Why include Distant Worlds? They play music but they don't create it.

Wow Xenogears is number 4!? I would never in a million years think that any list would have Xenogears' OST as high as that. You guys know I'm so happy for this.

Edit.
OMG! I just realized the CREID album is number 6. Finally, people realize that this game is the best, or at least close to the best.

Edit 2.
My personal favorites if you guys care to hear.

It has to do with the fact that the list is complied from album releases, and Western game soundtracks, especially older ones, simply didn't have as much album releases derived from them as Japanese soundtracks, which unfortunately skews the list to a very Japanese direction.

Still, it also saddens me when people don't recognize great contributions western composers put in towards games and their soundtracks simply because you can't buy a CD of it. It really, really saddens me. From what I can tell, there's exactly ONE western soundtrack in that entire list.

Furthermore, this list seems to be based on votes from a forum community (hence the points), so there's really no special criteria or whatever - it's basically just a popularity contest from the album's standpoint, which is fine, but I'm merely framing this list for what it is.

Predictably, this "top #" list omits an obvious entry and is thus a failure on the part of its author(s). In this case, I am referring to the lack of Guilty Gear. I'll admit that the list-maker(s) surpassed my expectations by including two of them, but neither of those are Isuka or XX #Reload.

For the restrictions it has, and the likely Japanese bias that the members of that website have, it's a pretty good list, yeah. I would've liked to have seen entries like The Dig, Arcanum, ANY of the Dragon Quest Symphonic Suites or the String Quartet album (which is one of the best arrangement albums I own), Grim Fandango/Psychonauts, and a number of other soundtracks..but again, this list was mainly a popularity contest, from the looks of it.

I think that VII was overall one of the weaker soundtracks in the series. It has two of the all time great songs "Aeris Theme" and "One Winged Angel". The sound quality wasn't good for the system and it used to much synth (although it did fit the game). VI is definately the best one, although I love FFX's as well (the vote was split between regular and piano versions so it looked less popular than it really is). VI had "Aria Di Mezzo Carattere" (one of the, if not the greatest, musical pieces in gaming), "Terra's Theme" and its variations, "Forever Rachel", the incredible epic "Dancing Mad" and "Ending Theme", the adventurous "Searching For Friends", the tense "Fierce Battle", the folky "Shadow's Theme" and "Relm's Theme"....and more. I find the town theme "Kids Run Through the City" amazing and I love the song thats played in the pubs. The strength of VI's soundtrack is how it enhances the game and fits the scenes. For example, Celes's suicide attempt is made a lot more moving by "Celes Theme" being played. Xenogears has a great soundtrack....and I haven't even played the games...lol. Just listen to them on youtube.

I'm glad, and not surprised, that Final fantasy games are high on that list. I'm also not surprised and I am pleased to see Megaman on the list. megaman 2, 3, and Megaman X have some awesome tunes

It's nice to see Tales of Legendia on that list, that game had some great music in it.

Overall, it is a pretty good list.

I agree that VI had a wonderful soundtrack, but VII just resonated with me more. The cheery lightness of Yuffie's theme, the dark vocals of One Winged Angel, and Cosmo Canyon, which is unlike any song I've ever heard in a videogame, yet still manages to be catchy. And Celes's suicide had great music to go along with it, but Aeris's death had her own theme which greatly enhanced the moment as well. They both do a great job of enhancing the scene, and neither is better than the other. That's when it all comes down to what you personally enjoyed more, and for me, it was VII.

Aeris's Theme sounds just like Celes's Theme (which is actually a leitmoif of Aria Di Mezzo Carattere) and I think it was inspired by that theme, as both Celes and Aeris were tragic characters in their games. But whats seperates VI from other soundtracks was its ambition. There was a whole opera scene....which is still acted, sung, and performed today. Uetmasu actually finished the opera (since in the game the show was crashed). Then you have "Dancing Mad" with over 16 minutes long and in 4 parts, all with organ. "One Wing Angel" while great, can't compare to the scope and ambition of "Dancing Mad". This is why this soundtrack is at #1 by a mile.

