Here's mine

1. Crusader Kings II (with all the DLCs) - IMO the greatest RPG of all time, the level of character depth in this game is unbeatable, you can basically build/take a character from scratch and turn him/her into anything you want, thus creating your own story, the choices are practically endless.

2. Fallout 2 - IMO the best in the franchise, Fallout 2 did everything better than what FO 1 did.

3. Baldur's Gate 2 - The quintessential RPG of the early 2000s.

4. Planescape: Torment - IMO the storytelling in this game is unmatched even in today standards

5. Darklands - Darklands is a great adventure and is certainly one of the best multicharacter RPGs in the 90's, for a game from 1992, its well-drawn graphics, multiple quests, good character generation, and flexibility in play, the game's detail is phenomenal.

Honorable Mentions:

Legend of Legaia

TESV: Skyrim

Mass Effect 2

Diablo 2

Witcher 3

Action RPG-

  • Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
  • Dark Souls III
  • Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen

*Already expressed why I enjoy a lot of these games numerous times. So unless asked, will pass adding my thoughts.

This is hard but I'll list ones that stand out. In no particular order:

FFVII

FFX

Super Mario Odyssey

Popolocrois

Tales of Graces F (Never finished this one. It's been a while since I played it but from what I remember it was pretty great.)

Star Trader: Frontiers (indie title that is surprisingly deep in what you can do)

Rimworld. Another indie that was a wild ride.

TES: Skyrim

Final Fantasy IV...ancient but at the time I loved it.

Ultima 1-3

Baulders Gate II, except...I semi-recently picked up another (revised version) and ya...it's not aged well. Few things do mind you.

and probably Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic.

  1. Panzer Dragoon Saga
  2. Final Fantasy VI
  3. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
  4. Pyre
  5. Fallout: New Vegas

OK, so Pyre is probably much less of an RPG than the others on this list, and maybe fits more into the adventure genre. Next would be Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky if it doesn't count. (I guess even there RPG is debatable, so after that is Dragon Age: Origins I think.)

It is super cool to see you mention Darklands, OP. That's one of my favourites. And it's of course awesome to see another mention of Panzer Dragoon Saga here.

  • Jagged Alliance 2
  • Ultima 7
  • Skyrim
  • Final Fantasy 2 SNES
  • Chrono Trigger SNES & Chrono Cross on the PSX

Hard to fill out a top 5 rpg list. I can't fully support all of these that strongly these days. So few you can replay without massive boredom.

I did have strong feelings for these on my first playthrough in which i loved these games... but I don't stand by most of them now nor do I think I could replay some of them.

Proud to put Jagged Alliance 2 on it though, i can play this game and always feel like i'm role playing as a genius mercenary. Its not really a full rpg since its combat is turn based but it does have skill progression and non linear gameplay and decision making so it can be in the category.

Most of these games I maybe played through maybe twice to maximum of 3 times.

Skyrim lets be honest, the vanilla game without mods is mostly boring trash and can't keep anyones interest beyond the simple first time playthrough if that. The volume of available free mods are the thing that keep this game on my pc after all these years.

And my precious Ultima 7 while classic, is a game where the combat and exp system just doesnt work well nor does the combat and its a hard game to get into in modern times. I pick up the game almost each year, play it a few hours but then quit. Just not possible to get into these days, the core gameplay is too poor and dated.

Almost felt like putting Wizardry 8 on here but then i remember there is some monster scaling in the game, pisses me off so much. Makes leveling feel almost meaningless other than some skills you may gain, and its done strangely since not all monsters scale up just some areas. Insane difficult game though, even on Easy you will run into fights where you can die. Classic Sir-tech.

I liked the Fallout 3/4/New Vegas games, but then again.... played them once and felt like I never wanted to go through them ever again.

Dark Arisen or base?

Don't know if I could personally tolerate base Dogma anymore honestly.

Yeah it would be a weird world in which one can only access the original release lol.

Love the Everfall and Ur-Dragon but outside of that the base game hinders its own strengths I find. From poorly spying on a poor plot twist to baby-sitting a brat. .

Meanwhile BitterBlack Isle is just fantastic. If we ever get a real Dogma 2 I hope they structure it like a huge and expansive version of that expansion.

Capcom is supposedly reviving two dormant IPs during the Jump Festa, here is hoping for Dragon's Dogma 2!

1. The Witcher 3 - Not only is it a replayable 100hr+ journey, it's one that nails everything from side quests to music to gameplay and story. Definitely one of the best games ever created.

2. Bloodborne - The best Souls game in my opinion. The fast viseral combat, the setting, level design and bosses were all outstanding.

3. Mass Effect 2 - A huge step up from the first game, combat was vastly improved. The narrative was very interesting and the characters were very well written.

4. Persona 5 - As far as JRPG's go, this is pretty stellar. They managed to make an engaging turn based battle system. Humorous, relatable characters and an interesting world with a wholesome story.

5. Castlevania Symphony of the Night - Strikes the right balance with difficulty for an action RPG. Constantly rewards you for exploring the castle and don't forget the music!
