Need a little advice here- since i'm working on a RE4 review and a deadspace review.

I'm still unsure as to whether RE4 is considered survival horror because it wasn't scary 95 percent of the time.

How scary a game is- is a bit to subjective to say for certain, and hallmarks of the survival horror genre have been thrown away lately (clunky movement, changing camera angle, scarcity of all items, etc)

So, what qualities do games need to be considered in the "survival horror" sub-genre?

This pretty much sums it up :)

Survival horror is a subgenre of action-adventure video game inspired by horror fiction. These games make the player vulnerable by providing them with less ammunition and fewer heavy weapons than other action games. Although combat is a part of the gameplay, the player must ration ammunition by evading enemies and avoiding direct confrontation. The player is also challenged to find items that unlock the path to new areas, and solve puzzles at certain locations. Games make use of strong horror themes, and the player is often challenged to navigate dark maze-like environments, and react to unexpected attacks from enemies.

The term "survival horror" was first used for the original Japanese release of Resident Evil in 1996, which was influenced by earlier games with a horror theme such as Sweet Home and Alone in the Dark. The name has been used since then for games with similar gameplay, and has been retroactively applied to games as old as Haunted House from 1981. Starting with the release of Resident Evil 4 in 2005, the genre began to incorporate more features from action games, which has led game journalists to question whether long-standing survival horror franchises have abandoned the genre. Still, the survival horror genre has persisted in one form or another.

First time I played, in the earlier stages of the game I ran out all the time. Ended up using a sword :).

Altered my playing style and I rarely had that trouble again.

You could say they (RE4, RE5, Dead Space) had a horror theme and atmosphere, but calling them survival games would be like calling every other action game a survival game considering your trying to avoid harm. Also, just to get in on the discussion, my first playthrough on the mission 'Those!' on Fallout 3 gave me an experience akin to Aliens, considering I was poorly equipped with little ammo and equipment with little health.

RE4, to me, easily qualifies as a Survival horror game. You have to rescue Ashley, while keeping both of yourselves alive then escape. Some people may think differently though.

RE5, on the other hand, is a different story. There's nothing scary in the game at all. Even as an action game, it's complete trash. Broken AI, broken controls, and broken item selection.

Survival Horror is used to describe any action game that has a horror theme.

Fallout 3 is an RPG/FPS, not an action game. Plus, while it has some missions that were horror themed (e.g. the Dunwich building) the main theme of the game is not horror. Ghouls exist in the game because of sci-fi reasons (scientific result of nuclear war) not a supernatural reason.

"Scary" is definitely not going to be helpful in determining whether a game is survival horror because most people don't agree on what scary is. Take your example of Dead Space, there are always threads here full of people who insist that they were scared to death when they played that game. I've played thru Dead Space twice and other than a few jump out at you type scares, I fail to see what people could possibly find so terrifying when they play that game. Just goes to show that there are very few things out there that scare everyone equally.

An escort mission is hardly survival horror. You still had all your weapons, ammo, and health items at your disposal. Nothing frightening about that. Ashley was just dead weight meant to add another challenge in parts of the game and it's not like she was difficult to protect. Contrast Ashley in RE4 to Shelly in RE2. Shelly was an 8 year old schoolgirl that you found in a zombie infested police station. At one point in the game you're given control over Shelly and have to navigate her around Cerberus dogs and zombies that projectile vomit acid. Shelly has no items or weapons she can use because she's only an 8 year old little girl. So basically you have to run around a courtyard, garage, and pumping facility infested with quick moving enemies and enemies with projectile attacks as a little girl who can't use any items or weapons. All you can do is run away. So to review: RE4 = Here's a ditzy college student that you have to protect. Here, take this shotgun, magnum, pistol, submachine gun, rocket launcher, ammo, grenades, and a ton of health items just in case you or her get hurt. Oh yeah, and all of the weapons are upgraded to be more powerful of course. RE2 = Hey, that character you have just finally found a decent weapon? Great! But why don't you take a break from that for a second and play as a child with abandonment issues for awhile. Okay, now let's get you geared up. Here, take this Japanese schoolgirl uniform. Wow, well, that character certainly looks pretty overpowered now so let's throw in the most dangerous zombies in the game that you're only ever going to see in this section of the game to try to even things out. Alright, look's like that's everything, good luck!

If you found her, or you were looking for her, it's still the same concept. And you DO play as Ashley without any weapons in parts of the game. Have you ever played the game?

Probably the first 2 resident evils (I guess 3 as well since the Nemesis pretty much drains all your ammo) and the Silent Hill series (The first two as well I guess).

Wikipedia categorizes "survival horror" as a sub-genre of action-adventure, and it's not a bad classification. But the defining characteristic is the horror aspect of the game. Back in the day survival horror games I was first exposed to were Alone in the Dark, and RE games on the PS1, and later i was exposed to games like Silent Hill and Fatal Frame, Siren Blood Curse, F.E.A.R., Condemned, Dead Space, Metro 2033, Alien vs Predator, Alan Wake. Older games typically had limited resources to add to tension and the "survival" aspect, newer games have taken on a more narrative approach so action has taken more root. Older games typically were 3rd person while newer ones are using 1st person as well. Newer games also don't limit you to less weapons and ammo, but they also don't give you a limitless supply very often. Some games aren't truly scray though, but still maintain a story driven horror aspect. Older games use to have a lot more puzzle aspects to them as well, less so these days. I love this genre though, one of my favorite, you really have to make an effort to enjoy it to its fullest, such as playing late at night with the lights off, a good large TV with surround sound is also beneficial. I hate it when people try to buzz-kill and say most these games aren't scary or enjoyable though.

Yeah, I don't think there's much more to add to that description.

A horror game is usually scary, and you find yourself in situations most hairy, so says Mr. Stewart.

Think Survivor (the TV show), except in a dark hospital with zombies in it.
