My personal best is KOTOR but the one's that get props from me are KOTOR 1+2, Mass Effect, Fallout 3, and while I haven't played it yet FFX seems to get attention.

I think the FF titles have usually had the best storylines but people aren't giving enough love to the Suikoden franchise. Some of the best plots right there.

Oh yeah i forgot to mention this also....

i especially loved the story of sukoden 2. I think this has the greatest tale out of all the suikoden series.

It seems like a lot users on this post are calling out Planescape: Torment (a game I have unfortunately never heard of!) as a game with an excellent story with excellent storytelling. Can you also please share how deep or well-executed the character development is? Also, how many hours does it take to complete? (RPGs used to be my favorite genre, except I am not as willing to spend so many hours into a game as I used to...) and where would be the easist place to acquire a copy of this old school PC game? I know this game is not an RPG but it sounds intriguing to me -- anyone interested in Heavy Rain (PS3)? It appears to be a heavy story/character-driven game, something that I find rare nowadays.

As far as JRPGs go, it's Xenogears. No contest.

My favorite RPG story has to be Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2. There were so many plot twists that happened that just made me go crazy and in the end everything was ok.

I think the best RPG story was KOTOR. That was a great game.

I loved KOTOR, thought it was one of the greatest games ever, so you'll get no argument from me there. I thought Mass Effect had more interesting characters, but the overall depth of the story was lacking, and particularly the character of the villain was a letdown relative to the excellent Darth Malek in KOTOR.

Agreed. And I still have a mint condition copy of Suikoden II. ;)
