Question for Mr. Darkman - do you think Saturn could handle SF3?

As in, not Alpha 3 but the real SF3.

I read the arcade version runs on what seems to be a single SH2 CPU and Saturn had two of those (even the 32X did actually).

nameless12345

no, I mean alpha. the game that came out in 99, for all the systems I think, also saturn

SF3 would be possible, the main issue is RAM , the 4MB carts were good enough for the CPS2 games, CPS3 games obviously used more RAM , so while it could work , you would have to cut out frames of animation, introduce longer loading, etc. ie, it would run it, just not a perfect port (good port though) and the reason the Saturn needs the extra CPU is mainly for 3D calculations, since the CPS3 is a 2D only machine, 1 CPU is enough.

Maybe if they used a bigger memory expansion?

It's interesting how both, the N64 and Saturn used memory expansions (N64 for 3D games and Saturn for 2D games).

Perhaps they could even provide a 3D accelerator addon which would boost 3D performance and 3D graphics quality on the machine dramatically.

But it would likely be too expensive to do so and split the already small userbase (think 32X).

And for just that one, two games (VF3 and Shenmue for example), it wouldn't be really worth it tbh.

most of that sounds like dream talk , especially the 3D acceleator. higher memory is kind of the same, it would increase the price of the game, and unless they had a good reason to use them on a few games, there is no point. unless I suppose they decided to use some sort of a ROM cartridge like KOF95

I read somewhere that Street Fighter 3 was in development for 64DD but got canned because the 64DD got canned.

It's probably just rumours tho, but would have been interesting to see how the 64 would handle a 2D game with such heavy animations.

That was due to delays though, I believe. It offered a lot of possibilities.

at the end of the day , it was only 64MB per disc , so really youve seen what it can offer if youve played Resident Evil 2 on the N64 (where the cart was 64MB)

I disagree. Who is to say the disc sized couldn't be increased? And in tandem with a cart? There was more to it than just disc size.

were there any games that used multiple discs? using it in tandem with a cartridge won't help much , kind of negets the whole point.

Fzero? The peripheral was a very interesting concept, especially for the time.

F-Zero X got an 64DD expansion disc called "F-Zero X Expansion Kit" and featured a track editor and create-a-car feature (I think).

If Nintendo ever did a remake for the 3DS, it would be cool if they included that...

Don't forget about Xmen Children of the Atom! I love that fighting game and it's still one of my favorite games period. I wish there were some more unlockable characters though.

I sadly haven't played Children of the Atom on the Saturn, I did play it in the arcade, and honestly I would just say people should go for the Saturn Vs games, imo they are the perfect balance between the slower SFA games (which XCOTA is based on) , and the insanity of the later games. ie, they are actually fast while still not feeling like they are under control.

Indeed. I'm planning on adding Marvel Superheroes for the Saturn to my collection next week and I'm grabbing the arcade stick as well. I've been using that controller that came with the Nights game for my fighting games! LOL

if youre going for an arcade stick , I recommend the Hori arcade stick, I had the official Sega one, and while it was good, the Hori one is better in most ways segaretro.org/images/9/97/Saturn_HSS-07.jpg thats the one, its a goomd middle ground between price and quality.

great game, but graphically surpassed by a number of other 2d fighters. also gameplay wise. x-men vs streetfighter I think is the best 2d fighting game I may have ever played.

VF2 on the Saturn was impressive for the time and for the limitations of the console (the PC port is based on the Saturn version too) but it still didn't hold a candle to the real deal:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rrje0yVPlJY

And speaking of Virtua Fighter, how come Sega still hasn't released a VF Collection featuring arcade-perfect ports of the first four VFs?

I'm pretty sure fans of the series would buy that.

bultje112

lol you again and your "facts" I doubt you ever played virtua fighter 2 in an arcade. yes it looks better than the saturn version. but definitley not a lot. backgrounds were better quite a bit, but saying it didn't hold a candle to the real deal. lol

You don't have to play the arcade version to know that the arcade version looked much better than the saturn port. It's not miles better but still.

in defense of the Saturn version , it does have the higher resolution, as well as better music (it has a choice for both the original arcade music, and arranged music) due to the CD and all that. everything else is worse though although at the time this was more or less the norm.

Well someone else who played fighting games back to back. I did that with Mortal Kombat 1,2,3 on the Super Nintendo, And Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance, Mortal Kombat Deception and Mortal Kombat Armaggedon on the Playstation 2.

I never played a Fighting Game on the Sega Saturn. The controller didn't look all that great for fighting games. I perfer a fight stick for fighting games. Then Snes Advantage and the Soul Caliber 2 fight Stick for PS2.

The Saturn did have Virtra fighter 1 and 2. I don't recall a decent Sega Saturn fight stick, or a arcade Joystick. But I'm sure that it did have them.

Glad to see that someone else has done the fighting game session back to back to back. This is something that I though no one else did. I didn't end up ever buying the Sega Saturn since the original Saturn controller didn't look all that comfortable. This was the very first controller that was included with the original Sega Saturn consoles way back in the May 1995 surprise launch.

The Sega Saturn was available Now! right after the very first E3 press conference. for $400.00. The first Saturn controller was quickly replaced with the more traditional Sega Genesis like 6 button control pad.

it looks better, but not a ton better as claimed by you and certain other idiots here

bultje112

you obviously never played the arcade version

I did and both back in the day. there's a reason why people in reviews write about their being mimimal differences. because they were.

people liked to say all sorts of things , they praised the quality of the conversion , and it was indeed a very good conversion for a 1995 fighting game. the differences are a bit more than minimal though.

in what ways is the arcade so much better then? I've kept asking that. the backgrounds are a lot better. I agree with that. but that is about it.

I think Last Bronx is the best looking 3D fighter on the Saturn.

don't know if its the best looking, but it is a good looking game, only problem is the flicker. I still think DOA is the best looking fighter on the system, Zero Divide is also pretty decent , and Savaki does some interesting things.

Savaki is also interesting, but its kind of mixed bag , on the one hand it does some really interesting things in regards to the effects, but on the other some of the character models were average at best.

I just searched youtube for those 2 other games, and I'm more impressed with Zero Divide than Savaki.

The thing that many don't know to point the finger at but know it looks much better is "bilinar texture filtering", i.e. the same thing N64 could do and made the textures look smooth up close (opposed to pixely like on Sega Saturn and PSX).

Of course, it also helped that it had 3D backgrounds and better character models (plus some extra special effects).

triple facepalm for anyone seriously claiming to use youtube to compare graphics. I thougth stupidity had reached its peak. but I guess not.

Everyone with a pair of eyeballs (no, just one) can see that the arcade version looks better...

Yeah but most people don't wanna buy a arcade cabinet. :)

Can't find a good shot of the arcade version but here's the Saturn vs PC version (D3D):

36853-virtua-fighter-2-sega-saturn-scree

69093-virtua-fighter-2-windows-screensho

Note that the arcade version looks better than the PC version.

don't know about the game looking totally differrent , but those pictures you posted are of a poor quality and the game does look better than that , especially with a good cable. heck , even my old capture device did a better job.

and these were taken with a composite output (simply because this capture card didn't have RGB) , the game looks quite a bit better (at least the colours and sharpness) with S-video or RGB.
