Hey guys, there's this one game I once played as a kid and I would like to go back ad try it out again, but I can't figure what game it was even if my life depended on it.

I'm pretty sure it was an action RPG, set in medieval times, and all I can truely remember is that it involves portals that (I think) go into other worlds/times, I remember one portal had a gorilla commig out of it.

The game was also mainly set at night time (at least the parts I remember playing).

I know it's really too little to go on, but does anybody remember a PC game set in medieval times that involves portals of some sorts?

When were you a kid (i.e. approximate year you played this game)? What kind of graphics are we talking about? Isometric view? First Person? Was it 3d or sprite based?

Oh, right .p It was around late 90's It was 3D graphics and I can't recall if it was 3rd or 1st person view, possibly had the option of either. The Wheel of Time just might be it, I recognize the player icon from the top left torner of the screen, I'll look into it more to make sure if that's it. Thanks for help so far guys :D

Even though i've never had a problem using DOSBox, i highly recommend "D-fend Reloaded" which basically runs DOSBox in a Windowed environment:

http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/

Even if you know your way around the old DOS, there's really no reason to stick to it with this better solution in existence!

there was a Mega CD version? I know there was a Mega Drive one, but Mega CD? anything different? and yes the PC version is still the best, if you can tweak the settings you can get some really great music and voices out of it. that said, the Amiga version is also pretty decent.

It's a very different game, in fact, there's a funny story behind how it got made.

The developer (Cryo) originally started working on the game, but the publisher instead decided to go with Westwood's take on it (Dune 2), however, Cryo never stopped working on it, eventually a rep from Virgin went to France to meet Cryo's CEO face-to-face and ready to file them with a cease and desist claim and according to Cryo's CEO he replied with something like this:

"If you weren't an idiot, you'd first take a look at our game and THEN you'd make the decision on whether or not you want us to stop"

The rep from Virgin saw the game and decided to publish it and 6 months later we got Westwood's Dune, now renamed Dune 2 :P

as for the game itself, Dune 1 is a mix of RTS and point n' click adventure, it's a very unique game and honestly, I like it better then Dune 2, mostly because Dune 2 has been outdone several times over the years, whereas there's really no other game like Dune 1

the game is abandonware, so to my knowledge it's legal to download, though I reccomend you search for the PC-CD version, it features some improvements like voice acting.

Oh, also, Dune 1 has an amazingly immersive soundtrack, it's in my opinion one of the best videogame OST's of its time

well , Id rather have physical versions of both Dune 2 and 1, I have Dune 2 as part of a compliation , but not on its own , and its surprisingly rare.

is that the American version? the European version has a different cover

http://image.gamespotcdn.net/gamespot/images/box/6/9/1/564691_98879_front.jpg

although this is one case where I think the US cover is better.

its annoying, if you look on Ebay UK , most of the sales are for the Amiga versions, very few PC copies, and the ones that are there are much more expensive.

ironically Dune is more common , but again its mostly for the Amiga , or the PC floppy disc edition.

well , its a dilemma, the collector in me says I need the boxed version , the gamer side of me says not to bother, because its expensive , and due to a lack of space, especially when it comes to big PC boxes.

as a kid, I never kept my PC game boxes, only the game cases, kinda regret that, because I got games like Diablo 2 , Starcraft, etc, and now all Ive got are the game cases and discs.

if it weren't the game he'd have comeback by now

"Oh, right .p It was around late 90's It was 3D graphics and I can't recall if it was 3rd or 1st person view, possibly had the option of either.

The Wheel of Time just might be it, I recognize the player icon from the top left torner of the screen, I'll look into it more to make sure if that's it.

Thanks for help so far guys big_smile.gif"

don't know he might be busy so couldn't come but thats not the point here what i am trying to say is there's just 2-3 answers to the original question and the rest is all about Dune 2 which is not in any way related to the original question
and we are just cluttering up this thread even more so lets end it here

rilpas

Not necessarily. Perhaps the op is travelling abroad. Perhaps he's cycling across Europe. Perhaps he was rock climbing and he got his arm pinned under a rock and he's using a pocket knife to chop it off as we speak.

Or perhaps he just forgot. :)

Well I'm done chopping off my arm with a pocket knife, and I have to say, I'm still not sure if it is or not The Wheel of Time. :P I looked at tons of gameplay of it, I just don't remember the game being like that. But the character icon, I remember that sooo well, but I must be confusing it with something else. Anyhow, I didn't post about it because I'm not sure if it IS but neither sure if it ISN'T that game, and the thread was hijaked so I didn't bother asking about it anymore :P I do appreciate the help nonetheless.
