Old game need help finding.

Right there was a game I used to play on the PS1 but now I can't remember what it was called up until recently I thought it was called alone in the dark but it wasn't the game I saw when I looked it up.

All I can remember of it is that you start off in a class room and then you get sucked through a vortex of some sort and then you are in a different world and at one point you get a laser type weapon.

the apperance of the game is a side scrolling type of layout kinda like abe's oddesey (PS1) or outerworld (Snes)

Any help would be great as it's a game I would really like to play again.
