Does anybody else feel the same? I use to be pretty deep into MP games joined a clan back in the day from 2006-2012 and had some of the best gaming experiences ever. But the competitive side of me is pretty much gone. I also notice being in a clan spoiled me because we had our own server and we had so much fun together. But going from that to being a pub and just playing alone loses so much value I also have no interest in joining a clan anymore. I played the BFV open beta today and finally realized that I'm completely done with MP gaming it just doesn't do anything for me like it use to do. Has anybody else here have any similar experiences?

I thought so, but then this one kid made me look like a chump on Rocket League, and I've been on a mission to get even ever since.

Well I guess you're fucked then as MP are bigger than they have ever been and will only get bigger.

I saw a similar thread in January and it remains a "nope" for me. Love PvP in games like DkS, love coop in games like MH, Skirmish in WftO, and joining lobbies in Fighters like GG-Rev-.

Multiplayer games are the first I ever played, heavily in the arcade and found them very social, alone with some that got me into my favorite genres, so they hold a special place in my heart. And enjoy them even as I grow older_

Online multiplayer games however I've noticed can annoy people especially if they're impatient or suffer from depression. So the best I can advice is either only play with friends rather than randoms; or go in expecting some aggro personalities and ignore the attitudes. Gaming is about enjoyment, so if you get negative banter, block, ban, etc.

I also hope Capcom make a modern port of Outbreak, ironically it was the first Resident Evil game I ever played. And did so online ツ

Couldn't give a shit about online FPS now. Take too long, lots of random luck. Pointless unlocks, micotransactions, next game released in a year etc.. Exceptions of course, but when it comes to AAA games like Battlefield, less games and more pyramid schemes. Leaves a bad taste in your mouth most of the time.

Fighting games, 99 sec, skill based. 2 people, more depth, I find the genre much more appealing now. A few exceptions exist like Insurgency, but it's very "who cares" compared to the 90's and early 2000's.

I still love multiplayer gaming probably more than single player gaming. The only thing that has changed is that the older I get the harder it is for me to participate in multiplayer gaming.

As I get older, it becomes more and more difficult to get together locally with my friends for some couch multiplayer, but when we do, these are still my favorite gaming moments.

Also, as I get older, I have less and less time to practice on online multiplayer games which makes it more difficult to be good in online multiplayer games when I'm playing against people that can spend all day and night just practicing on these games whereas I'm lucky if I get just 4 or 5 hours a week.

I've found the opposite to be true. Increasingly, gaming is a way for me to hang out with friends, talk over skype etc.

I still love me a good singleplayer game, but I'd say 60-70% of my gaming time these days is multiplayer. It used to be the other way around.

They've taken all the immaterial reward--winning, a great kill, etc--out of the multiplayer games and replaced it with material rewards such as unlocks, progression, levels, and so forth.

I used to enjoy multiplayer games when they were just games, now they're more about the time investment and work than anything. I stopped playing Counter-Strike when they added in skins and stuff, and I stopped playing TF2 when they added in all those extra items and gear. I probably would enjoy Battlefield more than I do, but EA is slowly turning what should be play into toil.

Insert time, receive item. Repeat.

@mrbojangles25: Then why not just ignore the material rewards and stay focused on winning, great kills, etc? I mean the immaterial things are still there so why let something silly like skins or other worthless items ruin your fun?

because someone with little skill but a lot of time can get something material that overcompensates and makes them better than someone with a little time but a whole lot of skill.

Developers call this making things fair but if they really cared they'd make a "ranked" option when looking for games and match people with similar playtimes/k:d ratios. Sometimes they do.

In the end, though, I agree with you I can get over the material aspects and just enjoy the game. It's why my k:d ratio is so abysmal in Battlefield but I am a top scorer, I just play the game.

I'm into multiplayer games more than ever, I probably play 90% of games online, mainly Halo:MCC and Battlefield 1 most of the time. Not into single player much anymore, play some NHL games,State of Decay 2 and Farcry 5 sometimes, but have turned away from the sp experience. Got bored of it.

My first extended experience with online gaming was with a Call of Duty game when I was like 14. Took maybe 3 years or so for me to start distancing myself from MP. It just became repetitive and no longer fun for me. I still dabble with online occasionally, but I don't think I'm ever going to spend 100+ hours online with a game ever again. Not sure how much of an age thing all of this is. I always liked SP games, it's just that MP was new and exciting to me for a period of time. But now a good SP experience is mostly all I want.

@warmblur: I think you just grew out of Battlefield. It is a dumb game and there's not much to it. You were probably enjoying the social aspect of hanging out with a familiar crowd more than the actual game by the sounds of things.

If your looking for a more weighty and grown up but similar game then I would suggest World of Tanks. It involves alot of strategy and alot more thinking than FPS arena shooters. It will take you about 500 games to actually figure out how not to die and another 500 to figure out even how to successfully score a (penetrating) hit but that is the draw of that game. It is extremely in depth but rewarding for the same reason. It never feels like a grind when your grinding up your crew skills in WoT for some reason.

For me it the most improved free game out of all of them as I played the beta then left it till last year to try it again and it blew my socks off. :)

I did end up turning chat off but it's not really that bad.

Then there is always Second Life. Old people still like that game right?

