I think it was the introduction of Shadow the Hedgehog.

Sonic Adventure 2 was the start of the downfall with Shadow being the poster child of everything that went wrong with the series. I'm so glad those dark and miserable times are over, and hopefully it stays that way.

Sonic Adventure was an interesting but flawed game that came out to showcase the power of the Dreamcast without actually giving us a decent game. I feel like the DC games and forward have been a steady decline for Sonic. Recently, Sega has realized the error of it's ways and has made an effort to change Sonic for the better, but at this point it's too little too late.

We'll see what happens, but with news of Sega's problems, I really can't see them coming back unless they come out with a game that is both a critical and commercial success that simultaneously returns Sonic to his original glory. At this point in time, I have my doubts that this will ever happen.

I really liked Heroes (on the GC, PS2 version was glitchy) In fact it was the last good game they made before Generations imo. Sonic 06 was the real start of the downfall, one of the worst games ever.

I really enjoyed Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Sonic Heroes (all on the Gamecube for me) was fun but I didn't enjoy it as much, for me it was also the start of the decline for the series.

Sonic Adventure was when the rot set in. It was impressive in its time, but the terrible cutscenes, overly easy levels and tedious side missions involving the supporting characters have not dated well. I daresay Sonic Heroes was a better game.

Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island was the first poor mainline Sonic game, but I won't count it since that was Travellers' Tales who churned it out, not Sonic Team.

It was better than Sonic Adventure 2 imo. I enjoyed Heroes quite a bit, it's not near the best Sonic game but still it's pretty good. From then on Sonic 06, the Wii games, and Unleashed were terrible. At least Sonic started getting good again with Colors and Generations. And Sonic 4 part 2 looks to be fixing most of what was wrong with the first one so looking forward to that.

I can agree with this at least the series is picking up steam again after the great Colours and Generations.

It's really not, it;s a nostalgia escape plan that seems to be working. I Think Sonic died as soon as they started having exclusive features and titles on Nintendo systems. That's when Sonic stopped trying to be the "Cool game toplay" and became a game trying to either aim for Marios crowd, or the GTA, JAK2-3. R&C crowd. His populatrity dropped really fast. But not as fast thatn Spyro, I don;t think any game series in history had almost died with one game without an actual decline. Thus proving the first few Spyro games were very fragile if one game almost broke the series.

As soon as sonic entered the 3rd dimension, things took a turn for the worst.

Like Castlevania, Sonic works best in 2D

This. All 3D games tbh. Generations is a step in the right direction tho.

to some extent thats true, though I think SA and SA2 are very good games, I still prefer the 2D ones (or the 2.5D ones)

I very much enjoyed the Sonic Adventure Games. I can agree that things started going downhill with Heroes. I bought the game for a cheap price on sale, but quickly lost interest in it.

Sonic 3 was, imo. It was then that the games fundamentals changed.

Really the Sonic series should have stayed as a two dimensional series and not three dimensional, as the loss of speed in 3D games and different mechanics is likely to disorient players used to the simpler 2D Sonic series

That's one of the reasons why I'm glad since Unleashed that the newer games incorporate 2D elements. The loss of speed though I think has been finally ironed out, especially via boosting. Now disorientation comes from going too fast, but once you get good, you can really blaze through those 3D sections.
