It is almost here, the biggest game of the year! Perhaps the biggest game of the generation! We are a little more than a month away so its time to kick off the countdown. Everything is going to be kicked into high gear now, new pics, the official website updated constantly, and a new trailer this thursday. This thread will update as all the new info, media and eventually reviews come in.

The official website has just began to update. Here is what we can expect from the coming month.

http://www.rockstargames.com/V/

and there's more coming in the next couple of weeks.

GTA Online Details  (Thanks to Young_Charter)

Features:

  • Players can invest in their character through customizing their appearance, improving their stats, owning customized vehicles, purchasing personal property, choosing their favourite weapons and vehicles and taking part in missions, jobs and activities.
  • Players have the freedom to explore alone or with friends, work cooperatively to complete missions, band together to participate in activities and ambient events, or compete in traditional game modes.
  • As progress is achieved through the world of GTA Online, players will be introduced to new characters, missions, rewards and such.
  • A maximum of 16 players can be active at any one time as part of an online universe of hundreds of thousands competing to earn Reputation Points (RP), money and almost limitless material acquisition.
  • As you speak into your headset, your GTA Online character will lip-sync broadly in time. When robbing a liquor store, AI characters will react to the urgency in your voice, stuffing money more quickly in the bag.
  • The Content Creator will allow players to create and share their own missions and activities via the Social Club cloud. Other players can beat your target times and scores, then rate your mission. You can even choose which creators you want to follow and curate your favourite missions.
  • The Feed, a twitter-like program, appears on screen to relay all your emails, texts and messages from Social Club.
  • The world of Grand Theft Auto Online will constantly grow and change as new content is added, and at some stage GTA Online will head into new locations. Access to Grand Theft Auto Online is free with every retail copy of Grand Theft Auto V and launches on October 1st.

General:

  • Your ranking will be based off of shooting, driving, parachuting and flying skills.
  • People can access their data through Social Club and via their iPhones or iPads.
  • There is a mode called "passive mode" which means you can't shoot people and they can't shoot you.
  • A "Bad Sport" stat will be given for bad behaviour such as blowing up another player's car, and if it's done persistently you will be punished.
  • if your multiplayer character at Max Payne 3 had a high level, it will be carried over to GTA: Online for more bonuses that you will unlock.
  • Matchmaking is based off of ranking, so it prioritizes your friends' rankings, crewmembers' rankings and even strangers so that when you need people, you know who to get.
  • GTA Online tracks who your rivals are and lets you know when they've come online so you can get some revenge on them.

Multiplayer:

  • You can assemble a team from your friends list, or recruit according to specialist skills. As you rob a liquor store or perform a heist, the team member that does the job gets the cash and can choose how much to share.
  • It's possible to spread the wealth by sharing cash, weapons and ammo among your team. In turn, they can 'defect' and try to steal your cash.
  • You can pick up your phone to 'ring' friends in single player and invite them into your world. Your friends will be listed under 'Contacts' on your phone.
  • Set up challenges and post it to the Social Club and players can try and beat your score, if they beat your score -- you give them cash.

Miscellaneous:

  • You start GTA: Online arriving to Los Santos pennyless and you must complete a few missions first to get a feel of the online.
  • There will be loads of property to buy at different prices, according to their views and location. You can use your in-house CCTV to spy on people at your front door, or take showers, surf the net, change clothes and watch the game's many TV channels.
  • You can take out insurance and ring for a replacement car if yours gets destroyed.
  • You can pay a personal mechanic to fix your cars automatically, or deliver them to any location.
  • You can also check any vehicle's stats for speed, handling etc, before making your choice to purchase.
  • You can watch real-time events such as police chases on your TV moments after you see them speed past your house.
  • Your custom cars show as markers on the map and get impounded if you leave them too long. You can pay to retrieve them.
  • You will be able to deposit your money into your bank account as often as you can. When another player kills you, they can snatch the wallet right from your dead body.
  • You can switch between single player and online mode by selecting your multiplayer avatar from the character wheel.
  • If you're fleeing from another player, you can call up a buddy to hide your radar blip.
  • Passengers will be able to change the in-car radio.
  • You will have contacts available at anytime that will provide different services on or off mission, as you rank higher you will have access to characters with new and stronger abilities. Examples of such are being hidden from the radar and setting a bounty on another player if you're being chased.
  • If you steal a vehicle, you can spray and change the plates. Some vehicle customisation businesses might not be willing to do that and you may get a wanted level.
  • Weasel News will pick up people that have got wanted levels.
  • There is a planning room in people's apartments.
  • If you are in a heist and need some help, you can invite your friends and they will be teleported to you instantly.
  • The experience is seamless between transitions for free-roam and missions.
  • You can call up a private security firm to bring in an airstrike, i.e. destroy street races.

