I was recently gifted a SNES for my birthday (in top 3 best gifts ever, by the way) and was wondering what some must-own SNES games I should try and get. So far I have on my list:

Gradius III

Chrono Trigger

Super Mario World

F-Zero

Mortal Kombat 3

Street Fighter Alpha 2

Kirby's Dream Land 3

NBA JAM T.E.

Donkey Kong 1 and 2 (have 3)

TMNT IV: Turtles in Time

Doom

What am I missing?

Doom is terrible on the SNES, any other version is better.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 on SNES isn't terrible, like Doom, but you can get better versions on Saturn or PS1.

Other than that, great list. Some others I'd recommend:

  • Actraiser
  • Contra III: The Alien Wars
  • Final Fight 1-3
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Maximum Carnage (Spider-Man & Venom)
  • Mega Man X 1-3
  • Mortal Kombat II
  • R-Type III: Third Lightning
  • Sim City
  • Star Fox
  • Super Castlevania IV
  • Super Mario All-Stars (Super Mario Bros. 1-3 + Lost Levels)
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Super Metroid
  • Super Street Fighter II
  • X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse

I've heard that the Genesis version of the game is better, because it's a true sequel to Rocket Knight Adventures while the SNES game is more of a spin-off. I've personally only played Rocket Knight Adventures, though, which is a fantastic platformer. I've had my eyes out for Sparkster, because of that.

TVTropes listed that version as a "porting disaster".

I played that version of SFA2, it was still quite playable (despite some flaws), fun, and my favorite Street Fighter game. Better than SFII.

Just go here. I think that this topic has been discussed to death. Also, Doom on the Genesis, 32X and Atari Jaguar as far as I remember are all garbage ports, so, yes, you can do worse than Doom on the SNES. If you have it for PC, there's no reason to get Doom on any console other than the N64, though.
