For me its Castlevania: Lord of Shadow. I wanted to get the game when it launched, unfortunately I got distracted and went off the radar until I got it for cheap recently. I must say, wow, why didn't we hear a lot about this game? From the reviews it made it sound like an average game, but is much better than the recognition it got. This game is a wet dream for someone who is a huge fan of Dark Gothic architecture flanked by sweeping vistas stretching all the way into heaven; haunting soundtrack and everything else which resonates with Dark Fantasy. The combat may appear hack and slash at first, it is different and more tactical compared to something like, say, God of War or Darksiders.

Overall, great game and wish a lot more people actually played it. Here is me anticipating the sequel to the game :)

What is according to you, the most underrated game this console gen so far?

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. I loved the music and the atmosphere in that game.

Nier.  Don't know why reviewers hated it, I thought it had perfectly good gameplay, the best music of any game this gen, great characters and a fairly interesting story.  Probably the most memorable game I've played this gen.

Dark Void is another.  Super fun game with tons of variety to the gameplay.  And a fairly interesting story with unique atmosphere as well.

I did enjoy Lords of Shadow. The game looked great and the combat could be fun. That being said the music in the game didn't capture me, It was more background-ish cmopared to pasy OSTS in the series. The puzzles were lame, I've had more fun with combat from other games, the "SOTC"-ish bosses weren't as fun or engaging as, well, the bosses from Shadow of the Colossus, and the last boss was lame.

The game is "okay", but nothing very memorable or special, and probably my third least favorite castlevania, beating out castlevania II: Simon's Quest and Castlevania: the Adventure.

As for my personal pick for this thread, I would Metroid Other M. Story issues aside, I found the gameplay to actually be pretty damn good. fun combat, great boss battles, and even though it wasn't as open an game there still managed to be some secret and upgrades to be uncovered. I 'll never understand what is so bad about the controls either, as they worked quite well in my experience.

I bought The Saboteur a few years back and after getting about halfway through the game I let me sisters boyfriend borrow it because I had so many games I wanted to play at the time so I figured I'd get back to it eventually, a while later they broke up and I never saw it again. Just bought it again about a week ago and I'm loving it. The story is interesting, the mechanics are pretty damn good, the music is good, the atmosphere, voice acting, characters, all good. I absolutely love that you can approach nearly every single mission how you want, you can go all out and kill everything in sight, or play it stealth, either disguised in a Nazi uniform or sneaking about trying not to get spotted. I don't know why this game got such mediocre scores. There's only one thing I wish the game let you do is enter a cheat to keep the game in black and white after you've liberated an area. The black and white just looks so damn good and different, in color you can see the aging graphics and it just doesn't look nearly as interesting. Regardless, it's a great game and I think anyone who likes open world games should give it a play if they haven't already. Unlike a lot of non linear games who say you can approach objectives as you see fit, this one actually delivers on that option.

Another game I'd like to add which is hardly Underrated but I feel a lot of people missed out on is Deus Ex: HR. Easily one of the best games this gen.

I've also heard so many great things about Nier, almost everyone seems to love it. I'll be picking it up eventually, hopefully it lives up to the hype fans have created over the past couple years.

^ The Saboteur was a huge favorite of mine too.  Loved the music especially, and the freedom to choose how you'd go about every mission.  Just fantastic atmosphere overall and driving cars around Paris was a blast.  Climbing to the top of the Eiffel Tower gave me a serious case of vertigo as well :)

Yeah, something I forgot to mention is how you can go anywhere on the map, climb any building, up the Eiffel Tower, just about anywhere really. So much freedom.

This, Saboteur and Nier were all Games I enjoyed but I loved Mirror Edge. Army of Two: The 40th Day was also a memorable game no one talked about.

I thought Mafia II was underrated by most reviewers, it got criticised for not having a lot to do in the city but anyone with a brain could see that it wasn't trying to be the next GTA.

Bayonetta. Not underrated, as it got great reviews, but not near enough sales and it's amazing.

Definitely Vanquish.  If it wasn't for the lackluster story and short length, this would definitely be among the top games of the generation.  I'd still give it a 9/10 though.

Just finished the Saboteur tonight, people really need to play this game, so damn good. I deserves at least 8.5's if not 9's and above. It's too bad it got shit on by critics and published by EA otherwise they could have made a great sequel. But Pandemic is no more so it'l never happen.

Still, the game had all this empty space with nothing to do. A few side missions expanding how you worked your way up the Mafia ladder would have added to the game and the story. Great game, but it felt hollow to me.

On PS3 I'd have to say Siren Blood Curse, one of my favorite of Sony's exclusives that I feel never gets any credit. On Xbox 360, I'd say the Dance Central games, they're so much fun.

The Saboteur really is a great game and a heck of a swan song for Pandemic to go out on. It really is too bad they were shuttered. Still the only Xbox 360 game I got every single achievement in.

RAGE

Playing through it at the moment and I gotta say, I'm impressed. After all the bad user ratings and lack of any attention after it came out, I wasn't expecting much, but maybe that was a good thing. The gameplay mechanics is superb along with the weaponary and gadgets. The story is decent, the wasteland itself is pretty dead besides the whole driving aspect of the game and the god awful texture pop-in's, but for some reason I'm looking past all it's faults and highly enjoying it.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for post apocalyptic games :D

I know it sounds odd to claim Farcry 3, since it's no means underrated overall, but a lot of people snub their nose at it by putting it into the same category as Modern Warfare or thinking it's just a first person shooter. It's more an adventure game then any point and click I've ever played and the gap towards a truely interactive movie just narrowed.

Agreed, with Fatal Frame warming the bench this whole generation, and Silent Hill relocating to the west for it's development and promptly sucking a big one, Siren: Blood Curse wasn't afraid to be a survival horror game, and that's great.

Ditto on the DmC reboot. That's a great game simply ignored by the fanbase, which is too bad.

Lords of Shadow underrated? That game is mostruously overrated. If it didn't have the Castlevania name it would have been ignored and forgotten 5 minutes after release. In fact it's so unrelated to the Castlevania franchise that I suspect it was supposed to be a new IP, but they later decided to slap the Castevania logo on it in order to have people pay attention... and it worked.

It has to be Vanquish. When it came out I heard nothing of it. Luckily I got it as a Christmas present and played the hell out of it. When I went online to talk about it, it was like the game never existed in the first place....

I think Darksiders is very under-appreciated. As far as I'm concerned it's what God of War should be by now. Darksiders is just the better game in almost every single way, but doesn't get even close to the same praise.

I've actually heard something like this before, that it wasn't originally supposed to be a Castlevania game. Regardless I think it sold like 1.5 million and is getting a sequel. Not the underrated game of the gen for sure.
