Afternoon everyone!

Was just curious if anyone wanted to discuss some of their most disappointing games of the gen. This recently has been sitting on my mind as I got burned by a game I was looking forward to for quite some time, Donut County.

While the heart of the title is great, and it's coated in charm, the fact that I was able to beat the entire game in little over an hour was incredibly disheartening, and I find myself bitter and negative about the experience since, even though there was a lot that I enjoyed going in.

Does anyone else have any titles that made them feel this way or am I just a bitter asshole(or both lol)?

Not that exact way, but I found inFamous Second Son to be a terrible game. Also Dragon Age Inquisition.

Both games were completely misrepresented in reviews.

I had a lot of hype for The Witcher 3, but ended up hating it when I finally played it. That combat is such garbage.

Pretty much anything published by EA.

Dragon Age Inquisition was one that I actually cared about... So that sucked.

Although I got some enjoyment out of it, Mass Effect Andromeda is probably the main one.

Battlefront reboots. Could have been so much more, but EA forgot their fans, remembered their greed.

Nier Automata.

Also DAI, started great with all these sub worlds, but then you find it is all filler, which was a complete waste in my opinion.

The Witcher 3, I purchased a PS4 last November (Black Friday), mainly in anticipation to play RDR2 until that game got delayed, really the only reason I picked up a PS4, I was really just happy with my PS3 and the huge backlog of games I got. So I picked up this game for cheap. SOOOO must hype about this game. But when I played it, it just made me want to go back and finish Skyrim.

thief reboot was gash (i love the originals and stealth games in general).

mankind divided, whilst not terrible or anything, just really failed to hit the spot and was completely unremarkable. i had high hopes for it. arkham knight falls in a similar bracket.

fallout 4 felt like a last gen game and the evolution from 3 to 4 was nothing like the jump we saw in its sister series elder scrolls from morrowind to oblivion or oblivion to skyrim. i still sunk 20+ hours into it though so, again, it wasn't terrible, just disappointing.

hitman was also a big let down. i don't think the premise suits a sandbox environment

Mafia 3 is a wasted open world that lacks variety with lazy repetitive mission design it's such a shame because the characters and setting is great.

Watch Dogs even though I enjoyed this game more then the sequel the downgrade hurt this game so bad Ubisoft's Bullshit tarnished this game forever.

Mankind Divided I honestly forget this game exist sometimes it's time to change the formula.

The thing that I hate the most about any game is when you have to do something within a time limit. I absolutely hate it, I like to do something in my own time. I find for me it just takes the enjoyment out of the whole thing.

Way too many:

1. Mass Effect Andromeda

2. Final Fantasy XV

3. Asura's Wrath

4. Watch_Dogs

5. Blue Reflection

I want to add indie games too but I'm afraid the list can get too long to write down.

From the top of my head- Little Big Planet 3, Shadow of the Beast (2016), Mass Effect: Andromeda, Thief (2014), Umbrella Corps, Dragon Age: Inquisition, No Man’s Sky, Mighty No.9, The Elder Scrolls: Online, and_

every Sonic the Hedgehog game that's not Sonic Mania.

*Pokémon: Let's Go will join the list later this year.

No Man's Sky definitely disappointed me at launch. If you haven't I'd urge you to give it another shot now that the NEXT update is out though. I get that it might be too little too late for some, but it really makes the game a lot more appealing to me personally.

Infamous SS wasn't the best, but a terrible game? Now that's odd.

Mass Effect Andromeda immediately springs to mind however I did enjoy it as a game in general just not as a Mass Effect game.

How was that a disappointment? No one thought it would be good.

Plot twist though: It’s actually not a bad survival game.

Definitely both SW Battlefront games. Been playing SW games since the snes always had fun. These games were all looks and no substance. I miss Lucasarts terribly. Sim City and Sims 4 as well but I had low expectations with those.

MGS V Phantom Pain. As a 10/10 game it was pretty awful.(Bland open world was it's main problem) and it was also pretty noobish.(it has lots of broken weapons and equipments that turn this game into what it really is, a bad joke)

Star Wars Battlefront games were also pretty awful, original Battlefront games were the clones of original Battlefield games and then DICE made these Battlefronts like a noob developer that has no idea how to make these type of games.

