in my opinion I never felt god of war as brutal because its a fantasy action adventure , it never makes you feel nasty :-)

Gouging out eyes from the POV of the victim? Literally pulling off someone's head? Punching Hercules' face until it doesn't look like a face anymore? Sawing off someone's legs because you want their boots? God, I loved that game.
God of War so far for me, i don't usually go for the gory or really violent games, so that's the one for me
Mine was Boiling Point: Road to Hell
Never finished it despite many hours.

The recent Mortal Kombat, God of War III. Both wonderfully over the top.
God of War managed to do it in a way that felt more cartoony and less real, to me. I always "Oh man, that was awesome!". Whereas some of Mortal Kombat's fatalities I just thought. "Oh man, that was a bit excessive". So I'll go with Mortal Kombat for this one.
Volition's The Punisher. Frank Castle doesn't give a damn about criminals. No rehabilitation, no mercy, he will execute and torture to get information. He held a criminal to the fence of a rhinoceros cage and let the rhino gouge him. One of his execution moves involved sticking a flamethrower nozzle in the enemies mouth and igniting it.
It was delightful.
Here is a video I found of snippets from the game. Conveniently set to a jaunty tune!
yeah ive heard manhunt and god of war are as brutal as they come but I never played them....there was this FPS called solider of fortune (I think?) that was pretty brutal. The max payne games are too, not just they way you kill people but the messed up things that happen in the story.
God of War (all of them), Dead Space (all of them) and Mortal Kombat (all of them but mostly the last one with the neat graphics).

Hmm, there is a few brutal games, GTA, Manhunter, God of War , call of duty , Dishonored.
but its not real brutal.
I'd probably go with State of Emergency. While it wasn't the first game to allow you to commit wanton violence, the scale of the wanton violence you could commit was unprecedented. And there was really no point to doing it...just mow down a crowd with a machine gun, blow up a few with a grenade, then pick up a severed limb and beat the shit out of someone with it. It was cartoony and a bit satirical, but the level of the violence makes it more brutal than games with more detailed gore.
Manhunt 1 and 2 easily. Other games are usually so over the top that the violence is almost comical, stuff like GoW and Mortal Kombat (although both games do have some pretty violent stuff) but Manhunt is just insanely dark and violent in a really nasty way and the sounds, oh God the sounds.
I don't play a lot of gory games but based on what I remember, one of the games that I played that I think is gory is the Resident Evil Series...