Reviews

IGN 10/10 shocking!

Grand Theft Auto V is not only a preposterously enjoyable video game, but also an intelligent and sharp-tongued satire of contemporary America. It represents a refinement of everything that GTA IV brought to the table five years ago. Its technically more accomplished in every conceivable way, but its also tremendously ambitious in its own right. No other world in video games comes close to this in size or scope, and there is sharp intelligence behind its sense of humour and gift for mayhem. It tells a compelling, unpredictable, and provocative story without ever letting it get in the way of your own self-directed adventures through San Andreas.

It is one of the very best video games ever made.

Edge 10/10

No one makes worlds like Rockstar, but at last it has produced one without compromise. Everything works. It has mechanics good enough to anchor games of their own, and a story that is not only what GTA has always wanted to tell but also fits the way people have always played it. Its a remarkable achievement, a peerless marriage of world design, storytelling and mechanics that pushes these ageing consoles to the limit and makes it all look easy. As we stand on the brink of a new generation, GTAV sends an intimidating message to the rest of the industry. Beat that.

TheSixthAxis 10/10

GTA V doesnt break new ground. Its not going to change the world. It is, after all, the fifth numbered title in a well loved series and for the most part it is simply delivering more of what the developers must know the fans want to see. To expect otherwise is idiocy. But it is engaging, compelling, interesting, clever, funny and packed with things to do and see. Its a personal story, or several personal stories, set in a magnificent world that ebbs and flows with thousands of people who all seem to be living their own personal stories. Its a genuine landmark event in the history of videogames and its one that you definitely shouldnt miss.

CVG 10/10

We've said enough. Part of Grand Theft Auto V's magic is discovery, and enjoying the thrilling, unpredictable ride the story takes you on. Whether you're in the thick of a bank heist or exploring the wilderness listening to Johnny Cash on the country station, it always feels tight, refined, and polished. The world is breathtaking, the script is funny, the music is superb (both the licensed tracks and the atmospheric original score), and, most of all, it's really, really fun.

GamesTM 10/10

Sam Houser compared the making of Rockstars epic to the troubled production of Francis Ford Coppolas Apocalypse Now, and in some ways the same result has been met: a product that represents the peak of the blockbuster triple-A form, that realises grand ambition without visible compromise. Its likely youre reading this review with the intention of already buying Grand Theft Auto V indeed, its release is a deserved cultural event, and while this sequel may not be remembered for showing us anything strictly new, this represents the pinnacle of Rockstars design ingenuity across every single discipline, a game that absolutely everyone will feel richer for playing.

videogamer 10/10

Both 'the best of' and the best offering in the entire series, GTA 5 easily lives up to the hype. The ultimate swansong for this console cycle, but also a game that'll cast a long shadow over the next one too.

Giantbomb 5/5

Overall, this game is less surprising than you might like, because so much of it is precisely what you'd expect from a GTA game. As other open-world games push forward in ways that make things like traversal more convenient, GTA forces you to look at the minimap for your turn-by-turn directions. At times, it feels like it was made in a vacuum, away from the influence of other games. But while you could certainly pick out a handful of individual systems or design choices that feel like they've been handled more intelligently elsewhere, none of those other games bring together so many interesting and disparate systems with the same level of aplomb on display here. That, combined with the game's unique multi-character approach to storytelling, makes Grand Theft Auto V an exciting successor in the long-running franchise.

rev3 5/5

The Guardian 5/5

Yes, some people will hate GTA V. Some, like me, will thoroughly enjoy it while acknowledging its complications, its shortcomings as a narrative adventure. Last of Us says more about humanity in five minutes than GTA V does in its 70-plus missions. Five stars for such a troubled proposition? That'll confuse and anger a few people, I know it. But no one constructs worlds like Rockstar and this one is worth many, many hours of exploration. It is fun, so much guilty, ridiculous fun.

Gametrailers - 9.8

Games radar - 5/5

Time - 5/5

Gameinformer 9.75/10

Grand Theft Auto V has the lofty expectations of living up to the pedigree of its critically acclaimed predecessors. Rockstar Games deserves credit for pushing the boundaries of its flagship franchise yet again with improved controls, great mission variety, and the most jam-packed open world I've ever visited. The narrative fails to match the impact John Marston or Niko Bellic's tales, but the colorful characters kept me interested in the story nonetheless. Like the golden state it parodies, Grand Theft Auto V is filled with beautiful scenery, a wealth of activities, and the promise of fortune.

