR pretty good. Probably more accurate to say I'm a fan of Kamiyas work, guy hasn't missed yet. Platinum is wildly inconsistent, but anyways, whole other convo there. (pedantic time, but VJ is Clover Studios, couldn't resist lol)

Only played the first Viewtiful Joe, remember enjoying it a lot. Though I didn't play it to death, was back in the early 2000s when sick games were dropping regularly. I've also been meaning to revisit the first and give the second a go.

Playing it on PS2 I take it? Wasn't really sure if those games hit other platforms.

I think it came out on GameCube first, and then made it’s way to PS2. And I think the PS2 version lets you play as Dante from DMC lol. I started playing it and I love it, especially the concept. I just wasn’t in the right mood to play it because I had finished MGS Twin Snakes and Silent HIll 2 and my appetite for retro is satisfied for now haha. But I will definitely go back to it.

You ever play Silent Hill 2? 20 years later and I finally did. What a masterpiece!

Oh shit you're right, actually think it was the GCN version I played too. Man, was a great time to own all consoles.

Yeah Silent Hill 2 is sick. Another I haven't played since way back when, would love to give it another go.

Edit: You ever play Fatal Frame 2 or Siren? Not exactly a recommendation, been ages, but I enjoyed those a lot too. They're no SH2, but still. Remember Siren being a bit rough, but pretty unique.

Can't even remember if I tried 3 and only played a bit of 4. Too bad that user reduc/wanderinghalls/whatever isn't around, seemed like a SH pro lol.

Yeah man, Tactics Ogre is a good time. Reminds me, that game Symphony of War looks fun. Though probably more in common with Ogre Battle. I'm a strategy/tactics newb tbh, only dabble these types of games.

@Litchie:

I played Sigma on PS3 but never made it passed the ship. Been playing Sigma on Game Pass and it's great. Plan to beat Sigma 2 as I never beat it on PS3.
