It is the realistic shadowing of objects. The shadows are not entirely black or have clear defined edges like you see in many other games. Just take a look at shadows cast by the objects in your room when you turn on the light. The HBAO+ technology tries to mimic real life and increase the photorealism in the scene. Unfortunately, the tech is a frame rate killer and a beefy machine (ultra spec requirements) is required for Watch Dogs to look its best... at night (especially when it's raining).
There are more dusk and night scenes in the nVidia trailer than there are day scenes. So the real question is whether it is worth upgrading the pc just to have a prettier picture at certain times of the day?
