No, this isn't a trick question LOL. But, I wanted to get your opinion what you think the best movie based on a video game is?

Even though it had some confusing moments, Silent Hill for me.

I suppose you could also post a great video game that was made based on a movie as well. I'll probably get more answers out of that. lol

Motal Kombat.

Only because it is the ONLY movie that was faithful to the source material.

Of course sequel completely butchered that.

I don't know why Hollywood is so dead set on making games into movies. I know they are out of idea, but in general, game story rarely is good fit for movies.

Not to mention the name alone doesn't sell enough.

Hollywood should look into other material.... like anime.

3x3 Eyes (anime movie) can straight up be a movie if they just take everything and directly make it into live action. Not to mention the length and story is perfect to be 2 movies.

Unlike Dragonball which was never suited to be a live-action movie due to it's presentation and character design.

On second thought, scratch that idea. I'm sure Hollywood will ruin that by adding "western" feel to the whole thing and butcher one of my favorite anime/manga series.

Personally there are few good adaptations out there.

I like thed the first resident evil movie alot, i also enjoyed Hitman, Max Payne and of course Tomb Raider.

But there are also the worst adaptations to consider, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation andHouse of the dead

I Totally agree with you about the mortal kombat movies. The first was good, the second...terrible. Personall I'd like to see a live-action Fullmetal Alchemist movie. But some shows just aren't suited to live action. i mean cna you imagine a gundam wing movie, god it would be so cheesey.

Agreed. I liked the MK movie as well. I liked all the RE movies. I didn't think they were awful. Although the first two were better than the third one. Now there's another one in the works. Yay? lol Remember the Mario Bros. movie back in the day? hahahaha

Mortal Kombat. The Liu Kang vs. Reptile fight made it a worthwhile watch.

There ARE some games with stories that would be good movie.

Shadow Hearts series.

Suikoden V (1 and 2 would be too cheesy as movie)

Final Fantasy Tactics

God of War series (which would be Mythology version of 300)

etc etc etc.

As long as they don't **** it up, those are some games with materials that can work as movies.

Of course instead of those, hollywood goes with games with big name. Doesn't matter if it can work as movie or not, they just go with it with shallow thoughts of selling based on it's name.

I guess once God of War III is out and Krato's story ends, the movie version will eventually follow, so that might be a movie to look forward to (of course it's all just potential. Hollywood is great at ****ing **** up). Until then, expect more of same ol' garbage.

lol Yes, a D-Ex movie would be very good. How about a FEAR movie? It would be like The Ring only with a more violent little girl. lol

The first Mortal Kombat was a good movie.

Too bad the sequel couldn't follow suit

Yeah the MK movies were good. Much better than the pile of crap that was the Street Fighter movies! Even the greatness that is Tim Curry couldn't save it.

I'd have to give the nod to Silent Hill. While not a great film by any means, you can tell that Christopher Gans put some care into adaptation and for the most part, remained true to the SH franchise (save for the last 30 minutes or so). Lifting the OSTs from the series was a nice touch as well. IMO, it sets the bar, albeit a mediocre bar, for video game movie adaptations. At the least one can say that it wasn't a shameful cash-in.

The rest of the movies based off games are beyond embarrassing.

Totally agree. SH kinda lost me for that last half hour. lol I thought it was maybe a little too long anyway. But watching that movie I totally felt Silent Hill, and it was great they used some of the game music as well. (At least one or two tracks anyway) Especially that main theme with the piano there? Great stuff.

Final Fantasy Advent Children

While not great, it is still an entertaining movie to watch. Especially if you have played the game through.

Advent Children is like a movie sequel to FF7 isn't it? I know they made a Final Fantasy movie that had it's own story and stuff, but AC is based on FF7, no?

I haven't seen Max Payne, Hitman, Postal, Far Cry, Dead or Alive, Alone in the Dark, BloodRayne, or House of the Dead.

From what I have seen:

  • Doom was a huge fail
  • Tomb Raider was alright
  • Silent Hill was blah (could have been better)
  • Street Fighter (not that Chun Li crap) was fun
  • Mortal Kombat... can't remember
  • The Resident Evil movies were ridiculously boring
  • Super Mario Bros. was entertaining

Out of those I've seen, the Tomb Raider flicks were the strongest; probably for the fact that the character wasn't too out there and it's basically a female Indiana Jones adventure. Street Fighter and Super Mario Bros. were good fun... don't know why people hate them, not as though the two films were made to be taken seriously.

The Resident Evil franchise was a major disappointment for me. I don't know how you can really go wrong with a zombie flick. And to be honest, the filmmakers probably would have been better off just straight-out copying the games. It was painful to watch characters from the game become some hallowed, useless character that is just there to appease fans of the games.

Yeah, AC is the story after FF7.

The first Final Fantasy movie was a new story, not linked to any of the games... I think.

Ah, I had forgotten about the Tomb Raider movies. While only being mostly garbage, still rubbed me the wrong way. The hyper-commercialization of Lara Croft was what dragged the series down in the first place before Crystal Dynamics revied the series to respectability.

I liked both Advent Children and Spirits Within.

Oddly enough, maybe the best game-to-movie adaptation is the original Mortal Kombat. Beyond that, just about everything sucks.

I agree with you, Silent Hill is a best movie based on video game. The story, thrill, and zombies is perfect.
