Title emphasis added because I've noticed respondents to threads like this can't help but pick 10-20 games.

This is a tough one for me between a post-nuclear open world RPG, an updated Indiana Jones-esque third person adventure shooter, or a sandbox open world action adventure game set in the Wild West. Ultimately, the Wild West won.

Red Dead Redemption is a close to perfect game. Awesome story, great surprise ending, very well written characters especially the main protagonist (John Marston is one of the best written and acted characters I've ever seen in gaming; he got absolutely robbed when Neil Patrick Harris beat his voice actor at the Spike VGAs for best actor; Spike VGAs = epic monumentous fail), fun multiplayer, great DLC, no game breaking bugs (unlike the post-nuclear open world RPG), and a lengthy quality single player campaign (unlike those modern shooters out there).

So out of the ridiculous AAA, overfinanced, developer-bankrupting games of this generation, RDR is the best I've played so far.

Super Mario Galaxy 2, it was a joy to play from start to finish. It has improved over the first SMG in every way possible, has clever uses of motion controls, and top notch level design that challenges players enough that every time they die, it is because of human error.

I am absolutely loving MGS4.

I've had it since I got my PS3 almost 2 years ago and recently decided to fire it up. MGS and MGS3:Subsistence are two of my all timers, I believe this one will top that list.

That's because it's so hard to choose! I'll go for Metal Gear Solid 4 as well. It left such a great impression on me that after I finished it, I knew it was the best thing I'd ever experienced and it would take a lot for another game to make me feel the same way. So far, nothing else has.

Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown. Thus far it has only been released in arcades, but it shall come to consoles soon enough. Never has there been a more balanced, technical, and well-crafted 3D fighting game.

Picking from the console side? Gee. Tough choice between SMG2 and UC2. I know I'll kick myself later. But, it's SMG2.

Nier. No other game, besides Shadow of the Colossus, has sucked me in as deeply as this game is doing. MASSIVELY underrated gem.

Boy that's tough. I've only scratched the surface with Skyrim and U3 is still settling in my mind. Canceling those two games out leaves me with two others... I'll just settle in MGS4 for now.

Without a doubt Heavy Rain for me. A genre defining title, one that made me wish Interactive Drama's were steadily releasing as a main stay. It's astounding quality and attention to detail didn't hurt either.

It's a tight race for me between: Super Mario Galaxy(1), Red Dead Redemption, Batman Arkham City, and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

While Arkham City is still fresh in my mind, I think I had the most fun playing Red Dead Redemption.

Well, my most-played game of this generation is probably Minecraft, but a favorite would take me a while to choose.

Portal 1. I frickin love that game. I thought the idea and premise by the game was so cool and it was so much fun to play and figure out the puzzles. Portal 2 definitely improved on itself in every way possible, but going through the first game "thinking with portals" for the first time. Purely epic IMO.

Portal for me too. I've played a few games this gen that have become all-time favourites but there is something about Portal, how simple but god damn brilliant it is. Nothing like it for me.

Pac-Man Championship Edition DX

I know it seems crazy to pick this downloadable game over all the huge AAA titles through the generation but honestly, out of all of them I've played (and that's a lot) this is the one I keep picking up again. Always fun to play, and that's what's most important right?

Gotta go with Uncharted 2. It was really the first this game to combine ALL aspects of what a "next" gen game should be. Amazing visuals, uncompressed 7.1 sound, phenominal music, great writing, an interesting more adult theme, and most importantly FUN gameplay.

I wouldn't call it my overall favorite game this gen, but I absolutely loved Call of Duty 4. Shame the console population went down so much but its still very active on PC.

If Persona 4 counts as a game from this generation, then that game wins by far. A very fun and dynamic turn based battle system combined with so many social activities to do outside of the main story makes an almost perfect RPG. (You're social life in the game also affects how well you fight in battle.

Although the biggest flaw of the game is how it's game over when the main character dies. Even if your allies are still alive and have the ability to resurrect you with a spell or an item, the game is stubborn and says: "Nope, main character dead, game over. Go back to your last save point which was about 20 years ago."

But if Persona 4 doesn't count as a current generation game because it's a PS2 game, then I'd have to give the title to Tales of Vesperia for the 360. That game is the only reason I bought a 360.

I would venture to say it's damn near impossible to distill such a long and robust generation of quality titles into merely one definitive selection but had I to choose it would most certainly be Arkham City.

I loved Arkham Asylum but Arkham City took the concept to an entirely new level. Not only was the narrative excellent and supported with what may be the best voice cast in gaming history but the gameplay, presentation and overall execution of the final product was about as close to perfection as I've seen from a videogame.

Having played games for three decades and I can safely place Batman: AC in my top five of all time. It's simply that good.

Also Galvatron, your choice of RDR is exquisite. It is a BRILLIANT game.

Uncharted 3 Drake's Deception or InFamous 2, or God Of War 3 are the only right answers. My pick is Uncharted 3. It's the greatest game of all video game time!

Dead Space is not a horror game. Alfred Hitchcock said it best: "There is no terror in a gunshot, only in anticipation of one." Dead Space is all gunshots and no anticipation. Hell, the music even picks up right before mutants jump out at you.

I can't think of any games that I'll play 10 years from now on 4k display since they'll look like crap. But games from last gen I still play on my HDTV is Final Fantasy XII which is still the most awesome looking game on PS2 to date. While games this gen look better, they rely too much on graphics, which will be outdated next gen anyway. And awesome games like SMG2, is only in SD despite HD generation consoles being here since 2005. :(

There's too damn many. Red Dead Redemption was an amazing experience. Maybe the first Mass Effect,
