So, I had the misfortune of sitting through a broadcast of Resident Evil 7. While I enjoyed the time with my friend I immediately felt annoyed at how horribly NOT Resident Evil, Resident Evil 7 actually is. The story was confusing and hokie, with hokie farmer-like red neck enemies. The puzzles were weak and uninteresting. The entire thing takes place in a an ugly crummy garbage dump of a house. ONE LOCATION! BOOO! So as if the forced first person wasn't stupid enough, what with seeing only his gun and hand bouncing around, and being unable to get a grip on depth perception with the extremely unrealistic first person view, I had to survive the lack of any connection what so ever to Resident Evil's previous titles. No co-op play, no online modes, no use for ps plus once again. FACE PALM! Terrible. In every way possible, except graphics. If you didn't tell me the title was RE7 I would have guessed it was Outlast 3. This game is literally the death of Resident Evil. I feel like I need to go back and give ORC a better score because it is now my second least favorite Re titled after Re7. So this game is basically a hybrid of Outlast and Silent Hill but not in a good way. Capcom clearly can't figure out the formula to it's own franchise and clearly would rather use what it thinks are "popular" formulas" of game-play like when it turned RE into COD with ORC. BLAH. Capcom please don't make any other games ever again. Please sell me the rights to RE so I can make a game the fans actually want. If you are a real RE fan do NOT buy this game.

ORC was mainly developed by Slant Six Games. So you cant put all the blame on capcom for that game.

I havent had a chance to finish RE7 yet but to me it feels more like Resident Evil then 4,5, &, 6 did.

Bull, poppycock!! I've been a fan of Resident Evil since ps1 and I loved my time with Resident Evil 7! Still has weapons, monsters and scares of the like, it's just in 1st person now.

Im looking foward to the remake of RE2. To this day i still feel RE2 is the best one of the franchise. If they mess up the remake then it would be the death of RE.

I rented it last weekend and I agree. This did not feel like a Resident Evil game. It felt more like one of those indie horror walking sim games from the past few years that Youtubers like to make reaction videos of themselves playing.

There has not been a great Resident Evil game since Resident Evil 4 over a decade ago. My last hope is the upcoming Resident Evil 2 remake. If that disappoints as well then the Resident Evil franchise is dead to me.

@killered3: Ok you get fun points for saying "poppycock" other than that it wasn't about fun for me, it was about how it is clearly not an RE title. Yes it has weapons but 1st person doesn't work for RE. It didn't work in RE Outbreak, and it doesn't work now, but at least in Outbreak you had clear connections to RE lore and puzzles. This has no resemblance to RE. If I like ORC more than this, that means it horrible.

@mikeboss3: Oh I don't, I hated ORC, almost hated RE6 as much as ORC and I really hate this one. I was excited when Capcom promised a nostalgic experience but after I saw the demo I knew it was no good. Being as I tried to give it a fair shot just in case, I am really disappointed now with the real version. It's simply not RE

@mikeboss3: Yes I made an error with calling it third person. I have since edited it to say first person. I don't think people should buy it at full-price to try it. I suggest watching a broadcast first or waiting till it gets cheaper. A true fan won't play a game that insults the franchise ;) Ok maybe I will but I won't like it lol.

@arcangelgold:

I disagree though, the puzzles were very Resident Evil-ish. Finding color key cards, oddly shaped keys that open locked doors with weird symbols. It felt closer to Resident Evil 1 though, there's not enough ammo to go around.

I'm starting to notice that the only people who says it doesn't "feel" like Resident Evil have either 1. Only watched "other's" play it, 2. Only played the demo, or 3. Never made it very far past the "bull" doors (right after dinner) to where the game opens up.

Everyone else who's actually played the game for a stretch for the most part agree's that it feels very much like Resident Evil, but in first person.

There's TONS of connections to the original franchise (starting with a painting right outside the aforementioned "bull" door) and there are tons of variety in the environments. You failed to give the game a fair shake and you came to the boards to start a thread with a premise full of unsubstantiated poppycock OP. If you're not trolling then you simply failed at giving the game a fair and objective review.

For your sake OP, I hope you're merely trolling because if your sense of observation and reasoning are really this bad...*shudder*

@zombieproof: lol trolling is an overused word that I think at this point has literally lost it's meaning. The game got more of a fair shake than it deserved. It has nothing to do with RE. Nothing at all. didn't look like one, didn't act like one, didn't sound like one. I couldn't possibly subject myself to anymore of it and pay for the torture of playing it anymore at this point. Also I think it's high time demos were actual game play of a game but it clearly showed enough to know this was just a clone of Outlast pretending to be Resident Evil, with a few guns.

