Im 14 and love gaming... My parents don't

Whenever i game for more then 1 hour at a time my parents are always on my back about how gaming "rots my brain" and that i should get outside more, even though I am a A --> B+ student at school, Play sport for over 10 hours a week...

They just don't seem to grasp that I socialise with all my friends over it and enjoy doing it. Any ideas or tips to help my parents to come to terms with this?

Have you told them what you told us? Because you make good points and if anything will rot your brain, it's TV, not games.

@typeonegamer: Look up some studies that show that they do the opposite (they exist) and show them.

most of the parents never played video games when they were young that's the reason they think its waste of time. but truth be said video games are not bad for you unless you spoil your career by it. There are studies/ research conducted by medical universities and its proved that children who play video games have better IQ and memory than regular kids. there are studies done on doctors too , doctors who play video games are better than doctors who doesn't play video games in making better decisions in emergency cases, they have 30% better skills, 30% faster in performing surgeries and makes 30% lesser errors . Video games makes your hand eye co ordination better, makes your senses better. These are the only few benefits of video games that i know of as a Doctor !

last thing i would say just don't play them at expense of ur studies. because if u study hard later u can have all the consoles and games !

My parents would encourage it. :D

You can't do much. They're stuck with their ways.

Classic example. Tell your parents they can't have plans with a human life. Ask them also would they give you more $ necessary to do things that are far costly outside or be indoor and save far more by playing games. Also, when you are outside you are exposed on far more life threatening dangers than home. Tell your parents that if they continue to treat you like that they won't be your parents for too long. I had a real life friend committed suicide when he was 21 that resulted from his family having too much expectations of him and how his life should turn out to be.

Best thing you should tell to your parents, the more they let you experience gaming to its fullest, the sooner you'll find other things more interesting like focusing on your career path when you are 20.

I'm somewhat into adulthood now (maybe not mentally lol) but when I was younger my mum was generally ok with me gaming. However she would insist on interrupting me just for the sake of interrupting my gaming sessions, she kind of does that now still.

As long as you don't game for like the entire day it's alright. You sound like a good kid, your parents just don't get videogames. It's not like your addicted to them, now if you were it would be a problem.

I'm 29 and could care less what my mom thinks about how much/little I play video games. My wife and children enjoy them. My wife and I have our "time apart" during the week to re-energize. Anyone on here who has been married for a long time know what I'm talking about. I have a good collection of older systems and games to introduce my children to classics. To @typeonegamer, try to bring a fresh idea to the table. Look up some statistics involving long term sessions vs. short term. Show them what video game addiction looks like compared to casual players. You could even try to get them involved with the games. Good luck.

Gaming improves your ability to make snap judgements.

Video games are the biggest entertainment industry in the world. Most people have widely accepted this. They are incredibly worthwhile as entertainment, and as a possible career field.

At least unlike watching television, it is active consumption of media - with TV you just have to sit there and there is no brain power involved. Also according to the US Department of Health and Human Services that gaming can delay or prevent age related cognitive decline - their words...

I'm 24 and my parents still make fun of gaming. But yet, my mom watches soap operas that have been running for 40 years....

Sorry, but I find that worse than gaming...and yet I don't judge out loud to them.

I dunno really, show them a game they might like? maybe not gameplay-wise, but story or concept-wise
