I know the story is excellent, but is the gameplay still good?

I personally don't like the first two metal gear games.

They haven't aged well at all and the stealth mechanics are terrible, oh and MG2 is in Japanese, so good luck with that.

Translations are available. But i mean, are they as exciting as the MGS games? Many say the first one sucks these days but how else as MG2 held up?

I hated the port of the first and its sequel for the NES, I think the sequel was even worse. On the MSX (or on the second disk of Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater Subsistence) the first game and its sequel are both really good. I don't think Kojima had anything to do with the NES port of his first game or with the NES sequel.

Yep im talking about the MSX2 games. Ive got Subsistence but i dont know if i should play through them. The NES MG1 was a terrible port, and the other game, Snakes Revenge was an action-orientated game made for the West, also another game that Kojima wasnt involved in. Can you tell me whats so great about MG2?

Sorry, it's been a long time since I played them. I don't remember all that much. From what I remember I would probably agree with swaz and say that they haven't aged well. They were both good at the time, and I remember enjoying playing through them but I really don't remember all that much about them when I did.

It's a question of whether or not you can appreciate retro games. If you are one of those with little patience I wouldn't bother. Anyway, if you have it, why are you asking? Just try it out. Yeesh.

I'm playing MG2: Solid Snake now via Disc 2 of Subsistence. It's definitely worth playing. The gameplay is still solid and it's surprisingly detailed for a game of it's age. like stated above, it's pretty much like playing Metal Gear Solid 1 in 2d.

Okay then, i dont mind the punishing difficulty, long as its as dense and cinematic as the MGS games.

You'd be surprised at how similar, in terms a cinematic flair, MG2 is to its older brothers.

Many of the series staples and style originated from MG2.

It's certainly worth a try and I'm sure you'll enjoy it if you're a Metal Gear fan.
