Hi all,

want to open a debate on single playergames with multiple story arcs and multiple endings. I am not sure i actually find them satisfying as a gaming experience and wondered what the gamespot community thought about this in general. The game that brought this most to my attention was Fallout New Vegas. Admittedly this is an extreme example, but it highlights a trend - and i wondereddo we actually enjoy a game that can have about 40 different plot pathways andpossible endings? For me, endless plot pathways can detract from the immersion and enjoyment of a story - not enhance it.

It's fine unless you are ADD and need to try every ending.

I played thru NV exactly one time.

Maybe in the future I'll do another playthru, but not for the ending.

When the multiple endings start to affect the content of the game, then they become too many.

Any more than 3 and it will just become a chore. Apparently Heavy Rain has about 10 endings

I'd say it depends on the game and on the endings if they're good or not. I usually enjoy multiple endings myself and I don't think I could put any kind of cap on how many would be too many.

I say the more the merrier. Look at Chrono trigger. Great game. Although some of the endings really should not be considered endings. For the most part, though, it worked and added to the replay value alot.

I don't think I've ever encountered "too many endings" before. You only choose one anyways.

I think 3 would probably be plenty. Most developers have a hard enough time delivering ONE good ending - unless a developer is incredibly talented when it comes to writing stories, anything more than 3 different endings would probably be a waste of time.

I only have an issue with it if it is from arbitrary choices such as dont kill certain enemies or dont let a escort charachter get hurt or ammo used or left (silent hill I am looking at you). However when the story allows you to make decisions I think it is natural for different endings depending on choice.

Which is what I accomplished long after I completed the game on my playthrough and you know what? It was worth it. The game is a blast...best role-playing game ever, IMO!

I never like multiple ending. If the game is good then there will be one set after and they will just pick one ending.

Also if the different ending is base on what you pick then it is a sell out since most multiple ending only happen after the game play is over and does not affect the game play.

As long as getting the good ending doesn't require a strategy guide (Metro 2033, Prince of Persia: WW, Silent Hill Homecoming, Oddworld) I don't mind multiple endings, no matter the number of them. Games like Chrono Trigger, Deus Ex and Heavy Rain proved this sort of thing can be done right

It's not all about the ending. I could slam down all sorts of sayings here like "it's better to travel then arrive" but I'm sure you get it. A proper ending is nice, but it's not the whole reason you play a game, otherwise we will all be gathered around U-Tube watching game endings instead of playing the actual games.

agreed. the act of choosing is important and is often a gameplay system in and of itself. a good ending will obviously add to those choices, but its important that they are there.

i loved how new vegas did it, 4 main endings and some supplemental stuff based on side quests.

Mass effect 2also did a simpler but great ending

I'd like to see 2-4 different endings for my rpg's

On the other hand, a great story can be overshadowed by a lame ending. She's right when she says traveling is better than arriving, but it really depends on where you arrive at. A pleasant trip is ruined if your destination is a smelly dump

I like multiple endings that change based on what you did throughout the game (not just the last 10 minutes) At the same time I realised I rarely play through again to get the different endings. Most of the time I'll have a look at the endings on youtube or just read what others say. In some cases games that carry over saves I prefer to stick with one ending because that is my story for the game and doing other endings would dilute my experience and would merge together and be harder to understand.

the more you build up a story, the more it requires a good ending. fallout 3 didnt have a great ending, but i still think it is a great game. the main story tracking down your father and all that is there, but there are so many different things to do that have equal (if not more) weight. the ability to truly make my way in the world outweighs a tidy ending. EDIT: also, why do people call saluki "she"? ive always got the impression that evil_saluki is a horny dude. :P

I'm positive evil_saluki is a she Anyway, I think Fallout 3 barely has a story at all, which is a pity considering how awesome the game is and how much more could have been done with the Enclave and Brotherhood of Steel. The lame ending was just the icing on the cake. This is the same reason why I can't get into New Vegas: I just don't see any compelling reason to keep playing, since there's hardly anything going on in the first few hours

i havent played new vegas (different developer), but fallout 3 is strong in world creation. there are tons of different threads going on like the pc's daddy issues, moira brown's book, ghoul vendettas, murder mysteries and much more. the game is intuitively the sum of your ramblings in the wastes. the more i play it, the more i come to the conclusion that it wouldnt have been half as good if all i wanted to do was help those poor wastelanders.