Another disappointing games that come to my mind are all Bethesda's games that were buggy on launch.

@mistervulpes: Some people may have been caught off guard by it. Survive was a terrible Metal Gear game. They should have called it something else as it has nothing to do with the main series.

Probably Fallout 4. I usually try to avoid hype for new games, but some of the inital reveal trailers were incredible.

It's not even that the game is bad. They are just not trying to appeal to the existing fans.

Bayonetta 2, Nier Automata, and Evil Within 2. The first two are still much better than the average game release though.

No one was caught off guard. The reaction from the reveal trailer alone was vitriolic enough.

If you thought it was going to be anything like other Metal Gear games then you’re stupid.

@mistervulpes: I wasn't expecting it to be exactly like the other Metal Gear games, rather I would have thought that at least it would be up there in terms of quality with other spin off titles like Metal Gear Revengaence, but it wasn't.

Instead they ended up using the brand power as a cash grab. You may think it's not a bad game, but you're in the minority there. Even as a survival game it's terrible imo.

I would have to the say The Evil Within.

I am a huge horror fan, and this game was just so bad I couldn't stand it. We rented it for a weekend, played it for about 6 hours, and I just couldn't anymore. Didn't like anything about it.

@dragonfly110: Hmm it's a tough recommendation. Currently playing Disgaea: Refine a lot. That, plus Monster Hunter: World. And with Divinity: Original Sin 2 just getting a big upgrade patch/ from a game that was already amazing, don't think NMS will ever be on my radar.

Suppose I should stop spitting on No Mans Sky though; if it's a reasonably better product now.

@Blueresident87 said: I would have to the say The Evil Within.

As someone who loves Survival Horror. I adored TEW and its sequel. However what I've seen from multiple view points, it's a very love-it-or-hate-it series. The latter is odd to me, because TEW does Survival Horror exceedingly well.

Quite a few, though strangely they all got better over time...

Master Chief Collection. Really enjoyed going through the campaigns again with my bud, but we bought the Xbox 1 to play this game online, and it didn’t work. Huge letdown. Eventually it did work and we played quite a bit, but it still left me sour. Apparently it’s still facing major issues, but I didn’t see any last time I tried.

Destiny. Halo under Bungie is probably my favorite franchise, so I was obviously excited for their next venture. The game was disappointing for a lot of reasons, but also strangely addicting/satisying. It did fix most of its major problems over time, but I eventually lost interest. I never tried 2, though I will say this franchise has the best gunplay in the biz.

Division. Destiny woke up my interest in the looter shooter genre, and this peaked my interest a lot. Similar to Destiny, it had a disappointing introduction but got better over time. This game got really good though, where I’d say it’s the best in its genre. Looking forward to the sequel, and hope Ubisoft has learned from their mistakes.

MGSV for me is the biggest disappointment this gen. which is weird because metal gear is my second favourite franchise of all time, plus I love open world games. But I was bored to tears after the brilliant opening revealed a lifeless brown world to explore. I couldn’t force myself to play more than 10 hours.

  • MGS5 - superbly repetitive, levels looked boring, story was meh... honestly as a big MGS fan I was appalled.
  • Guild Wars 2 - Hyped as a revolutionary MMO, ended up being a repetitive snore fest.
  • Final Fantasy 15 - I'm done with the FF franchise. After a decade in development, it was forgettable at best.

what made you think it was there to be explored and not just serve as a sandbox battlefield for each mission? it was the afghan desert. beyond sand, sand and more sand, and maybe the odd donkey, what were you expecting to discover?

genuinely curious as i've seen a few people say what you're saying and i don't get the criticism

@Macutchi: I get that maybe the setting was true to life, but it just didn’t seem like a great setting for an open world game. Every location looked the same to me. I do get the praise it received for its emergent gameplay but for me it just felt boring compared to the different locations in mgs4 for example. To answer the question ‘what was I expecting?’, I’m not really sure and was sceptical going in tbh. I just wish they stuck to something more linear for this particular series.