@killered3: The puzzles were weak and frankly didn't fit the atmosphere at all. An expensive antique looking puzzle opens a door to.... a friken trailor. Ugh.

There is more than the house ... you go to the bayou, a salt mine and a military boat ...

Resident Evil changed formula after Code Veronica for a more action style for 4-5 and 6 then they try something new with 7.

I felt like they did pay homage to old RE in a way during the game

The Father that chase you in the house until the ultimate fight agains him just like in RE2 and RE3, the monster that chase you and could fight you at the worst time ever ... The complex is completely destroyed at the end when they flight in a helicopter just like in the first one. Few guns like in the original trilogy with bad puzzle ... The escort you had to do if you choose Mia just like in RE2 with the little girl when you play Claire or Ada Wong if you play Christ ...

Also the game is freaking terrifying in the beggining just like it was very scary in the original as a young teen in 1996.

@zombieproof:

That's what I get too. I understand that some people just wouldn't like the shift to fps but to say that it's not Resident Evil worthy just feels ridiculous. Unless you just hate the actual premise of the game but you can't deny the similarities right in front of you. I can honestly say that I'm happier with this makeover than the Tomb Raider's because it's much less drastic of a change. I can handle the fps part.

What makes you think it has to be? the title of the game is just a name. If you don't like it then sell it, instead you are selling an idea. The idea that it's a bad game which is still just your opinion that not everyone will share. How about we just pretend the game is called Scary house simulator?..do you feel better yet?

So your going from post to post here repeating yourself over and over. Who are you trying to convince? Because everyone that has played it has their own opinion of it anyway so either they share it to some degree or don't. How many more times are you going to tell us that it's not RE? lol

@arcangelgold: Oh. . Wow. . You have an overly-negative opinion after watching a play session. . . Join the list of people who watch games instead of playing them_

I'm a long time fan of Resident Evil/ Biohazard. Favorite in the series is probably the Remake which I've completed countless times, usually in Forest/ Real Survivor mode.

And don't get the whiny fanbase. I've liked most of the games (even liked parts of 6) and thought 7 was a good game, very good game in fact.

I just didn't like the perspective because it only hindered the experience. Narrow corridors do not work in First Person. I'd have liked a NG+ mode called 'Classic' or something that had a Resi 4 camera, but apparently Capcom was being stubborn for the VR gaming crowd. Real shame.

Eitherway it's still in the top 5 for me

  1. Remake
  2. Resident Evil 4
  3. Resident Evil: Nemesis
  4. The Evil Within (It's a Resi, face-it)
  5. Resident Evil 7

I'm very excited for the Resi 2 remake and think it has a chance of being really good based on what 7 achieved, but don't make it in FP Capcom, that would be a terrible move.

it does feel different to me but obviously the tone, characters, delivery, setting etc and camera change are different so it's to be expected. it still nods to the earlier games. but i don't think the new spin on the game style is a bad thing. in fact it's the first time a game in the series has really got me. i wasn't prepared for that first hour lol. it's taught me an important life lesson in that if my fiancé ever goes missing and three years later i get a sudden video message from her out of the blue from some abandoned derelict house in the middle of nowhere telling me to stay away... i'll take that advice

SPOILERS BELOW. I WARNED YOU

I understand why some are disappointed in re7 not being "re like", but come on. How many games can we possibly have with the same original characters doing the same thing! If Jill and chris showed up to another house with more zombies I'm sure they would just off the selves instead of going through the same repetitive story.

Re7 is different but puts us in the shoes of a normal everyday person and how we have to survive the horror. And THAT is survival horror. And the game still connects to the RE world in some way, and well hopefully find out who "redfield"is soon

@RSM-HQ: I only played RE 5 (full game), RE 6 & Revelations demo. I'm not an long time Resident Evil fan like everybody else. As for RE 7, I didn't know what to expect from that game. But, it was an great game (lack of variety of enemies & first person view didn't put an damper on my experience playing it) & I'll buy it when the price drops later on this year.

@BigCat2K20: It's more like the older games to be honest. Isolated, cramped, and low on supplies. Making you really think about what you use and when. That's what the franchise was all about before the later games.

As for waiting. I'm that way with Nioh, luckily I've been playing it at a friends. Unlike Resi7 which seems to have all the important content in the game; for Nioh I just don't trust Team Ninja. Sure, they pulled it off and made a fantastic game. But they have a habit for releasing a far better version soon after its original release. That will ultimately not be part of a DLC package.