Digitalspy 5/5

Only time will tell whether it's enough to win over the GTA naysayers, but Rockstar North has clearly listened to criticisms of past games and delivered what's as close to the perfect sandbox as technologically possible.
The hallmarks of the GTA series are all present, from the way the story is structured, to the explosive set pieces, use of stereotypes and humorous observations.
And while we would be hesitant to say that this is a more mature Grand Theft Auto, it's certainly a new high for a series that has grown in confidence with each new instalment.
With a great cast, a huge list of missions and activities, some novel new gameplay additions and one of the most stunning environments we've ever explored, Grand Theft Auto 5 is a masterpiece and a hugely impressive technological achievement.

Polygon 9.5/10

GTA 5 is a bridge between games' present and the future
Rockstar has expanded and improved upon so much of what's special about video games as mainstream spectacles, from the playful use of characters to the refined take on world design. The developer's progress makes the aspects of the game left in cultural stasis the poorly drawn women, the empty cynicism, the unnecessarily excessive cruelty especially agitating.

It's fitting that the game arrives at the cusp of the next generation of consoles. Grand Theft Auto 5 is the closure of this generation, and the benchmark for the next. Here is a game caught occasionally for the worst, but overwhelmingly for the better, between the present and the future.

Joystiq 4.5/5

Grand Theft Auto 5 is an ambitious game, attempting to meld three very different characters together to tell one encompassing story of survival in what amounts to the worst place in America. That story stumbles, but the open-ended gameplay remains a showpiece for the vast amount of content that can be poured into a virtual world.

Destructoid 9/10

Grand Theft Auto V is both a reflective and deflective game, diving into the heart of the GTA series with more than a few subtle things to say about itself. Michael is tired, and old, and wants to change, but he can't, and eventually he grows to accept and even enjoy that. Franklin is smarter than his surroundings, dreaming big but held back by old fashioned ideas. Trevor is hilarious, surprising, and a disgusting degenerate. All three characters, in their respective ways, feel representative of the Grand Theft Auto series as a whole, and contribute to making GTA V what it is -- the ultimate culmination of Rockstar's beloved and despised series. Personally, I think that's a fine thing to be.

Gamekult 9/10

Eurogamer 9/10

GTA5 may not be the Hollywood-beating crime story it wants to be, then, but it's the best video game it's ever been, and I'll take that.

Gamespot 9/10

GTA V is an imperfect yet astounding game that has great characters and an innovative and exciting narrative structure, even if the story it uses that structure to tell is hobbled at times by inconsistent character behavior, muddled political messages and rampant misogyny. It also raises the bar for open-world mission design in a big way and has one of the most beautiful, lively, diverse and stimulating worlds ever seen in a game. Your time in Los Santos may leave you with a few psychological scars, but you shouldnt let that stop you from visiting.

Escapist 3.5/5

If only the morally reprehensible script written by Dan Houser lived up to the achievements in game-making that Grand Theft Auto V otherwise embodies, it would be not just the game of the year but of the decade. Unfortunately, you can only hear a character say "&^%@ you, Mother&*^%er" so many times before it starts to grate on you. You can only embody a vicious psychopath a short time before it becomes boring, at best, and soul-crushing, at worst. Forcing players to murder people, not in a gamey "I killed you to complete a goal" way that defines this medium, but in a terrorizing and demeaning way, is not what will make videogames great. Rockstar had a chance to elevate, and they wasted it on portraying characters you don't want to spend five minutes with, let alone the hours it would take to play through the game's story.

I'm hoping the Kavinsky radiostation rumor is true.  It would be awesome.  I know I post that in nearly every GTA thread.  I don't care.

Anyway, does anyone know if V has some sort of military like San Andreas?

I'm actually going to hold off on buying a PS4, partly due to GTA. It's never really a great idea to buy a console at launch imo.

I don't know why I hadn't noticed before, but in the GTA gameplay video where they show just a split second of GTA Online, the 'online' character has about $52,000 to his name. I'm wondering how in depth the online will be, if there are things we can spend that money on. It would be pretty sweet to feel like a fourth character in that world.

Well, details on the multiplayer are coming in shortly, on the 17th, so it won't be long until they spill at least some of the information concerning the multiplayer. I just wish they would actually make this for the Playstation 4 and XBox One and not just keep it currently current-gen.

I agree, should all go well, it's going to be VERY DIFFICULT for Rockstar's fellow peers to exceed or surpass what they accomplished with GTAV. Imagine what they can do with GTA VI and that probably won't happen for YEARS now...jesus...

