X-Com: UFO Defense
King's Bounty
Master of Monsters & Dark Wizard on Sega Genesis /CD
Valkyria Chronicles
Romance of the Three Kingdoms X
Sengoku Rance
Those aren't bolded for any particular reason, btw.
@speeny: I've played the first one a long time ago. I remember it being fun and cute though I'm not sure about deep. Which entry is the best?
@doomnukem3d: It can get fairly tactical. I played the first one but never completed it. RSM-HQ seems to be pretty knowledgeable on them.
Disgaea 3 is regarded as mechanically the best entry in the series, however it uses the engine same as the original three games. So it's all depending if the player can look past not using the HD engine from Disgaea 4+. Personally I really like its look, but the definitive version is locked to the PSVita so hope you have one of those. . (needs a Switch port)
My personal favorite is the new Refine game (remake of the first game) solely because I just love the original and this is the cleanest and best version to date. It's a nice place to start because while I love D3, it has a lot thrown at you and the more straight forward original game just seems more consistent with its pacing and tutorial structure. D3 is the deep end of the series. Also not many oddly like the cast of D3, while I'm quite the fan, but the original game has easily the best cast of characters.
But 4 and past that are good games as well, though they've tried simplifying aspects since D3 because it was asking too much from new players.
@clefdefa: Its very easy to overpower with no effort because they chose to scale random battles but not mandatory ones. Theres a lot of set ups and classes that are easy to abuse and remove any effort. When they give you Cid you've practically won the game because hes so OP. In general it's just not a well thought out game. The roof of Riovanes castle is an especially egregious proof of this.
Disgaea I'd say.
This. A ton of fun stuff to do, and depending on how you play it, can be very tactical.
