My definition of the greatest game ever made?

Shadow of the Colossus.

I am all for the "no great game can be objectively superior to another great game" but this is the exception in my case. No other game I have played in my life has effected me on such a deep and emotional level.

chess, haha anyway, great story original, genre-bending gameplay difficult but not to the point where its annoying a strong art style (note: i am not talking about overall graphics, im saying it has to look original and thought-out) boss battles!!! i think thats pretty much it

1. Fully destructible growth, buildings and damage that stays. So if you burn grass it'll take a while to grow back and if you blow up a building it's gone forever.

2. More realistic animations and physical abilities, like being able to push and punch and kick and you hear a realistic sound and can see your fist or hands or feet make contact. Same with swords and bullet wounds and recoil and blocking attacks.

3. Weather effects and a meter that tells you if you're cold or hot or what and you have to add or remove clothes accordingly.

That's all I can think of right now.

For me, my current experiences would say City of Villains is the closest thing.

Most players around the world, their current experience would says WoW.

  • Open world that's free to be explored at your own pace, but at the same time offers structure and clear goals to work towards
  • Level design that balances combat, puzzle solving, and exploration perfectly
  • Memorable, epic soundtrack
  • Art style that is realistic enough to take seriously when it needs to be, but slightly exaggerated to allow uniqueness, style and light-heartedness need be.
  • Non cookie-cutter NPCs that you actually remember and somewhat care about
  • Diverse locals with varying themes that keeps things fresh
  • Epic and unique boss battles
  • Difficulty level thats difficult enough to keep you on your toes but not so much that needlessly have to repeat the same segments over and over.
  • Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

A game that is so fun I can still remember it in vivid detail many years later. It's been 15 years since I played zelda: a link to the past, but I can still hum every tune in that game, name every weapon and tool in it, and remember the layout and boss fight of every dungeon. that's the greatest game ever.