For all the shit Rockstar received for scaling down GTAIV in terms of content, the game still has more minutia and miniscule detail within that virtual world than just about any two games combined.

Also, the fact that they tapped other internal studios to fine-tune and tweak specific aspects of the mechanics is off the charts. This game is looking like a jack-of-all-trades that may pull off each one of those components as well, if not better, than other dedicated entries in those particular genres.

They seem to work now too.

For MP, I want something that I'll actually play. GTA is one of my favorite series, and for whatever reason, GTAIV online just didn't work for me. As soon as I switched to online, this vibrant huge world all just felt empty except for the people I was playing with. In addition to that, the floating weapon and item pickups sorta ruined the immersion. I want it to feel like a populated and believable world. My best friend and I were daydreaming about engaging in sniper battles in Liberty City before the game came out. We'd each text a picture of our character to eachother and then disappear into the crowd and try to see who could blend in the best while hunting the other one.

I mostly want to feel like I could run around in a sandbox with a friend causing chaos. How fun would it be to team up with friends and face down a six star assault from the authorities?

Now that is awesome. I totally agree, the lack of people in the game world ruined GTAIV online for me. It was too big for too few people. The coop missions were too basic and the combat wasnt great enough to really make it compelling. What you described sounds perfect.

Wow. You both spoke my mind. Literally! I tried playing the multiplayer for GTA IV a couple of times with friends, but it wasn't as atmospheric or lively as the single-player campaign was. So I'm hoping that things are approaching with a live attitude. And what Rag and his best friend talked about there? Nothing short of awesome...that's the kind of stuff I'd like to see happen in the GTA V multiplayer reveal.

Just saw the Online trailer. This is nuts. Impossible. There is no way they will be able to pull all of this off. No f*cking way.

I have gotten to the point where I refuse to believe anything Rockstar says about this game. It all sounds too mindblowing and too good to be true.

- Full online story mode with new missions and characters.
- Ability to play every mission with your friends
- Car races, Plane races, Off road bike races, Jet Ski races
- Fully customizable online characters down to your hair style and vehicle collection
- Fully customizable online mission generator - design your own races and maps
- Incredible looking visuals. Especially vehicles and characters
- Everything Rag talked about from going on killing sprees and then working with your friends to tackle the army using cars, helicopters and fighter jets of your own.

WTF.

official info

Grand Theft Auto Online is a dynamic and persistent online world for 16 players that begins by sharing gameplay features, geography and mechanics with Grand Theft Auto V, but will continue to expand and evolve after its launch with new content created by Rockstar Games and the Grand Theft Auto community. Grand Theft Auto Online takes the fundamental Grand Theft Auto concepts of freedom, ambient activity and mission-based gameplay and makes them available to multiple players in an incredibly detailed and responsive online world.

In Grand Theft Auto Online, players have the freedom to explore alone or with friends, work cooperatively to complete missions, band together to participate in activities and ambient events, or compete in traditional game modes with the entire community, all with the personality and refined mechanics of Grand Theft Auto V.

Players can invest in their character through customizing their appearance, improving their stats, owning customized vehicles, purchasing personal property, and taking part in missions, jobs and activities to earn reputation and cash to open up new opportunities to rise through the criminal ranks. The world of Grand Theft Auto Online will constantly grow and change as new content is added, creating the first ever persistent and dynamic Grand Theft Auto game world.

Access to Grand Theft Auto Online is free with every retail copy of Grand Theft Auto V and launches on October 1st.

Leslie Benzies interview - CVG

Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies said GTA Online could have launched at the same time as the main game, but that the studio considers it to be "a different entity, a separate thing".

He explained: "It'll be GTA Online; it's not part of GTA 5. Obviously it's set in the GTA 5 engine, but it's going to grow and evolve into its own thing." Access to GTA Online will come for free with every retail copy of GTA 5.

This is amazing!

Gamespot Preview:

http://uk.gamespot.com/features/why-...-work-6412714/

Even those familiar investments, like purchasing an apartment, have been reworked and expanded for GTA Online. Say you're hanging out in your high-rise apartment enjoying the view down below. You spot a flurry of red and blue lights in the distance and decide to see what's going on. So you switch on your TV, tune into the news, and suddenly you're watching your friend fleeing from the police in real-time thanks to the news helicopter flying directly above him. Beyond little touches like this, you can use your apartment for more practical uses, as well--like getting your friends together to go over the details of a heist in your planning room or keeping a watchful eye on your 10-car garage using a closed-circuit security camera feed. Hell, you can even take a shower to wash off the blood after a particularly brutal mission. It's borderline ridiculous just how much Rockstar has done with these player-owned properties.

