why the jump to $60? you'd think they'd put more content in games but instead we actually pay for things that were supposed to be in games in the first place in the form of DLC. thoughts?

Games are among the cheapest in the history of the industry. N64 games cost upwards of $100 in the late 1990's. That didn't even account for inflation. Games cost a lot of money to make these days... and even though some games probably shouldn't cost $60, we could be a lot worse off (I remember an interview done with some developers saying they should be priced at $120 given how much work goes into making them, and how much content comes out, compared to a $10 movie which lasts 2 hours).

They can't sell it for $60 unless people are willing to pay for it. Fortunately, with all the competition in the download games market, you can still get new release games for $50 or less if you just shop around.

I would be perfectly fine with 6 hour games costing $30.

Yes and I also remember when some SNES games were were $100+. I paid $100 for Street Fighter II and $115 for Chrono Trigger which I felt were both worth it by the way. Nowadays games cost so much more to make then before so I think $60 is a pretty fair starting price.

This feels like a lie. I bought Chrono for $55 brand new. Not sure if you bought some form of weird second hand market?

I don't remember when games were $50. I remember when they were $70+. I paid $70 to $80 for a lot of N64 games on release, and I remember skipping Chrono Trigger because I couldn't afford the then $110 price tag.

Nope, no lie. I paid $115 for Chrono Trigger when it first came out and it was at a game specific store called Microplay. It was in Canadian funds so I'm not really sure what the value of our dollar was back then.

Try living in Australia, most retailers sell new releases for around $100, i think a major retailer is currently selling MW3 for $110, i just import from the UK for $50.

I remember paying $80 for SFII for the SNES. Honestly, when you consider how much the price of movies and other forms of entertainment have risen, then factor in inflation for the past 20-30 years, I'd say $60 for a videogame is a great deal.

Dude, ages ago my dad paid the equivalent of $100 to buy me Killer Instinct on the SNES and the aversage SNES game was 80 bucks That said, I think prices were more justified back then, since cartridges were expensive to produce. DVDs are super cheap to make, so games today should cost less than what they do

I also remember when gas was $1 a gallon. Back in the day a loaf of bread cost a couple cents ...inflation is a hell of a thing (something games have NOT kept up with BTW) Also, see this: [QUOTE="foxhound_fox"]Games are among the cheapest in the history of the industry. N64 games cost upwards of $100 in the late 1990's. That didn't even account for inflation. Games cost a lot of money to make these days... and even though some games probably shouldn't cost $60, we could be a lot worse off (I remember an interview done with some developers saying they should be priced at $120 given how much work goes into making them, and how much content comes out, compared to a $10 movie which lasts 2 hours).

games cost less than they did in the SNES era without inflation. games cost less than they did in the NES, PS1, PS2 era with inflation games cost more to make than ever ...so games actually cost more to make but cost people less to buy. I fail to see the issue from the consumer side. It sucks from the developer side though (hence so many going under and them sticking to 'what works'). On a side note: This 'problem' (selling for less, costing more to make) has caused developers to stick with what is safe/known sellers...which is actually killing the industry, but that is a different conversation

:P True in some cases, in others I have to wait for a price cut for it to be worth the money, but so far I don't have a single game that I regret paying for :)

I remember paying (well my parents lol) 100 bucks for SNES and N64 games. That's why I only had about half a dozen only - the rest i would just rent from a local video shop every weekend. I still have a copy of Yoshi's Island on SNES with a fat 99.95 sticker on it!

A 50 dollar game in 2000 is 65 dollars today, so games are pretty cheap. a 50 dollar game in 2005 is 58 dollars today. I dont see the problem. Especially considering how much the development costs have increased.

Most PC games are still $50.

XaosII

Same goes for Wii games. And handheld games are even cheaper.

Funny enough, I actually don't remember when they were that price. I've always remembered paying around £40 for games. You can blame piracy for that though.

I spent £50 (that's Sterling) on Resident Evil 2 in 1998, a small fortune for an eighteen year old schoolboy. Totally worth it of course.

Oh yeah, so did I. I was so upset so many never came over from Japan too. I was hoping that's what the VC on the Wii was gonna do but I gave up checking after back in 2008.

When I tell my fellow gamers from outside NH that, they get jealous. But then it's hard for me, because when I step out of New Hampshire and visit another area, that's when it all changes.

That's how much SF2 ran me on SNES. Phantasy Star 2 (I think it was part 2) ran me $99. Chrono Trigger was $60, and my first N64 game, Shadows of the Empire, was $80. Oh but hey I do remember a fifty dollar game from just the other day. Sonic Generations, pretty good too.

I remember when you got all game content the day you purchased the game. I miss the pre DLC era.
