I really feel like I'm in the minority on this. I personally think the Oculus Rift is going to be the next Wii. It seems like something that will turn out to be a gimmick that will collect dust in about 3 years after it will come out. I just can't see people using these regularly. I don't see gamers putting a giant pair of glasses on and moving their head around to see stuff. It seems like the fanbase is strong, but am I the only one that feels like it might flop after the first few years?

I agree.

I already wear glasses. I don't want to put another pair on over them to play games. Plus I think it looks scary. I don't think people need to be immersed that fully into a game.

I completely agree with you. I feel like it doesn't add anything to my gaming experience. It's just something that's kinda neat for a few seconds like stereoscopic 3D.

So far the Wii remote has been used as less of a gimmick with titles like Skyward Sword and the Metroid Prime games. Two games that are greatly inhanced because of the device.

100% agree. Cool tech, but I don't see it replacing regular use of TV/Monitors. Fans just want to embrace new tech, and that's cool, but I don't expect there to be a massive market for it.

Seems like an awesome idea but I don't partically want to wear contact lenses everytime I want to play games. Anyhow I prefer the sounds of the "turn your room into the scene from the game" thing microsoft announced. Is that actually a feature on the X1 or do I have another reason to be dissapointed XD

Have to admit, pretty surprised that all of the comments agree. Seems like it'll be cool, but once that "sugar high" runs off, it'll fade out. Also agree with the comment about the Wii remote. The later Wii games better used the motion controls but unfortunately they're usually overlooked, and the Wii's legacy will be the same as Guitar Hero's and most likely the Rift's.

From some of the reaction videos, I think it has serious potential to change the way we game. It just needs the right price (300 bucks is reasonable), and it needs to support HD. Apparently seeing is believing, so it may take some time for it to catch on.

It seems to be getting pretty popular, pretty fast. But I feel if they don't take it to the next level within the first few years of it, it will definitely flop.

i definitely don't think it will get close to becoming the default way to play games. it's too much hardware. the vast majority of people don't like those tiny plastic 3D glasses. a full helmet-sized device seems like a much harder sell.

If it is not the future of gaming, I think it is the beginning of the future.

Or at least one of the futures. Slapping something on your head will always be a huge barrier to entry, whereas TV as a delivery platform is as about as passive as you can get.

When one of the big three release a system with a Rift like device, and Omni like device (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1944625487/omni-move-naturally-in-your-favorite-game) and a multifunctional motion controller it might catch on. Until then, its just novelty.

I'm pretty interested in it personally and I think it will sell moderately well, but I don't see it really becoming mainstream in any way.  It's just for people who want that added level of immersion of having the game fill their entire field of vision;  most people are perfectly happy with their TV screen.

I think It will be popular for some time and then eventually will collect dust, Then 10-20 years later someone will look back on it and say " It really had potential and many of the things it did were just great and innovative. Just a shame it didn't catch on" However it is the furthest we've come to virtual reality now and shows just how we're progressing, so while I may be a little pessimistic, I really hope it will catch on and in the future be among the Top ten "Best Gaming gimmicks ever made so far"

Doesn't seem much different from the VR arcade games I tried 10 or 12 years back. Those big awkward headsets were a headache-inducing pain in the ass then, I suspect they'll be a headache-inducing pain in the ass now.

Though it may have a future with porn.

It will be a gimmick, nothing more. People were hyped for 3D gaming, that didn't last long, people were hyped for motion controls, that didn't last long.

I really feel like I'm in the minority on this. You kidding? I tend to see a lot more negative responses to the rift than positive :P I personally think the Oculus Rift is going to be the next Wii. The rift is more like your TV than a gaming console. It seems like something that will turn out to be a gimmick that will collect dust in about 3 years after it will come out. Similar to the Wii? I just can't see people using these regularly. Of course not, hell I don't always use mouse/kb when gaming too. I don't see gamers putting a giant pair of glasses on and moving their head around to see stuff. Supposedly the consumer version will be less bulky. It seems like the fanbase is strong, but am I the only one that feels like it might flop after the first few years? Seeing that the rift has made it this far thanks to fanbase support, I'd hope it's strong. And the reactions everyone has when using it and the dev support will hopefully keep this kind of development continuing.

Oozyrat

All through the years I've watched people of all ages duck, lean, flinch and react to games. Being immsered is a huge reason why I game and you're right to think not all games need to be rift immersive, but I think some games need to be rift immersive.

Looks like some goofy bullshit honestly. Big ass gaming glasses on your face? Lol, a tv or a monitor is enough gaming for me. Why have virtual reality when I can simply have a real reality?

VR will explode sooner or later as it's much more immersive than a regular screen and to immerse yourself in a world is a big part of gaming. I strongly belive a game like Amnesia will be a much more powerful experience with OR. Problem is it requires really beefy hardware because the resolution is split per eye and the framerate needs to be at least 60fps (according to Carmack preferably 120fps) to not make it feel odd when you turn your head. The new consoles are likely not powerful enough which is why I think it will take a while for the technology to have its breakthrough.

Eh Microsoft is doubling down on motion controls, making kinect 2.0 mandatory in every console. Motion gaming is not going anywhere. VR is way more immersive than 3d for obvious reasons.

A lot of people have problems with depth perception and can't see 3D, so... no, this will likely remain a gimmick.

Everyone who says the Rift is a gimmick, either doesn't know what the definition of gimmick is,or have not tried the Oculus Rift. Let me give facts on the matter.

Every FPS that anyone has ever played, is trying to emulate actually being in a virtual space. They have it where you tilt the joystick and see master chiefs feet. Or, you can see the characters hands on the gun etc. The Oculus Rift is TRUE FIRST PERSON. You turn your head and the view is a true to life representation of the game world IN STEREOSCOPIC 3d, which gives depth to the world unlike any TV screens you've seen.

So in actuality,EVERY fps you have played is a "gimmick" and the Rift is the first time that we can actually play in "TRUE FIRST PERSON". I was playing Half-Life 2 in the Rift and was walking through the train station and hit the guard. When the **** started chasing me, I "literally" looked over my shoulder to see where he was and saw him gaining on me in 3d. It...WAS....CREEPY...AS....SHIT! This is not your fathers VR. This is the future!

For those who have a dev kit...................Play Alone in the Rift. Nuff said.

the hype came and went for 3D and motion controls because of ONE reason......The TV is NOT where those things should ever have been. They are VR attributes that belong solely in an HMD. And after trying the Rift..I'm a believer. Its like the Matrix, you can't be TOLD about it. You have to try it. Thats when you go "OOOH I see" and it clicks.

No sir, . The so called "Virtual boy" is nothing of the sort. Its Stupid Red lines, on a device that had no Low latency head tracking, no accelerometers, made you see red all day, and did not have the Gpu and Cpu power we have now. Essentially, they TRIED to do VR before the tech was ready. But ooohh my its ready now. Im SURE you have access to Youtube. Check out reactions to the Rift. It's simply TELLING THE TRUTH.

I REALLY want to play Amnesia on these.

Yeah Thats probably what I should have done, because the resolution is problematic presently. But Im sort of an early adopter. I gotta tell ya though the Alone in the Rift and half life 2 among other great demos is worth the price to me LOL. If they can slap a Kinect 2.0 style sensor on the front of these bad boys. So you can see your hands in the game world this will be bigger than Iwhatever! lolol.

I find immersion is something that many whine about, but it does nothing to make the game better, and is easy to break.

I was a skeptic as well when I heard about it. Finally got to try last month and holy crap! It is the real deal. This is the next step in gaming and if you don't believe me than you haven't tried the rift yet.