I do agree the BF series is pretty dumb now I came into the series around Battlefield 2 IMO the best BF game ever more tactical slower paced it didn't feel like COD back then. You're right I did enjoy the social aspects it enhanced the experience alot. I think I finally just lost the competitive side of me and I got tired of the repetition of these MP games maybe one day I'll try to go back to it again but not anytime soon.

@warmblur: yeah but the competition is more or less just twitch reflexes and camping in those games.

World of Tanks is a very deep game with a bit of a learning curve but you start out in tier 1 and just die and die and die until you can grasp the mechanics. If you can take dying and not get pissed off you might enjoy that game.

Do you think you will try it?

PS. Here is a hint. Once your spotted, everyone can see you and you are probably about to die. I didn't realise that at first.

That's normal. Once you work full time, you will incredibly lose interest in multiplayer games. Worklife considerably restricts the amount of gaming time.

Yes, I hate Rainbow Six Seige and Destiny 2. Its hard to play rainbow when you share the same account...I have enough focus to play a couple of matches and Destiny 2 is just garbage. Anyways, I always liked playing single player.

Alexa, define irony. "The person that wrote the essay on CD Projekt's sexism making an ageist comment a week later." Thanks, Alexa.

To the topic, I still like MP, but mostly because of the move to the games-as-a-service model. I particularly like games that allow me to build a character over time via achievements, unlocks, skins, additional content, etc. Has that old school D&D feel to me of bringing your character along through various campaigns and seeing them grow into something. As far as competitive multiplayer, I've never been competitive about videogames, and while I still enjoy comp casually, it generally doesn't motivate purchase decisions.

I love both MP and SP. My problem is that I can't dedicate as much time as I want to either. I do play more MP and sometimes I will scale back my MP to focus on playing through some SP campaigns.

It is best to play with people you know that way there's no negativity and it's enjoyable for everyone. :)

I played a lot of couch multiplayer with my cousin back in the day but I haven't really bothered with the online side of things. There's a pretty big online community that's developed around the Timesplitters games though, so I was thinking of picking up a used PS2 and jumping into that at some point. They have this program you can download on PC, and you hook the PS2 up with an ethernet cable.

As were going old school and making impractical suggestions, you could get a Dreamcast and a DreamPi and connect that to your router and play old Dreamcast games like Alien Front Online with the other 16 people who do that!

It varies with communities and the nature of the online game, but yes some popular games are known to have very toxic player-bases, and the reputation of these games invite those kind of personalities.

I still play randoms in some games that I know the majority player-base is positive. However for the most part, playing with randoms has a chance of being a miserable experience.

Multiplayer for me has always been about playing with my mates. I will often play FIFA Pro Clubs/PUBG/CoD etc etc if my mates are online to join me. However, if they're not I usually drift towards Single Player experiences. Love going old school and having mates bring round consoles and monitors and doing essentially a LAN party. Is it still technically a LAN party when connected via Internet? Hmm.

But yes, caring less about multiplayer, especially when on my own.

It's an interesting question. It's not only just online multiplayer games, but video games overall. Single player video games have taken more of my time in the current generation & I'm cool with that. I've only played one online mutliplayer game that's worthy of fun & that was Titanfall 2. I'll give Battlefield V a chance when it comes out in two months. But, I'll play in 2 to 3 matches (lol).

The only MP game I've invested a good amount of time into would be Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Other than that, I'm not really interested in playing MP.

I've had mates who have tried getting me into LoL, but strategic games have never caught my interest. I did play a bit of Hearthstone back in the day but never got far with it.

I almost exclusively play Single Player, except for War Thunder. That one has probably been the only Multiplayer Game that has held my interest for longer than a month, in Warthunder's case, since about 2015.

Although I created a new account back when I moved to my old house in march of this year because I wanted to start fresh for some reason. I've been doing pretty good though, about all I need to do is acquire the Tiger I, Panther, and KV-1 and I'll be right back where I was on my old account.

No. Multiplayer games have maintained their quality better than single player games have, generally speaking.

Yeah I stopped caring about being good for the most part. Modern MP games just don't connect with me at all while I feel SP games are evolving in the right way.

I can’t be competitive in shooting games; having to simultaneously jump and dodge and look for enemies and shoot and hide and run literally is too much for my brain.

And partly for that reason, I find no enjoyment with multiplayer Deathmatch/battle royale modes. There’s nothing fun about moving around your player and just repeatedly getting killed, even the few times you see an enemy and aim and shoot.

I don’t mind Rocket League. I’d imagine some sports MP games and the like can be more enjoyable.

The older I get, the less I care about everything. Multiplayer I still find quite enjoyable though. I just don't play with randoms.

I played the BFV open beta today and finally realized that I'm completely done with MP gaming it just doesn't do anything for me like it use to do. Has anybody else here have any similar experiences?

It's interesting because that's pretty much what I did. I played the BFV Beta also, and then I literally uninstalled the game within two plays and my PS+ subscription runs out in November and I thought....I don't need it. I'm much more into single player games now.

I never been big on MP game. I always felt so much behind ... like once I play the game and all, a lot of people are so good and played so many hours ... I never played as much ...

It is too long sometime to find a match.

I often buy games once they put the Game Of The Year edition etc ... so once I play many games people have more than a year of playing it so I get my ass wooped