Resi 7 will only be adding mini tape DLCs according to Capcom, and from what I've already done, they have little impact on the release product. In fact, are pretty boring to play so far.

@RSM-HQ: I might try out older Resident Evil games in the future. I heard nothing but positive things about Nioh. As for Team Ninja re-releasing their games, that's why I don't buy video games like in the past & stick to renting. It seems that gaming companies have a habit of re-releasing their games (Capcom, EA, Ubisoft & others). I don't blame you for not trusting Team Ninja.

Sounds like some segments of the game actually reminded you of the older titles. Hell, if a game demo is not indication enough of what's to come, then what's the point? I played the full thing and even tough some segments throw some nostalgia your way every once in a while, this did not feel like a Resident Evil game proper, at all.

Not to say this is not a great game, and hints at fantastic games to come under this format, but let's be honest. Resident Evil as you and i knew it is gone.

Being not like RE games is a good thing in my opinion (which is just a valid as yours) those old games played like crap and just wouldn't cut it today. RE can be whatever Capcom decide at the end of the day.

No, this is more Resident Evil than any reboot I've ever seen being close to it's original version. If you think this marks Resident Evil as we remember being dead then you haven't played shit of any fucked up reboot. I've played some really OFF reboots and this doesn't come close.

It's who you think it is. It even mentions it with clear reference to first name (can't remember if it is a passing comment made by Ethan or a voice credit, but it DEFINITELY tells you as I remember being unsure as well and then getting clear confirmation).

Back on topic: This game is the most RE an RE game has been since Zero. We have a return to a typical RE-style setting with progression from a house to a research (type) facility, limited supplies/inventory, and although RE7 has no puzzles (more like rudimentary matching exercises that are more obstacle than puzzle) the progressing-gating obstacles it presents are thematically very similar to old RE games.

What exactly is lost in the first-person view? Nothing. In fact it restores the tension of the limited view afforded by fixed camera angles, only without terrible controls and the inability to see what you character can. The game hasn't somehow changed for being first-person.

@killered3: It is beside the point that you think this feels more like the original titles than any other sequels in the past. Just imagine playing this thing without the series name attached to it.

You would never make a connection. Get real. By your account, Outlast (2013) is also a fantastic Resident Evil title.

Problem with that logic.

Outlast has no weapons.

Resident Evil 7 has weapons.

Outlast has crazy people to run away from.

Resident Evil 7 has viral infected hillbillies and monsters to kill.

Outlast has an uncovering the truth theme.

Resident Evil 7 has a search and rescue theme similar to games in the past.

What changes? The only real change is the fps perspective but it's not at all that different from what we've been doing before. It's just scary again. Making Resident Evil scary is definitely a step in the right direction.

@lucidique:

Resident Evil's additional modes like mercenaries weren't really series defining. It was just something to do once you beat the game.

It's always been:

Walk down corridors, shoot a zombie or 2. Find some files to read, cutscenes, go back to save room and dump items in item box. Find funny shaped keys, and solve puzzles. Not always in that order but those are the basics to ps1 Resident Evil games. This game has those things again, (except for zombies) how is that bad?

Resident Evil 1 and 2 didn't even have any other mode but the main story and nobody gave a shit then either. Why now? If you don't remember, it was originally meant to be survival horror, not survival action. Resident Evil 5 and 6 kinda sucked, anyway.

Resident Evil is my favorite video game series so I'm a huge fan of it. This is the most "Resident Evil" game in the series in a long time. Once you look past the first person perspective (which the original was going to be if they weren't limited by the hardware of the PS1), the game has over the top characters, silly puzzles that make no sense in a house, back tracking, the creepy atmosphere, shocking scares, video game mechanics like healing yourself with herbs and first aid, limited ammo, files everywhere that add to the narrative, and using several weapons to combat enemies. A lot of things I totally miss about RE and survival horror.

I was originally skeptical about the change, especially with Capcom's track record and the over abundance of first person walking simulators in the horror genre, but they pulled it off and now I'm excited about the future of the franchise.

I had to survive the lack of any connection what so ever to Resident Evil's previous titles. No co-op play, no online modes

Yeah, Resident Evil has always been known for co-op play and online modes.

Resident evil isnt about the co op modes or pvp, its about horror - which is exactly what RE7 is. RE7 went back to its roots, and from what i have heard, its more like the original resident evils than the last 3.
