I have a 10 year old daughter who loves gaming and seems to favor rpg's more of lately. She likes to play games that have a playable female heroine (doesn't have to be the main character), which I personally dig, but a quick search on the interwebz for "rpgs for girls" gives me either pink-foofoo-starwberry-candy land-diabetic-super-girly games or the Otaku master work of fan service games.

Any advice from the community on this?

Trails in the Sky: First Chapter (PSP/PC) comes to mind straight away when I think of RPGs fronted by heroines.

it depens if she likes jrpgs or wrpgs, since you can create your own character in most of the wrpg games, main character doesnt matter for those

@humanistpotato: She like both. If the jrpg has a good character and story to follow, she's all-in. If the wrpg character customization is deep and has a good/ fun story as well, she seems to prefer that more.

Couldn't she just play any good RPG that she likes? They aren't really misogenic, and there shouldn't need to be pretty colours for her to like it if you are about gender equality.

@kaealy: She could, but since she is 10 year old, I find it to be my parental duty to monitor the games she plays. It's not about gender equality but more about being able to also enjoy the adventure of a female lead. She doesn't mind playing the male characters, she just prefers the girls. This is my observation (just watching here switch out all the guy characters to female characters on final fantasy X). But since I'm no expert, I'm open to game advice for her. So far I think Ni no Kuni, FFX, and Trails in the Sky: First Chapter look good for her. I'm still think Skyrim might be to advance for her age.

Sounds like she'd like the entire Final Fantasy 13 trilogy of games. Look into the Tales of Graces F, Tales of Xillia 1 & 2.. and maybe Eternal Sonata also. Also there's this fairly short indie 2D JRPG made by Ubisoft called Child of Light where you can play as a female hero.

These are great! I'll definitely put them on the list. Eternal Sonata is 2 player, right? 'Cause if yes, that will be some cool father/ daughter bonding time right there!

It kinda sucks, but Final Fantasy XIII had a female lead.

Also Eternal Sonata seems appropriate.

YS origin! its simple, fun and challenging ARPG.. though the unskippable text is annoying rest of the same is much like original 2d zelda games..

And really i don't believe that there's are gender specific games, just games for adults and kids.

Final Fantasy XIII has a female lead, but it is also pretty balls. The characters are balls, the plot is pretty balls, the combat is pretty balls. It looks nice, but is balls.

Eternal Sonata on the other hand is charming and actually quite engaging (narrative, gameplay, characters etc).

I would recommend Ni No Kuni and Eternal Sonata

yeah there is a separation between age but there are a lot of jrpg games who's visuals cater to the male persuasion. Because I'm no true expert I get fooled into thinking it is ok

Example 1:

But a little more research:

Gotsa to be on my toes or else I have a lot of explaining to do lol

Final Fantasy 9 or 10 maybe? Those games are pretty timeless, there is also the HD version of 10 so it looks prettier. 9 was just an amazing game and less gritty than the previous entries in the series.

Recettear was a lot of fun. Run an item shop, decorate it, chat with customers. Then go dungeon diving for cool things to sell.

Ni No Kuni as others have said may be a good one to check out.

Any JRPG that's been critically acclaimed should do. Have her check out Final Fantasy VI if you can get a copy. There isn't any real main character but if you had to choose one, it would be one of the females. And she's a good character.

@DaX_Factor: ur girl is 10 OK well fine long story short you as well as I know she should not play online gg.

Now list of Korean/Asian MMOs that don't refer to pomf yes look up that meme because in a nutshell that is what virtually every sick Asian MMO is filled with even the PG ones lolicon crap everywhere:

  1. Elsword (best bet game is a gold sink tho)
  2. Phantasy Star Online (wait or join JP servers American community exists)
  3. Dungeon Fighters Online (great just join the CN servers NA community over there)
  4. Vindictus (Game too easy imo friendly community + not much titilization)
  5. Black Dessert (not out yet)
  6. Aura Kingdom (Point n click not my cup of tea)
  7. DCUO online (Subscription)
  8. Marvel Heroes (revamp good)

If your girl has immune to the obv. trolls in MMOs then:

  1. TERA (boring, but good for what it is)
  2. Guild Wars 2
  3. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

MMO community is garbage and deserves the bad rap it gets so stay away from them especially if shes 10 better yet just stay away from MMOs altogether or online games.

Just the way it is, stick to handhelds and Nintendo till she develops nerves of steel.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the Rune Factory games yet. 4 (3DS) and Tides of Destiny (Wii, PS3) both let you play as women (though not at the start for ToD). Both are like RPGized Harvest moon games, and put a big emphasis on interacting with the residents of the towns. I've heard 4 is particularly good.

@BranKetra: PC, 3DS, PSVita, Wii, had a PS3 but it was stolen and I haven't replaced it yet. Some of the recommendations can lead me to purchase a particular system, that's why I didn't really put a specific system. Plus I feel a non system specific thread like this can benefit more people than just my family. But with that said, any game in those systems that you can vouch for, my pocket is more ready to listen to.

@DaX_Factor:

Being stolen from is not fun.

The 3DS has a great library of role-playing games. Not only are 3DS-specific games available, but the entire DS library is also accessible.

To name a few:

  • Mario and Luigi: Dream Team
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Kingdom Hearts
  • Zelda
  • The World Ends With You

PC:

  • Septerra Core

In that case, you might want to try the Final Fantasy games, which usually have likeable female playable characters as well as large female fanbases. Each of the FF games are very different though, so just try out a few different ones until one clicks with her. The FF games released between 6 and 10 are usually regarded as the best ones.

@behardy24: prob cuz thats too hard, but yeah a good forgotten game

10yr olds don't know what 123476 * 34 / 100 is so I doubt they'll be interested in any game other than hack n slash or Pokemon. Any game that requires strategy is irrelevant in their minds hence the overwhelming population of them on arcade 1st person shooters.
