I recently acquired a brand new slim PS2, and quite a bit of money with which to buy games for it. I bought it mainly for its extensive RPG library, but I'm a bit overwhelmed with choices. I immediately bought FFX and FFXII, but beyond that, what would you guys reccomend?
If you want darker themed and generally harder rpgs then I recommend all the ps2 (they're the only ones I've played) SMT games, well maybe not SMT: Devil Summoner. If you're going to start with any of those I recommend starting with P3: Fes, it's not the hardest of the SMT games and it's a great introduction to SMT. I also recommend that you get SMT: Nocturne and the first SMT: Digital Devil Saga as those have been recently reprinted and you wouldn't want to spend double their retail price later on.

FFX was an excellent choice. I'd also suggest Kingdom Hearts I + II as well as Dragon Quest VIII (WARNING: very old school)
The Suikoden series are outstanding RPGS available for the Playstation. I would get a copy of Suikoden V if you really want to get a feel of the series. Part 5 brings Suikoden back to its original charm and glory of the PS1 era. It should be still available from the internet if you look in the right places. Definitely a must buy for rpg fans.
Also...I have not played Suikoden 4 but most people despised that game for its poor production quality. It seems as people pretty much view that game as the black sheep of the series. Suikoden III was also a nice sequel but my attention span was limited for whatever reason when I played it, but many seem to enjoy that one as well.
It seems every time I come onto a RPG thread I learn something or need to buy another RPG. Makes me so happy that good games are always out there if you want to look or simply ask!
To answer the question though anything I would recommend is put up:)
As for Suikoden's, any of them are worthwhile, but don't expect a ton from IV. It's still decent (and better than a lot of RPG's that come out) but it's not up to snuff with the rest of the series. I'm hard pressed to recommend any of the others over each other, because they're all great. 3 is probably my favorite though.
Some of the people in this topic said that Dark Cloud 2 is amazing. I have to say the gameplay was very good, but the story was god awful.Chrono66
Huh. I personally found DC2's story pretty good, better then the paper-thin plot of DC1, at least (then again, Dark Cloud 2 is a VAST improvement over the original).
Anyways, some more RPGs that have yet to be mentioned:
-Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner
-Atelier Iris
-Digimon World 4(really more of an action/hack n slash rpg, but still decent).
-Shining Force NEO (the voice acting could be a bit better though.

I heard Radiata Stories is good ... but I have yet to play it.
BTW, I loved Suikoden 2 (but for some reason, wasn't a big fan of Suikoden 3); is Suikoden 4 or 5 anything like 2? Just felt like 3 sort of lost its original charm.
next time you decide to recommend games to people who have probably never heard of them, don't include just the abbreviated form of it... WTF IS SMT... how am I supposed to know that?Â
iam playing rogue galaxy right now this game is awesome ! i have so far as rpgs okage shadow king dark cloud final fantasy X rogue galaxy i want to buy dragon quest 8 soon
Persona 4, Persona 3 FES, Tales of the Abyss, and Dragon Quest VIII are all really great. I still have yet to play Kingdom Hearts. I'll have to play the PS3 version.
