I have played MGS1, MGS4, MGSV:GZ, and I am just over halfway done with MGS V:TPP(people say that's basically most of it lol, still playing and loving it though).

I am wondering what the correct order is to get the most out of the story or to follow it the most. I don't mind re-playing them so I can get the story in one long stretch. I just got the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection which includes MGS2: Sons of Liberty, MGS3: Snake Eater, and MGS: Peace Walker. I'm alittle lost on where to start(i don't mind skipping MGS1 since i've already played it).

Also, are both MGS2: Substance and MGS3: Subsistence vital to the story or am i ok if i just play through #1, then the hd collection, then #4, and lastly Ground Zero's and TPP? HALP!

The order should be

1>2>3>4>Peace Walker>Ground Zeroes>5

@meathead373: So you recommend that over the other side of the argument that playing them by the date of events in the story? just curious to what your thoughts or reasoning is.

I've always been one for playing games in the order they're released, see it unfold how it was intended, plus if you end up with more or a prequel type of game like 3 you don't end up spoiling things in the other games from playing it first.

The order they released in is the best order.

Even though 3 takes place before 1 and 2. It's still written and presented under the assumption that you played the previous games. It still makes sense as a standalone game, or if you play it in chronological order. However some things are supposed to be mysteries, if you play the games out of the order they were intended in you may be given the answer to the mystery before the mystery itself. Which would spoil some of the story.

I'd recommend playing them in the order that they were released because so many story and revelation moments will be much more impactful then.

MGS2: Substance and MGS3: Subsistence are just beefed up versions of the original game.

If you're playing the HD collection, then you are playing the Substance and Subsistence versions.

Sweet. I will play them in the order of their release then, since that sounds more exciting and traditional, kind of like watching the original trilogy of Star Wars 4-6 before watching the prequel trilogy.

Release order.

There are references made to previously released games regardless of setting chronology.

Exactly. Think how much less impactful Vader's reveal in Episode 5 would have been if you watched the prequels first.
