I've seen this term used a lot recently, and understand that it means a high-quality game, but I don't see how to differentiate between AA, AAA and AAAA games without just giving my opinion. So please give me a hand people, and explain what you think makes a game an AA, AAA or AAAA game?

Typically, there's two different terms in play at the same time:

In the mentality of gamers (especially in system wars), AAA refers to a game that gets a 9 or higher as a score (namely from GS for the purposes of arguments), if I'm not mistaken.

In the terms of the actual pro game community, AAA refers to a game that essentially has a rather large budget behind it. I'll have to find out what the exact numbers are, but most likely a multi-million dollar budget would be a likely candidate to be a AAA game.

Its just some useless rating system based on the reviewers opinion. People who use it think that if a game is hyped AAA and gets a A that its a flop ... lol give me a break. PC gamers tend to use it because they say they have the most AAA games or AAAA games ... and yet it means nothing because its all the personal reviews/players opinion and it means nothing.

Thanks guys, I get it now.

People generally base it on reviewer's opinions as apposed to their own (or as you mentioned the budget idea, but it's hard to know the budget of a game). That kinda makes sense, but like you said it's just their opinion.

The ratings pretty much speak for themselves but I've also seen the budget or really hyped games get labeled AAA right away.

Games like FFXIII, Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Fallout 3 people will say are AAA games.
