so i was playing some old PC rpgs like gothic and gothic 2, and i wanted to max the game's resolution to the maximum that my monitor accepts ( 1440*900) the problem is that now all the fonts are very small and near unreadable, is there any way i can play these games at such a high-resolution without suffering this problem?

At the time they were created the developers didn't really think that far ahead when it came to resolution so no.
I've yet to encounter a old game that can be played on todays high resolution.

There weren't widescreen monitors back then. That's why I'm sticking with my old 17''.

Maximum screen resolution is not determined by hardware, but software limitations. If programmers implemented a set of video modes ranging from 640x480 to 1024x768, there's no way you'll set it higher, unless a mod comes out.

Followup question: Can you force those old games into a windowed mode so that you don't have to look at stretched graphics?

Yap, normally you just put "-windowed" at the end of the game shortcut.

Or you can set your monitor to 4:3.
