I haven't played the second Layton game yet, but the Ace Attorney series as a whole is fantastic, and definitely worth checking out. The puzzles probably aren't as good in the AA games (and they're completely different - more about paying enough attention to the facts of the case to know what questions to ask and what evidence to present), but they're far better integrated into the story than the ones in the PL games.