HOW!!!!!!

That video is so good. It looks like it will come pretty close to what I was wanting it to be, if not better. I'm pretty sure this is the only game I need until Dark Souls II comes out. I love Rockstar and GTA because they always over-deliver. It is amazing what you can do with unlimited resources and five years of development time.

I'm really curious to see how the user-created maps and races will work over Xbox Live and Playstation Online. That opens up a whole new set of opportunites.

Im still trying to grasp all this!!! Read the GS and CVG previews!

The stock market thing is ridculous, you can buy stock for a car maker then go around blowing up that line of cars so that the manufacturer has to make more and the stock goes up.

Watch your friends car chases on Live TV?!?!?!?!?!?

16 players seems low though but with too many it can get crazy. I wonder how they will handle all the airstrikes and people you can call in. It would suck if every battle ends with air strikes. It seems like they really are trying to balance it, giving people bad points if they dont play nice. But what about the stealing money, they make that a part of the experience but penalize you for it? They say you should take money to the bank cause if you are killed you lose your wallet. So I am going to hang around banks and wait for dudes with money to deposit and jump them. LOL

The whole system sounds so perfect, easy to jump right to what friends are doing. Easy to start your own mission. With the press of a button you and a friend can play tennis or start a full mission.

How is this possible!?!?!?!?

So what do you guys think about the Oct 1st date. I dont mind since it lets us finish the single player, still this is something I wish I could mess with every night. I think eventually this will be sold separately and be on PS4/One.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/424264/gta-online-first-look-rockstars-persistent-online-world-is-its-most-ambitious-project-in-years/

Suddenly, a Rockstar developer sat next to us starts chatting into his headset and his on-screen character does the same, lip-synching broadly in time.

At any time during GTA Online, you can pick up your phone to 'ring' friends in single player and invite them into your world.

A Vapid Dominator pulls up (we can see it winding through the streets on a screen to our left), and he jumps in. "What's this?" one character asks, as Waylon Jennings plays on the radio. The passenger can change channels, acting as in-car DJ.

Whoever does the job gets the cash and can choose how much to share: a sure-fire source of arguments. "I'll give you a little more, it's OK", he says.

They head to a character's apartment, with a high-end ground floor garage with space for 10 customised cars. Like single player, car modding is extensive, but don't fear losing your cherished vehicles. You can take out insurance and ring for a replacement car if yours get destroyed. Your custom cars show as markers on the map and get impounded if you leave them too long. Simply pay to retrieve them.

...

The four-person team head to the factory, scoping out sentries from afar. The scope for teamwork and co-ordination is impressive. "All clear. Let me know when you're in place", whispers one player. "I've got a guard here", says another, "I'm going in close and personal". He creeps us behind the guard, sinking a knife into his neck - presumably a new close-combat move. We also see some new clambering animations, plus a 'shin slide' down a ladder. GTA Online detects how noisy you are, so you could shout or open fire to distract a guard while a friend sneaks by.

...

n truth, the visuals look a bit less polished than the trailers have led us to believe. Not hugely, but it's noticeable when viewing a guard from distance - they're not as hi-res. To be clear: GTA V and GTA Online look fantastic for PS3 / 360 titles but this is the reality of seeing a game in action, not its manicured trailers.

...

Before the demo's final mission, one player leaves to drop money off at the Maze Bank ATM. If you get killed holding all your cash, a portion will spill onto the streets. It's important to keep cash for your daily activities, and deposit the rest in the bank. Or wager it on races. Or invest in the stock market... as we said, it's complex. You can even attack listed companies and damage their share price. At one extreme, you might need a bodyguard to make drops at the bank.

...

Within minutes, all four players are in the chopper. "We're going to the airfield and gain some altitude", says the pilot, "Then you guys can jump out". As the chopper hovers over the airfield, the players pick out targets and set a waypoint - yes, you can set them from the air. "Get ready guys. 3... 2... 1... Jump!" shouts the pilot, as the other three parachute into the airport. It's thrilling stuff, with a real feel of team co-ordination.

Leslie Benzies: With a lot of these things, we don't see the problems until we actually sit in a big session and play. We've got a thing called Passive mode. If you're spawning and being killed immediately, go to Passive mode - it means you can't shoot people, but they can't shoot you. So you can just kind of hang around and get to grips with the game

Seems like they are putting a lot into making sure your online experience doesnt get screwed by stupid players.