Most of these games do deserve to be in the list.....JRPGs usually have great soundtracks and many older games from Japan have great soundtracks too. It is only recently that western games have good soundtacks although there are some good ones in the past. They can't compare to the influence and popularity of Japanese games though, the 90's were dominated by Japanese made games. Also these are by soundtrack releases as albums, not for games with the best soundtracks.

I'm not saying that these games don't deserve to be recognized for their music. I'm saying that there's a blatant bias in play here on the list, and that's a fact. There are many western games that had great soundtracks from the 90's and 80's. Most of them we don't know of in the US, though, because they were more localized on home computer systems like the Atari ST, Commodore 64, Spectrum, and so forth, which weren't as popular in the US as the home consoles like the NES. And in fact, PC game soundtracks from the 90's were exceedingly influential on future game soundtracks, as they paved the way for using live music, advancements in MIDI soundcard standardization on the computer platforms (IIRC), complex adaptive/interactive music, and other standards.

The 90's were dominated by Japanese games only if you look at consoles.

The fact that the list was based on number of votes simply reiterates my stance that this list was, at least to a notable degree, a popularity contest of soundtracks.

I do agree that makers of PC games revolutionized the advancements in game soundtracks, but the Japanese mastered using the available technology to the maximum effect as well as using the composition to great effect. Look at Aria Di Mezzo Cattere from Final Fantasy VI. It sounded limited today, even the voices were "synthed", but as a compostion, it is one of the all time greatest and covers of the piece sound outstanding, especially because it can be sung. While I think west did more with soundtrack technology, japanese games had better soundtracks. But I do think more western games should have been on the list.

Aria DI Mezzo Cattere is a fine piece, and one of Uematsu's overall strongest works, my assertion about the bias of this list still stands, and it's none the less upsetting. I mean, what about the contributions and works of Tommy Tallarico, George Sanger(The Fat Man), Michael Land, Michael Giacchino, Peter McConnell, Clint Bajakian, Inon Zur, Jeremy Soule, Chris Huelsbeck, Chris Abbott, Alexander Brandon, Rod Hubbard, Bobby Prince, and countless others? Furthermore, a lot of soundtracks by these guys actually had album releases, even during the early 90's.

Again, I'm not saying that the albums on the top 100 list aren't good. I'm simply asserting that I can't take the list that seriously due to the circumstances of how it was set up, and the bias that is very present in the list.

Only problem is that everyone that voted has never played every game, so this isn't really a good depiction of what games actually have the best soundtracks. Just which games are most popular, and therefore have the most recognized "great" soundtrack

Western games did get votes, including Halo 3...but they were either voted only once or twice, or voted on the bottom of the lists. I see Heroes of Might and Magic soundtracks being voted on, there is a Bioshock vote....etc. But you can't deny that there aren't excellent soundtracks on this list and I think many on the top 20 indeed deserve to be there, with the #1 soundtrack well deserving of its position.

Originally they were going to list 500 greatest albums....

There are a lot of soundtracks that'd deserve to be in the top 20 (I'd say at least 50-100 soundtracks could, for me). Heck, Bioshock is such a game, IMHO. FFVI is a great album to be there as well, but honestly since we're talking about albums, I almost would've rather seen Grand Finale at number one instead of the OST, but that's me. The fact that 99 out of the top 100 choices were all Japanese derived games is still telling of the type of mentality the voters were having, regardless of how the other 400 panned out.

I'm glad to see that the Wild Arms soundtrack is on the list, but I can't believe that I can't find Eternal Sonata up there. Eternal Sonata, in my opinion, has some of the best compositions I've ever heard (especially Leap the Precipice), and as a musician, these compositions are the type of pieces I could only hope to one day be able to create myself.
