Hey, I was wondering if anyone could recommend me a good list of RPGs for the ps1/ps2 that I could keep an eye out for, I have played a lot of RPGs in the last 10 years or so, but I'm looking for something new, this is a list of ps1 and ps2 rpgs that I have played or own, there are probably a good few missing from the list that I am forgetting, because I am typing this while in work, but yes, if anyone can be bothered to read my list an recommend any good RPGs based on it, then I would really appreciate it.... thanks very much, hope everyone had a nice christmas!

Grandia (Haven't played yet)

Final Fantasy (2.5/5)

Final Fantasy II (3/5)

Final Fantasy III (3/5)

Final Fantasy IV (4/5)

Final Fantasy V (3.5/5)

Final Fantasy VI (5/5 amazing)

Final Fantasy VII (5/5 first RPG I ever played, and hard to top, but VI may have just trumped it)

Final Fantasy VIII (4.5/5 LOVED the junction system and the overall game, felt like it lost its way towards the end)

Final Fantasy IX (5/5 proper old school FF, enjoyed the hell out of this one, Kuja FTW)

Koudelka (Haven't played yet)

Legend of Dragoon (4.5/5, LOVED it)

Parasite Eve 2 (5/5, again, LOVED it)

Chrono Cross (Haven't played)

PS2:-

Final Fantasy X (4/5 started off slow, picked up towards the end)

Final Fantasy XII (3.5/5, good gameplay, but not a fan of the story)

Odin Sphere (3/5 wasn't such a fan of the levelling up system in this one)

Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria (3/5)

Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (4.5/5 very high encounter rate, but the story was immense)

Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 (4.5/5 same as above, mantra grid was a major upgrade from the one used in the first, brilliant conclusion)

Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call (Nocturne) (Haven't played)

Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army (3/5 liked it, but felt like a step back after playing Devil Saga)

Persona 3 (5/5 Loved this one)

Persona 4 (5/5 Loved this one too)

Dark Cloud (3/5 playing this one ATM, almost no plot progression to speak of so far, so slightly disappointed)

Dark Chronicle (haven't played properly yet)

Rogue Galaxy (4/5 very fun battle system and upgrading weapons is the most addictive thing ever)

Kingdom Hearts (5/5, absolutely brilliant)

Kingdom Hearts 2 (4/5 nowhere near as good as the first, and Billy Zane not providing the Ansem voice over was awful)

Makai Kingdom (haven't played yet)

Xenosaga 2 (haven't played yet, want to play the first one first but there is no PAL version)

Shadow Hearts: From the New World (3.5/5 got about two thirds of the way through, its good, but it's not gripping me)

Dragon Quest VIII (3/5 very traditional RPG, fun but there was something missing for me personally)

thanks again,

Tysonne

EDIT: added a few more RPGs I've played, can't believe I forgot FF7-9)

I'd say:

PS1...

Parasite Eve (since you only listed 2)

Final Fantasy Tactics

Xenogears

Tales of Destiny

PS2...

Xenosaga 1 and 3 (I have a feeling you will be disappointed by 2, I know I was)

Shadow Hearts 1 & 2 (since 3 was only listed)

Edit to add Disgaea 1 & 2

righto, I haven't played Disgaea, but I've had my eye on it for quite a while, its' hard to pick up tho, thats why i got Makai kingdom, cos I do like Nippon Ichi games, I also really want to play suikoden 3, but its' not available in PAL regions, which sucks the big fat one. One of the things that make an RPG for me is the story, I couldn't give a fig about graphics, the draw for me is an interesting narrative, which I'm told Disgaea has in spades. Are there any other RPGs with good, meaty stories that anyone can think of? thanks for the suggestions so far BTW

Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, and 10 were great. 7, 8, and 9 were on the PS1, 10 was the PS2.

Again, as in many RPG lists around here, I see mainly japanese and squaresoft styled RPGs being mentioned only. Many of these are great gaming experiences, but they aren't the only RPGs out there people. I'm glad to see Parasite Eve mentioned, though, a great blend of RPG & survival-horrorwith a great story and beautiful cutscenes.

