its sad when on a rare occasion a girl appears on a game and all the guys either get crazy to chat with her or downright evil and attack her as if she was the only enemy on the screen. I was at a friends playing Halo 2. (I have PS3) Trying to figure what the hype is. Its a very fun game. However while we were playing this girl comes online and starts playing she speaks and its as if she set off a nuclear bomb. First, the guys couldn't believe a girl had come online. Suddenly they were saying all of these misogynistic comments. "What's up B****" or "Hooray the entertainment is here" Then they were all attacking her as if she had no right to be there. It was weird. I have yet to encounter a girl on PS3 games like Resistance or Splinter Cell. I hope that they don't get treated like this.

What I want to know is if this type of behavior is common on either system. PSN and Xbox Live. It would explain why I don't see many girls online. If they are treated like this. I could see why they might not come on or make their identity secret. So does anyone else have any other examples of this type of behavior or was it a fluke?

Well, the last time I played with a female on Xbox Live was Rainbow Six Vegas. She kicked my team's asses. We didn't harass her or anything.

Even when they play in CS I don't see females being harassed. Then again I avoid servers that would likely cause problems. I personally target whoever is shooting at me. Y chromosome or not.

It's been about 50/50 for me, sometimes you get some guys who act like jerks and sometimes I've had some really good games where there was a female gameror *gasp* even two present and no one harassed them. I don't think it's something specific to either network as I have noticed it happen on both Xbox Live and some online PS2 games.

I've only seen girl gamers on Mortal Kombat, Halo, and I think it was Tetris. I don't really care, but I may give a remark of "your a girl....*akward silence*" "don't see too many girls playing....*bigger akward silence*" "*starts to ramble about nothing*"

Thats the first time i heard that happen, its sad that they have a problem with girls playing games. Maybe they're mad because they cant get a girlfriend, maybe also they dont want to lose to a girl, but still there isnt any excuse to do that.

In counter strike source things do get pretty nasty if you hang out at the wrong servers.

Its not a real suprise, girls can be just as good as guys  its kinda sad, but I think most guys have been beaten by girls they just don't know it or refuse to believe it. I've been beaten twice and became good friends with one.

Anonymity brings out the worst in people sometimes. A lot of those guys would never have the audacity to talk to anyone like that in real life... Girls can voice mask if they don't want others to figure out who they are if it gets too bad.

Sadly, if you're spotted as a non-white American male on X Box Live, you're most likely gonna have some problems /w at least someone in a game.

Well not everyone looks down on female gamers

When I used to play FFXI, people got along very well and many female gamers were welcomed.

I'm grateful for the exception of MMORPGs when it comes to sexism. It's usually a lot easier as the balance of players is a lot more even then in a shooter. That being said, I wish I could play online with my girlfriend in Team Fortress as comfortably as we play together in Guild Wars.

Also, racism is another problem that is probably even more prevalent due to diversity being a little more widespread. I've had to leave games because of the disgusting things said by certain players. Now, I only play on servers with active mods and strict policies with regard to sexist and racist outspurts.

That's because they are like unicorns. They are very rare and have become the stuff of legend. I know a guy at the cyber-cafe I go to who said he played with a girl once...

No really though, anybody different gets harassed online. If you have the lowest score, the highest score, have a funny voice, are from somewhere outside the U.S., have a speech impediment, or a mental handicap. It's not just girls, it's almost EVERYBODY!

I think online games should go back to text format of communication.

I had no problem with typing while I play counter-strike, or starcraft. I don't like listening to others while I play games and I feel uncomfortable at it too.

Also when people are typing, they are more careful with what they say. Also these kind of problems didn't really occur until people started using voice chat.

Thats the problem with the anonymity of the internet. You can pretty much say what you want and nothing usually comes of it. I'm sure there are probably more girl gamers out there, but as sad as it is, it is a smart move not to talk and let them know. Most people on Xbox Live especially are comeplete booshdags. Oh yeah, and you WERE playing Halo2.

Consoles are still new to the on-line world .. so of course you will get this type of behavior from all those sexually frustrated teenage boys. It will take a long time for consoles to reach the same level of maturity and acceptance as the on-line PC community enjoys.

