May times I find the sad ending is just there to be there so the story seem more gritty. If you want a sad ending then you need to buy the sad ending.

Many times I find the sad ending just a slap in the face inorder for that story to be different.

obviously a significant part depends on the game. but generally speaking, most of my favorite endings in games/movies/books/whatever occupy some space in between. like some stories really earn that happy ending or they're just so generally pleasant that it works. sometimes a straight punch in the gut works best. however, usually the most satisfying ending captures the good and bad of the situation. i think it's more relatable because that's how most stories work out in life if you give them any perspective, good and bad. still, i think there's just something to be said for letting the user cling on to the good while being moved by the bad. even beyond emotional value, that in-between ending can be more thoughtful and leave more open to interpretation.

Depends on the story leading up to the ending, I think...

Seen happy endings I've loved and sad endings I've loved...don't really prefer one over the other...different stories just need different endings...

I prefer it when an ending makes sense.

A well wriiten, beleivable happy ending if plausible. Or at least one where the main character survives.  The protagonist dies in the end crap gets old when every single dev believes this is how you make a lasting impression and add realism. Games like Red Dead Redemption, God Of War, LA. Noire, The Walking Dead, and even very recent releases which I won't mention for spoiler reasons.

Not saying every ending needs to be sunshine suzy, but does a main character that we've made a connection with thhroughout the game really need to bite the bullet in the end just for the sake of shock value?

There are many other ways to convey morbid empathy besides the overdone protagonist death. Take the twist in Shadow Of The Colossus's ending for instance. Protagonist death? Sure, but it was done in an 'oh shit!' kind of way.

Sad endings, I feel like they're more realistic.

Well written ones that make sense.

But in general, happy endings. As non realistic as it is.....I'm playing a f*cking video game and having fun; the last thing I need is some heavily depressing shit that just weighs on me and makes me contemplate my own god damn life. I've got trouble as it is, I don't need anymore on my mind, thank you very much.

Happy...sad...doesn't matter to me tbh. I just want one that is good (quality), satisfying (brings things to a good conclusion after a 10-100 hour investment), and longer than a 30 second 'congrats' screen.

It depends. I love great sad endings, but them being "sad" doesn't immediately make them better than happy ones.

yeah, if they establish certain lore and what can or not happen in the universe i dont want a bs ending that throws everything out of the window a la mass effect 3 that just introduces a new god kid at the last 5 mins that can do everything and anything. To me an ending has to be believable and with the tone of the established universe.

This right here and not all endings are happy or sad some have a mixture of both moments.

Depends on the game. While I definitely enjoy a 'sad' ending when it's well written and played out, I can very easily see I would get frustrated if every game/movie was doing that just because they think it's more memorable or whatever.

I think it makes sense that happy endings are more frequent and I like it that way, but I'm not opposed to sad endings at all either.

Exactly this.

But rather a crappy happy ending than a crappy sad ending

I don't mind either. As long as it's satisfying or ends on a damn good cliffhanger.

I find sad endings more impactful.. the original Mafia's ending was very well done. Doesn't matter if it's happy or sad, as long as it's well written and fits well.

I agree it's more impactful, but I really do not always need impactful. Sometimes I just want to go bed and be able to sleep when I finish a game. Sometimes. I just want that sometimes. Is that okay? Is that okay Ken Levigne? It really wouldn't make you happy to write a game that made it able for me to sleep?

It all depends on how the story goes. Not a game, but A.I had an amazing ending, even though it was a tear-jerking and horribly sad moment.

What others have said really, I just want a well-done ending. Although it does seem that out of the games I've played with more memorable endings, they ended on a tragic note. Perhaps that has more impact on the player, or on me at least, especially when it involves the death of the protagonist. That's not to say I necessarily prefer this kind of ending, again, I just want it to be well executed and unforgettable.
