Title emphasis added because I've noticed respondents to threads like this can't help but pick 10-20 games.
This is a tough one for me between a post-nuclear open world RPG, an updated Indiana Jones-esque third person adventure shooter, or a sandbox open world action adventure game set in the Wild West. Ultimately, the Wild West won.
Red Dead Redemption is a close to perfect game. Awesome story, great surprise ending, very well written characters especially the main protagonist (John Marston is one of the best written and acted characters I've ever seen in gaming; he got absolutely robbed when Neil Patrick Harris beat his voice actor at the Spike VGAs for best actor; Spike VGAs = epic monumentous fail), fun multiplayer, great DLC, no game breaking bugs (unlike the post-nuclear open world RPG), and a lengthy quality single player campaign (unlike those modern shooters out there).
So out of the ridiculous AAA, overfinanced, developer-bankrupting games of this generation, RDR is the best I've played so far.
