...by GameSpot. What do you guys think?

Star Ocean: First Departure received a 6.0

Star Ocean: Second Evolution received a 7.5

Crimson Gem Saga received a 5.0

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite received a 6.5

And the two Final Fantasy Anniversery Editions also received low scores of 6.0 and 6.5 (I ALMOST agree with this...)

Honestly I think this is just unfair. I'm not nuts about each game I listed, but I think their scores should've been higher, and their reviewers should've looked at the games for what they are. Not what they could have been. The one that bugs me the most is the score given to Star Ocean: First Departure. The ONLY bad thing I could think of about the game is that it was annoying traveling back and forth to towns on foot, but that's about it. The skill system, private actions, and battle system are unique (ish) and make the game so much more enjoyable than the "typical RPG" people have been labeling the game as.

EDIT: I know I listed only PSP JRPG's, but DS RPG's are also underrated by this site. I was just listing games off the top of my head and they all ended up being for PSP... lol

don't forget Valkyria Profile as well.

and Yggdra Union too.

Anyway, I think the reason why this is happening is because they let no-name interns do reviews for these. Since no one buys PSP games anyway, they are using their senior reviewers for bigger console and title.

Since interns are usually young guys, they are probably too young to appreciate JRPGs and go "YEA FPS!! ROCK ON!!"

I really, really loved Jeanne D'Arc. I know it's a strategy rpg, but it was great.

Umm... no dude. None of those games were that good. There isn't some elaborate conspiracy- the games just aren't that good.

No they are good.

unfortunately, people have twisted view of what a good game is.

People would rather play bug filled Oblivion with no interesting story or art, just D&D formulas and ignore fine work of art like Valkyrie Profile.

I agree. Oblivion just felt empty, but still recieved a high score.

Opinions. I'd much rather play a WRPG like Oblivion over a cliche JRPG. Played one JRPG, you played em all. At least in Oblivion, I can break away from the main storyline and do something else.

But back to topic. JRPG's on the PSP aren't underrated on gamespot. This sounds like all the Wii fanboys who cried over The Conduits review and claimed they hated the Wii, and only backed the PS3 and the 360. That's just not true. The games just aren't that great and get low scores.

I love WRPG's. I'm looking forward to Dragon Age for the PC once it's out. Looking forward to Arcania even more.

JRPG's aren't all the same though. There are A LOT of similar ones but that doesn't mean you can't break away from the story in JRPG's and do something else. It's not just WRPG's that do this. This is exactly my point about Star Ocean: First Departure. People seem to label it as "Just another JRPG" and don't even bother with anything else it offers, and for an old SNES game, it offers quite a bit. WRPG's have only done one thing that JRPG's rarely do, and that's offering a branching story with choices. They let you role-play as yourself. Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile offer some non-linearity themselves. Just like Trianglehard mentioned, Valkyrie Profile is a very unique, fantastic game that has a story and gameplay you don't see in any other RPG's.

Oh and by the way. There are only a handful of "non-linear" WRPG's. The others are just click-fest action RPG's with hardly a story and nothing but grinding. At least if you grind in a JRPG you have a story to play through while you do it.

Umm... I ride the Oblivion hate train as well. I'm not going to defend that game. However, that still doesn't make those other games exceptional.

However, since you mention Valkyrie Profile on PSP, that remake only scored 1% lower on Metacritic than the original. A port of a six-year-old game got almost the same score. IGN declared it the best RPG for the system.

Yeah, Gamespot only gave it a 7.5, but here is what they wrote.

"A solid port of a one-of-a-kind role-playing game that is endlessly appealing to genre fans who are looking for something different, but it's a bit too dense for everyone else."

And guess what? THAT'S TOTALLY RIGHT! Please, there are already enough games that get irrational hate from the internets, like GTA and Halo. Don't imagine hate for games when it doesn't exist.

i pretty much own most rpgs for the psp. so up till now only crisis core is superb. the rest are really bad. there are ofcourse some that come out of the masses. try these: Monster kingdom:jewel Summoner, Blade Dancer, Valkyrie profile, Brave Story(even though it looks a little like final fantasy/kingdom hearts)

i didn't like star ocean and phantasy star but you may like them. coded soul could be good... if it comes to us/eu

i want to see the shin megami tensei. this might be good.

I really wouldn't use Oblivion as the ideal WRPG, just because despite what metacritic will tell you, it may very well be the most divisive rpg, western or otherwise, out there right now. I myself couldn't get into it or Fallout and would take a good jrpg over either game any day. Same went for Fable II. On the other hand, I loved Mass Effect far more than any jrpg i've played in a while.

I'm sorry? What were you trying to get at? Was I trying to tell other people they shouldn't be using their opinons like they're facts or something?

At the ending I meant to put "They're just not as great as you want them to be and get low(er) scores." I got lazy lol. They're reviewers. They give you their opinion on the game. No opinion is the same, which is why I put my opinion in my last post.
