@warmblur: Mechanically it was the best of the early games and was the Resi game that came up with the now commonly used 180 turn, walking up stairs manually and mixing gunpowder.
Also had a dodge mechanics and set-piece choices. Nemesis was also much like Jack Baker and Mr X in the new Remake, a heavy threat that was better avoided.
Mercenary mode was also pretty awesome.
Resident Evil 3 commonly gets pushed under for having a brief section reusing Resi2 assets really early into the game, though then on it has its own original areas. Also only has one campaign, unlike the previous two that offered overall more content.

Thanks for the info never knew Mercenary mode started with 3.
I actually skipped RE3 back in the day was it any good?
I actually started out with RE3, I skipped 1-2....I couldn't get with the mechanics! RE3 was slightly better, but it was the atmosphere that drove me and the main tyrant (nemesis)who was like the boogieman to me. I Tried going back and playing it few years ago but it definitely didn't age, that's why when Capcom officially announced that they where doing a RE2 remake, I figured RE3 wouldn't be that far behind...especially since it got decent reviews during that time.