Woman gamers have been making their mark ever since gaming went "on-line". I remember back when Quake II reined supreme, there were alot of amazing female gamers who mopped the floor with some of the best guys. :)

I don't think that harrassment is gender specific. There are people that are too free with how they act online because they don't have to deal with the consequences of their actions. I, personally, don't even play online with people I don't know for that very reason.

I don't think its a case of console gamers being less mature. I've seen plenty instances of women being harrassed in PC games. I think it comes down to Voice vs Text chat. Its harder to identify women in PC games unless they reveal it, and even then you can't be 100% sure. On XBL where every game has voice chat, its easier to be certain.

Thats because most guys only play games with other guys. Their social ability to not be awkward towards women in normal circumstances is hard enough for them, but when they are participating in an event that they enjoy with a woman then it throws them off axis into a vortex of "I have to look cool for a girl, but dont want to seem like a nerd." This causes a paradox which then causes negative energy.

This paradox and negative energy cannot coexist in the same place at the same time. Reactions take place due to these things. Such as profuse sweating. Saying incoherant and nonsensical things. Worst of all uncontrollable flatulance. These things combined with others forms of negative energy and the paradox has other side effects like sausage fingers and anal leakage.

This is the reason why.

I can't comment on console gaming as I'm a Pc gamer, but one of the best playersI have as a regular team mate is female, and she's better than me and most of the other players too.

I also know some other female players who kick ass in other games, one I know is a really good and fanatical WoW player, she's on both US and European servers and she's also a Moderator on a RTS server as well, with a hard ass reputation there.

There are a lot more women players out there than most players know about, but it seems to be mainly kids who can't handle meeting them, must be a boy thing, they haven't learned how tosocialise withgirls yet and they get scared and over react.

It's very rare to meet girl gamers in "guy games", such as Halo and Counterstrike. Well, the way they act shows the kind of ppl that frequent these games, I suppose. MMORPG players are totally different in that respect.

Edit: Oh, and I'm sure that most girl gamers out there can beat me senseless in Halo or CS.

Must be a Xbox live or FPS thing because I have been playing MMO's foralmost a decade now and the girls I have met are usually treated really well with higher level bloke protecting them and helping them out, I have even known a few sad lads that pretended to be the opposite sex only to be caught out .

Most male players, 15+, hate to play with girls and/or little kids. I don't find either particularly bad, I believe everyone has the right to play a video game in peace, no matter what their gender, age or gaming skill is. Most girls I've seen are better than me, though there are a few who are pretty bad. That said, I've only encountered maybe 5-8 girls on Xbox Live in the year I've had it. To not see very many, I feel a sence of sorrow to know that just because they're not putting on makeup and talking about celebrities, people as old as myself feel they have the right to make their contempt known in order to drive them away from a hobbie that everyone is entitled to indulge in.

Teenage males. If only we could just kill all the teenage males.

I'm kidding about the killing part, but there's the source of the problem, when there is one. (I've played plenty of games, including shooters, with girls on the server where they were treated just like any other gamer).

It looked like she was little annoyed, but at the same time she seemed slightly amused, so I guess it wasn't too bad for her.

but wow, haven't seen such immature responses. Some girls might not find that amusing.

Halo 2 has one of the worst online communities. Whenever I'm playing it and a girl is in the room the same thing happens. Either everyone wants to be her friend and is really nice to her or they just cuss her out. I haven't encountered anything similar in other games.

This is the point I'm at. But its always been this way on the net... except now it's far easier for anyone to be online and cause troubles. Starting-With Xbox live and to a lesser extent PS2 We have opened up a new area of accessibility to online gaming with voice. Most people never would have had the same chance to get online, open his or her mouth, act a fool, and now with these cams for 360 and PS3 I'm surprised we have not heard more horror stories.

Sorry if I took this off topic, But anyway Girl gamers are great, I never have had any problems with any I have ever played with. Of course I'm not a teen hormone anymore either:cry: I believe in most cases if a girl gets troubled in a game by anyone, she can just leave the game like any other gamer that gets harassed. I have been team killed, called names, cheated. Thats online gaming. But if you keep a friends list you can avoid this.

Me and my girlfriend play resistance on ps3 all the time. Whenever she talks on the mic. everyone is usually nice to her and amazed that a girl is playing. she usually does pretty good and places top 10. We play as either Ronnie_Deutch or YourWorstNME