I'd recommend the following for a more unique RPG experience:

PS1:

  • Brave Fencer Musashi - The only Zelda-like RPG released in North America on the PS1 that I know of. It doesn't dethrone Zelda, but it's a ton of fun to play.
  • Diablo - The great hack 'n slash RPG of it's gneeration, BY FAR!
  • King's Field 1 & 2 - An open-world real-time action RPG from a first-person perspective.
  • Legend of Legaia - An awesome 3D RPG with a unique battle-system that's a blast to experiment with.

PS2:

  • Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance - An incredible hack 'n slash RPG in the Diablo tradition, but with many more items, enemies, and locations. As well as much more impressive graphics. Rules are based on the Dungeons & Dragons table-top gaming rules.
  • Champions of Norrath - Much like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance in gameplay, but released a few years later. This enabled the game to allow better graphics, more challenging gameplay, more locations, and more weapons, enemies, and spells.
  • Drakan: The Ancient Gates - A great independent action-RPG where you alternate between riding a dragon in shooter areas, and exploring and battling in the traditional dungeon-crawler action RPG experience. Fully 3D, third-person gameplay set in real-time.
  • King's Field: The Ancient City - The 3rd installment in the first-person, open world,real-time action RPG series. This time with much more impressive graphics and a bigger world to explore.
  • God of WarI & II- Not a tradition RPG, but you become more powerful and gain new weapons and abilities as you go much like Zelda. But the action and grpahics are violont and brutal in presnetation leaving you floored at the end of the experience.
  • Rygar: The Legendary Adventure: God of War before there was a God of War. Not as brutal on the violence scale, but just as impressive graphically, and gameplay-wise. More emphasis on exploring than inGod of War on this one as well. Third-person action-RPG.
  • X-Men: Legends I & II -Plays like your basic Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance clone, but is based on Marvel Comics' X-Men and takes place within the Marvel Comics Universe. This gives it a very unique feel, look, characters, and storyline making it a very fresh RPG experience.

actually, I've played and loved most of those games, but they kind of blur the lines when it comes to picking a good RPG... I am probably one of the biggest God of War fans this side of the Atlantic, but I wouldn't class that as an RPG just like I wouldn't class Jak and Daxter as an RPG, sure, it has RPG elements but you could say that of any game that involves upgrading a character or a story driven experience.... I have a back catalogue of hundreds of PS2 games, including some real beauties like Psychonauts, the Sly Cooper series, Jak 1, 2 and 3, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and I'm pretty sure I've got the ones I class as the "cream of the crop" but I am a complete RPG nut, which is why I wanted to expand on my colection of good, solid RPGs..... Thanks for the input though, I'll definitely check out Brave Fencer Musashi, sounds like abarrel of fun in disc form....

Play the first Valkyrie Profile. It's for the PS1, and it was ported over to PSP.

You must also play SMT Nocturne.

Yes, I've played VP1 a few times, and I got about halfway throught VP2, but it wasn't that good, plus I could see the plot twist involving Hrist coming a mile off, which was slightly gutting, and as for Nocturne, I have that in the house, but haven't started playing it yet, I want to finish Dark Cloud first, I wante to ask, are the Tales series of RPGs any good, regarding story and the like? I'v eseen many around in shops, but haven't picked them up yet.....

Legend of Legaia (PS1) - This is my all time favorite RPG due to the the story, music, fighting system, etc. Its a shame to as this got lost in the hype of FF7 as it shared a rather close release date.

The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age (PS2)is an extremely overlooked RPG in my opinion. It's pretty simplistic and some parts of the plot will make you cringe, but it's a very worthwhile experience and it has a battle system very very very similar to Final Fantasy X. If you're a LotR fan in any way, I'd suggest picking it up. No others seem to spring to mind at the moment. :/

PS1- Xenogears! ahh I love that game : ) PS2- I've recently discovered the games from Gust Software/NIS: Atelier Iris series, Ar Tonelico Series, and Mana Khemia Series. They're good old fashioned 2d turn-based rpg's, but with really nice 2d graphics.
