What Is The Best 2D Metroid Game?

For me it's Super Metroid, EASILY! The game is not only the best 2D Metroid game, it's the best Metroid game. And not only is it the best Metroid game, but it's also one of the greatest games ever made. Everything about it comes together perfectly. It's music, it's look, it's pacing, the explorative nature of the game, and the oh-so eerie atmosphere just pushes you obsessively further and further into the depths of Planet Zebes.

Super Metroid, followed by Fusion, then Zero Mission. The first two are decent but I don't care for them as much as the others.

Super and Zero Mission are the best...with Super getting a slight nod.

Fusion would be great if it wasn't so generous with its health tanks or at least gave difficulty playthrough options like Zero Mission.

I don't like games where I have to deliberately cripple myself to make the game more competitive.

But this is coming from a perspective where I beat all the 2ds multiple times so idk.

Straight tie between Zero Mission and Fusion. I never beat Super Metroid, so I think it would be unfair to judge it just yet.

The only way a person doesn't pick Super Metroid is if they haven't played it...that's the way I see it.

Please explain. I'd love to know your reasoning since I'm currently playing Fusion again, but I don't think that at all. Samus handles better, but I still think Super is a better a game.

I have not played Fusion in a really long time, but I remember disliking the different look, and worst of all, the rather boring and repetitive environment.  THere wasnt as much variety.  It wasnt very memorable and I dont remember the bosses being that cool either.  Kraid, Ridley and more are so awesome and unique.  Not to mention SUper MEtroid has the greatest ending ever :P.

Super Metroid. It ain't even worth debating. The game is flawless and is the best game Nintendo's ever crafted, not Ocarina of Time. Super Metroid is the best 16-bit game of all time. Nuff said.

Super Metroid, followed by Metroid Zero Mission.

Super Metroid is probably the best game ever created, not only the best 2D Metroid.

More diversity, better gameplay mechanics, better level design, perfected formula.

Let's say that Super Metroid is the best "classic" Metroid while Fusion is the best "semi-modern" Metroid and call it a day.

I haven't played Zero Mission or Super Metroid but out of the three I've played, here's how I rank them (best to worst):

Metroid Fusion

Metroid II

Metroid

Metroid II and Metroid are really similar but Metroid II nudges out Metroid because it has a cartridge save rather than passwords and also I feel like it gives you a better idea of what you're supposed to be doing w/o sacrificing the desolate atmosphere. All of them take a bastard ton of adventuring or aimless wandering depending how you look at it (or cheating and looking up maps, which I am not above).

Metroid Fusion I like the best because it has a bit more of a story to it. That's what a lot of fans of the series don't like about it but for me, it made me finally give a crap about Samus and it was only after playing Fusion that I even wanted to go back to the first two.

My post may be 2 years old but my mind is still the same! Super with the slight nod over the GBA remake.

Fusion is in the middle

Nes metroid here

GB metroid here.

Played all of them and enjoyed all of them, but I have to put them in order. This is what it would be.

You thought the level design was better? I thought it was more linear, which is bad for a Metroid game. Not saying it's a bad game, though. It's a fantastic game. But I felt the game design (because you can't call it levels in Super Metroid's open-world) was much better than Metroid: Fusion's level design.

Metroid: Fusion had a better story going on, though.

Fusion was more focused and action-packed, imo.

Super Metroid, at times, felt a little boring to me.

But that was not the case in Fusion for me which always kept a steady pacing.
