So i've been on a kind of streak of buying PlatinumGames titles, as they are now released on PC and coming down in price.

As a general rule, when trailers for those game first came out, i never really found the themes very attractive, and kind of avoided them, thinking my time was better invested elsewhere.

But then last year, i picked up and finished Nier Automata. I also picked up Bayonetta and Vanquish recently.

I started Bayonetta yesterday and am already almost done with my first playtrough. I find they are incredibly well crafted games, and cannot wait to try Vanquish, and maybe give Revengeance a second chance.

I'd like to hear from the people that have been buying and enjoying their games. How do you feel about the evolution, from say a game like Bayonetta, to something like Nier Automata, or whatever else may be in the works?

Thanks!

I have a tough time enjoying Japanese games for whatever reason (and I like pretty much everything else that is Japanese). Maybe it's the general character design, the overall presentation, the music, but I just don't really like many Japanese games from recent years. If Dragon Quest and Dark Souls and Persona are the best they can offer, well....not for me.

But Platinum Games comes close! Vanquish and Nier: Automata are decent.

Given that Platinum Games was born from Capcom and that Capcom has been a huge favourite of mine since the NES days I have a great appreciation of their games. Their games tend to have excellent and exciting combat mechanics that give their games a real kinetic energy.

Platinum has fast become one of my favourite developers... and it all started with Bayonetta. It was an Xbox Games with Gold game one month, so I decided to play it. And I instantly loved it. The combat and style instantly clicked with me.

Since then, I've played pretty much every Platinum game (except for a couple). I think Nier Automata is my favourite Platinum game, followed by Astral Chain.

Can't wait for Bayonetta 3!

Personally Platinum can be hit or miss. Gameplaywise they are amazing but the games itself can be a miss if it doesn't have all the right ingredients.

Nier Automata is a hit thanks to superb writing team from Square Enix (idk why people always forgot or ignore about this important point) while Astral Chain story is just boring and predictable as fk. Terrible pacing too, luckily saved by a good combat mechanic albeit a bit into the button mashing area.

Platinum Games have a level of polish, tight controls, amazing combat systems, and flashy animation few can compare with.

However they also like to experiment and usually that can be the developers downfall. Because they seem to enjoy flinging ideas at the wall whether it's good or not. A lot of systems and design choices that break pacing or weaken its strengths.

Platinum also have an unhealthy obsession with quick time events. One of the core reasons I never felt Bayonetta was as strong as the Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden masterpiece games. Still love the Bayonetta games; they're just not quite as good as the slashers I mentioned in my opinion.

Vanquish however is easily one of my favoirte games of all time. And I use it often in debates as the third person shooter standard.

I love Platinum. Even the kinda janky PS3 port of Bayonetta was so good, I couldn't get into God of War 3 after that. While I haven't played all of their games, generally everything they've made is good as long as it wan't published by Activision. Combat is their strength. Their games come off visceral and chaotic, but once you wrap your head around the mechanics, you'll find yourself slowing down and getting into a sort of zen like state as you play. No one else makes action games quite like them.

Yeah, Platinum's games are kinda like porn. The story is there to sort of connect the set-pieces, but it's not the reason you're watching/playing.

What I have played from P+ has been enjoyable although W101 would be on the bottom of the list. I do look forward to trying Bayonetta and Vanquish on the X1.