I'm all for multiple endings...if it's done right. When it's not done right it ends up like Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. Don't get me wrong, I love this series. But there are a ton of endings depending on which characters you form strong relationships with...only problem is you can only have a couple character endings per play through and there are a good bit of characters. I really don't feel like replaying that game over again considering how long it was.

When each playthrough takes more than 40 hours, and there are another 5 or 6 endings to go. I'm a completionist and an achievements whore, thus I will not rest until I have experienced/unlocked every possible ending there is.

If each playthough is short and sweet (10-15 hours each - generally for action games), then I don't mind having 7 or 8 endings. In fighting games, something like BlazBlue: CT would be good: 3-4 endings for each character, with each ending taking about20-30 minutes to unlock. But any longer (like in RPGs and lifestyle simulators), and I would have to say 3 or 4 endings are more than enough to fulfil the basics (True End, Good End, Neutral/Bad End, Worst End).

Also, this might be a little off-topic, but it is of my opinion that if any game were to have multiple endings, it had better have a Theater/Album Mode (like the one in 'Record of Agarest War') so I can re-watch them without having to play the game.

I agree. It can be an awesome story that just keeps getting better and better, only to have an ending that literally kills it. I've only seen that happen in a few games though.

Fallout didn't get famous from their main story. They've always been lame get water chip, get a terraforming kit, purify the water, find out why someone tried to kill you plots. However these plots are used to thrust your character into a world where anything can happen. Fallout 3 had the worst endings of all with the majority of the outcome resting on a decision you made 10 minutes prior to the credits rolling. The other games balance it out and go on to show what kind of effect your character had on certain towns, tribes, groups of people.

To answer the question; There's no limit to how many endings a game should have as long as everything is well written. I've seen linear games with horrible endings just like i've seen a nonlinear games with horrible endings. It has nothing to do with how the game works but the writing throughout the game.

Apparently Heavy Rain has about 10 endings

kingkarl123

yeah, and apparently I got the most depressing one where I got everybody killed, just because I didn't hit the right buttons in time. And since it saves every action you take, you can't retry for a different ending unless you replay the entire game. no thanks, I have better things to do with my time.

It becomes too many endings, when they become mediocre endings. I would rather have 1 great ending than 5 okay endings.

I immediately thought of New Vegas when I saw this thread. There were a lot of endings, but I disagree that it is TOO many. I kind of like the idea of there being so many variables in the story's conclusion. Although, I wish that the endings actually meant something. I didn't like it in Fallout 3 either when you were permanently shut out of the game after the metaphorical curtain closed. It would be nice if you didn't have to drop ten dollars on a DLC just to continue where you left off. I loved the "suicide mission" in ME2 though, it was a bit of a challenge to actually keep your entire team alive. I think it's important for games to have SOME kind of options when it comes to endings. Portal 2 for example was amazing, but it's only downside was that it's quite linear. The single-player campaign will always end the same way and that's kind of a bummer.

More is better, in my opinion. I like having branching story lines. I'm very goal oriented in my gaming, and an alternate ending is a great way for me to continue playing a game. Without a goal to work towards, I get the feeling that there's nothing worth doing still - not withstanding mini-games or online multiplayer that have their own inclusive goals.

I am 100% oppposed to multiple endings. I absolutely despise them. I believe any more than one ending is too many. They do nothing to help make the story memorable. I feel that a story should have an ending, just as it had a beginning. There is no point to a story if there is no definite conclusion.

It really depends on 3 things for me: 1. How good the game is, 2. How long it is, and the biggest factor for me, 3. How relevent it is to the events. In regards to 3, if your different ending means playing the exact same game but getting a different final cutscene, then I'll pass. Also, if your game was barely good enough for a single playthrough, you're out the door as well.

I'm guessing no one likes Dead Rising, which I find the Multiple Endings great, even though I already beat the game and Overtime mode.

Anymore than 3 is just blah in my opinion. I think that's the magic number.

Yeah,

interesting opinions, i guess a lot of it depends on what floats your boat - gameplay wise.

Portal 2 is a recent example for me that is almost totally linear yet is a fantastically immersive game with a really enjoyable story. Older games like Vice City had great main story arcs, but digestible side stories that didnt pull the player away from the main story for too long. New Vegas for me was too much - and it didnt help that it probably massively added to all the bugs and glitches.
