The Shin Megami Tensei games are your best bet. Start with the persona games, they're relatively easy for RPG's but still pose a challenge and have good stories and characters as well.

Xenosaga is one of the more underrated games. I had a lot of fun for the 11 hours I wasn't mad at the game. Just make sure you fight battles and don't run like I did.
