Castlevania gets my vote. I find the gameplay, enemies, stages, and music to generally be more interesting.

@Archangel3371: I'm with you on that, initially I was thinking GnG, but upon reflection, Castlevania seems better. Both are fantastic games though.

"Better"?

CastleVania all day, every day. However I will point out I'm horribly bias.

"Harder"?

Ghosts n' Goblins is much harder. Only CastleVania III is even comparable in difficulty, and even then is still a smoother experience.

Gn'G made every other Fam/Nes game look like happy hour honestly.

@tiggytog: The PSP game had drastically different name in some regions but yes I've played that game, visually it was one of the better games in the series with some nice animation. And while I prefer CastleVania would welcome Gn'G to make a return in the same way Strider did.

Someone has mentioned that previously, and from what I looked up most compare its difficulty to CastleVania III. Which in my opinion is not more challenging than Ghost n' Goblins, particularly the Fam/Nes version of the game.

Super, portable and the arcade versions of Gn'G are considered more fairly balanced. Doesn't make any of these games exactly easy, some of the toughest games of that retro generation. Gn'G on Fam was just an intense and poorly balanced game, even for its generation.

@RSM-HQ: Holy Diver is usually compared more to Ghosts n Goblins and Battletoads from what I've seen. It's similar in style to the Castlevania games but it's definitely much tougher.

As mentioned, looking into the game suggests it is hard but not downright depressing in difficulty like the Fam version of Gn'G. Haven't played Holy Diver myself so cannot use it as definite context. However the sources I have read indicates being able to move mid-air, much faster projectiles, and the ability to aim up, max health upgrades and high jump; which balances the game.

Ghosts n' Goblins doesn't have any of those luxuries. Arthur sucks and forever will suck, good luck. . .

Can say CastleVania III is tougher than Battletoads though. Personally I think Battletoads is a tad exaggerated. Has two tough areas (Volkmire's Inferno and Revolution) Spelunker is more difficult honestly (Another overlooked 8-bit classic)

CVIII is also no average CV game. Has bats and axe men that break the skill factor and demand luck hoping spawning and the code slinging projectiles comes to a halt. I don't exactly look back at the later levels of CVIII with much praise, the spike is too aggressive in my opinion, while games like Rondo hit the balance just right. CVIII was a big upgrade from the original game and has many improvements, but for an overall experience I do not exactly have much love for the game.

@RSM-HQ: I cant agree at all. Castlevania 3 was easily the best Castlevania imo, Rondo of blood was too easy tbh and the level design was generally too straightforward. Battletoads I have a much harder time with than Castlevania 3, especially with limited continues.

Rondo of Blood is only easy if and when people use the other playable character (Maria), which changes the ending anyway. The game is designed really well in my opinion and has one of the most challenging but fair last levels and Death encounters in the franchise.

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree on Battletoads, to me CastleVania III is much harder and I play a lot of CastleVania games.

I'd go with Ghosts n Goblins. I just have more fun memories of dying a lot with friends/family and passing the controller around

@RSM-HQ: Holy diver is a nightmare, I endured the misery of it one time and will never play it again. I absolutely hated every second I played it but stuck with it just out of pure stubborness, it is definitely harder than cv 3 and gng, not sure about battletoads.

I completely disagree that CV 3 is harder than battletoads. Having played and beaten both of them earlier this week they are both very fresh in my mind and battletoads is a considerably harder game. I am of the opinion that CV 3 has an exxagerated difficulty, most people say its really hard but whenever I play through it I just don't see it. Don't get me wrong its not an easy game by any stretch, but it is not as hard as most people say it is and nowhere near as hard as battletoads. The thing about battletoads is you have limited continues, most of the levels require lots of memorization, and even when you do memorize them actually completing them is still extremely challenging. CV 3 is hard, but you can keep trying and there is nothing cheap and does not require you to memorize anything. Also since it is more linear your skills progress as you go, as opposed to battletoads where every level is different, beating the level prior typically does nothing to help you beat the next one.

For example, beating the turbo tunnel does not help you become a better player to beat surf city. The same could not be said for CV, also you can cheese certain parts of CV with grant and alucard depending on what path you take.

Ultimately challenge is an subjective thing, but I think most people definitely find battletoads the harder game.

There is only really one G&G game I would salvage, and that's the Genesis version. Castlevania has many more games that are very good.
